2010 TSUN News offseason (football)

In another dramatic GBW reversal much like the admissions harrassment (a weeks worth of this culture fostered and unchecked, suddenly halted), now GBW is reporting that folks didn't have the whole story on why Jones was denied:

Scout Free

**** Conelius had a 2.53-2.55 GPA (not 3.7) and scored a 790 on the ACT. He needed an 810 to qualify. Plans to attend UM a semester late after improving his grades.

So after yet another massive witch hunt about evil UM, it turns out that they turned away three kids:

**** Kinnard, who was never going to qualify and everyone mildly connected to UM or NE Ohio knew that.

**** Dorsey, who was offered with frightening academics, raised his GPA & ACT 30+% in one semester, and did so at a questionable third party school... with three robbery incidents to boot.

**** Conelius, who didn't make the grade on his SAT.

Amazing what happens when you get all of the facts :roll2:

There's also a new development at UM which will be linked once it surfaces in one of the newspaper or major media outlets.

It punches a serious hole in the all-in-for-conspiracy faction of the UM fanbase, which is accounts for about 98% of the posts made on GBW this offseason (there aren't many BigJes posters out there). To be fair, there are plenty of UM fans fed up with the excuses and BS and their irritation-driven silence distorts that total above.

Props, don't think I could have said it better myself. So what was Tom's excuse this time? Did he start another thread full of made up words and lock it?

I have been a regular lurker on the Scout UM board for several years. Many of the regulars are not active and the quality of the board has declined overall due. Your point about irritation-driven silence is on target.

Rivals $

Toledo OL Jack Miller has chosen UM over 12 offers including BC, WVU, Pitt, MSU & ILL.

Scout $

Is FL QB/ATH Kevin Sousa close to choosing UM? His top 8 yesterday was FIU, ILL, MTSU, Vandy, Wake, WVU, UM & USF.

Given how the "all-in" UM fans dogged Carr for his recruiting in his final years (which included Boren, Mallett, McGuffie, Turner, Martin), I can't imagine how badly they'll speak of these RR classes once they realize how far they've fallen. Sure some will work out like Roundtree - Sousa has some nice upside (but needs years to develop) - but the Michigan I grew up with would stockpile 2-3 NFL qbs, 2-3 NFL backs, 3-5 NFL WRs, 3-4 NFL OL & 6-8 NFL defenders on their roster. So far Roundtree & Roh look like the only draftable players, and not elite ones yet.

Scratch that, most will just blame the anti-RR factions in the administration, admissions & high schools for never giving RR a chance to win. Considering many are blown away with his recruiting under the circumstances (no that's not sarcasm), just disregard the first sentence about reversing their stance.

Great coaches recruit their way out of weak depth charts. Decent coaches bring in better talent but are not consistent in deploying it. Bad coaches keep settling for the same caliber of kids that they recruited at their previous small coaching gig.

Maybe RR just isn't good enough to handle the challenge of top shelf coaching, the politics, the high expectations, the magnifying glass. Forget Pete Carroll or Bob Stoops, look no further than the Golden Dome for overcoming hatred & mediocrity. Most of South Bend hated Charlie after their first conversation with him, yet somehow he recruited well despite a lousy product on the field. I guess RR is no Charlie Weis.

Once again, how does scUM plan to defeat tOSU & JT when they continually take kids that barely even get a look from tOSU? Remember when scUM used to battle tOSU for Ohio's top recruits and not settle for table scraps? Enjoy these times folks...

Given how the "all-in" UM fans dogged Carr for his recruiting in his final years

Carr never went and poached recruits from the MAC and CUSA

or allowed Sparty and other various schools to bum rush the top instate talent (Minus Gardner and Campbell)

Rich Rod still recruits like hes at West Virginia, you arent going to get by in the big 10 by plucking defensive recruits from the MAC, countless slot WRs (also plucked from MAC/CUSA), "sleeper" HB recruits praying you land the next Steve Slaton, same with QB praying to find "THE NEXT PAT WHITE!!!!"

bringing in under the radar "sleeper" guys is ok, but at Michigan your recruiting class should not mostly consist of these guys

Rich Rod's whole coaching career in D1 is basically thanks to getting lucky with Pat White and Steve Slaton.... scUM fans are to stupid to understand this

hes not a very good recruiter and without White And Slaton a below average coach

Building on this, their current commits and ranking by position (scout):

*** #31 QB
*** #84 DE (probably end up on the OL according to most um folks)
*** #50 DE
**** #13 DE
*** #50 WR
*** #35 CB
*** #41 CB

...and they're not in on a lot of top notch prospects. That's not even a wvu recruiting class, that's mid-level Big-East. FL (****) RB Dee Hart seems to be the one semi blue-chipper giving them attention, but after talk of a spring-summer committment, he's now saying he wants to announce at an AS game. Can't think that ends well for um as time goes on with their main competition being Saban.

Funny how all these supposed academic obstacles are being mentioned by beaver and his cronies just as recruiting looks to really be quite underwhelming. But, hey, I guess at least he's not accusing money of changing hands...yet. Coming up a little short on those springtime class projections that included Braxton Miller, Trey DePriest, Tanner and many others that have already gone elsewhere, eh tommy? :roll1:

Tressel has a track record of developing under the radar guys........Rich Rod however does not, I laugh when scUM fans say "WE TRUST RR!!!111!!! ALL IN!!!!" in reference to their constant reaching for recruits

To be fair to rr, wait, nevermind...fuck him.

Eh, alright...he did develop two of the bigger "sleepers" in recent memory in Pat White and Steve Slaton. Then again, given his dubious history in aa, how much of that was due to a much weaker slate in the big east? Meaning, if he had those two at scUM, would the success have been as great? I have my doubts.

Its time for a detailed look at how UM recruiting is going. One position at a time and using info from Scout:

QB:
9 offers
5 have committed elsewhere (including their top 4)
Thier only hit is Sousa - their lowest rated offer and a kid some are already talking could be converted to a LB or TE (AT 6'4" Aand 235 he certainly isn't the RR prototype QB).

RB:
9 offers
2 have gone elsewhere
no hits

WR:
15 offers
4 going elsewhere
1 hit - #50 rated Conway

TE:
3 offers
2 going elsewhere
no hits

OT:
11 offers
top 4 going elsewhere
no hits

OG;
7 offers
2 misses
0 hits

C:
2 offers
1 miss
0 hits

DT:
13 offers
7 misses (3 to OSU)
0 hits

DE:
17 offers (really - 17)
4 misses
3 hits - including #13 Brennen Byer
This looks like THE success story of their recruiting season to date.

OLB:
10 offers
1 miss
0 hits

MLB:
7 offers
2 misses
0 hits

S:
7 offers
2 misses
0 hits

CB:
12 offers
1 miss
2 hits - the #35 and #41 at the position

K:
1 offer
1 miss

To be sure, it is early and most of the kids on their wish list are uncommitted. But nobody doubts they will fill their class. The question is "With what?" As pointed out above their track record on quality kids is pretty poor right now.

As for their rivals:

OSU has commits from 15 kids and 13 are rated in the top 30 at their positions.

ND has 12 with 7 in the top 30

Even MSU who has only 6 recruits has landed 2 who are top 30, including the #1 rated MLB in the nation from right in UMs own back yard.

(UM has 7 with 1 top 30 player.)

I love doing this.

15 - 13
1 - 7

...and I love pointing out how just about everything we said would happen (he would force feed them his system, he ignored defense, he couldn't really recruit as well as they said he would, he'd try to get by with borderline kids, he's an ignorant goofball scumbag, he poops his pants in big games, probation), is happening. It's kind of eerie, really.

Seriously, remember back when he was hired the state of the scUM boards? They said he was going to reel in blue chip recruits who would be falling at his feet to play in his system. Well, yeah, not so much.

for comparison sake ( at the same positions scUM has landed so far)

Ohio State (scout rankings)-

***** #1 QB

***** #4 DE

**** #11 DE

**** #20 WR

*** #40 WR

**** #20 CB

great to be a Buckeye........
