2010 tOSU Running Backs discussion

What we have right now is, among the guys who have played, a stable of pretty darn good to very good RBs, but not the dominant "he's the man" type we saw with Mo C and Beanie. I thing Berry might actually be that guy, but we have yet to see.

I LOVE the way Herron runs. Good vision, cuts very quickly and dramatically, and runs harder than anyone else on the team. But he hardly ever breaks a tackle, and hardly ever moves the pile.

I get very frustrated with the way Saine runs sometimes - never makes a cut at full speed and sometimes tentative approaching the LOS - but he breaks alot of tackles and always seems to move the pile. Plus he has breakaway speed. Another plus is his receiving ability.

Hope Berry is 100% healthy this season and has picked up the blocking assignments. I really like Hall too (slightly faster version of Herron) but I can't wait to see what Berry can do at this level.

I agree about the lack of a dominant stud RB, ND. Our backs rise and fall with the OL's performance. I'm skeptical of our RB's because our line has been so up and down. I'm hoping the maybe Hyde can get us yards when we need them even when our line is having an off day.

Boom's better now that he's learned to pick up his feet. I've seen some runs that remind me of Roger Craig from him. I also really like the way Saine and Boom seemed to push (positively) each other when they alternated PT last season. If that continues, I think we'll be fine. Saine, like any back, is a different animal when he runs hard. He seems to be doing that now. That kind of effort coupled with his speed is sick.

They both had 14 carries in the Rose Bowl with Saine having 3 yards more rushing, and didn't Saine start (and score the game's first TD)? So if the Rose Bowl tells us anything, it's Saine 1A and Herron 1B, not the other way around.

You're right, of course. My impression watching the game was that Herron was in for more total plays, but I don't know where to find that kind of info. I'd like to think that Saine's abilities catching the ball out of the backfield would merit more reps, if only because it puts more pressure on the defense to account for him at all times. I loved seeing that becoming a key part of the offense.

I would like to see Herron and Saine both get on the field at the same time every now and then next year. Either with Herron in the backfield and Saine in the slot (maybe a little bubble screen??) or both of them in the backfield.

It's good that the Bucks are so deep at a position highly susceptible to injury, though I hope they all stay healthy.

Where to start? Saine has been running just as hard as Herron since his recovery. That said, Herron moved the pile on at least one run in the Rose Bowl IIRC, and had several runs this year where he moved the pile. Obviously he, or Saine, can't move the pile like, or as often as, Beanie did, but Herron's no slouch.

This thread could be really cool to go back to in 4-5 years... I'd love to see how many of these guys end up getting drafted and how high. I agree that Saine is the front runner to be 1A but from a '2011 and beyond' perspective I'll be rooting for Herron to have a big enough year this year that he's ready to go pro. And I don't mean that as a knock on Herron... I just love the potential behind him.

Seems like with Pryor's growth and the improvement of our passing game (We should have some receivers step up to replace those leaving) all the backs will look much better next year because there aren't going to be 8 or 9 defenders in the box. I also like the idea of working two guys on to the field at the same time, get as much talent on the field at once. Should be fun to watch.

10 Things We Learned About OSU?s Run Game in 2009
By Brandon Castel

10. Hamstring injuries are legit. Many people were ready to write off Brandon Saine after he disappeared during his sophomore season thanks to a hamstring injury suffered during fall camp. The injury cost him 29 practices, but it was hard to understand why he couldn?t work his way back into the mix during the season. If we learned anything from Saine?s emergence this season and the Jaamal Berry situation, however, it?s that hamstring injuries are no joke, especially for running backs who have to do a lot of planting and cutting. Like Saine last year, Berry had his entire season derailed because of a nagging hamstring that wouldn?t go away. Unlike Saine, Berry ended up redshirting because of the injury.

I think that both of the running backs coming in should reshirt. At least Rod Smith. He could really be special. The staff should teach him running back and the slot reciever position.

My projection for the next few years

2010- Terelle Pryor will still run the ball especially in big games like Miami, Wisky, and Iowa. So, look for him to have 500+ yards.

I really like Boom and I am upset that some people are doubting his potential. As a I said with Zoom last when he had critics. Give Boom the ball not in the shotgun formation and see what will happen.

Brandon Saine will look like the back we seen in high school and will have over +1,000 rushing and 300 recieving yards.

Look for Hall to return kicks.

Mr. Berry will have some nice runs. I see him coming on late this season as he recovers from his injury.

As you look at our depth and options both of the backs coming should rs.

2011- Terelle will be more of passer which will open up some running lanes and touches for more backs.

Boom will be like lee suggs of virginia tech. He will be a senior and most likely a captian. He will have close to 1,000 yards rushing.

Berry will be a stud. Electrify the crowds with his blazing speed and his great vision.

Carlos Hyde gets in and starts reminding fans of beanie or Iowa's Shonn Green.

Hall get his time as all weapons will be used to get to the NC.

2012-

TP is gone and OSU reverts back I-formation.

Hall and Berry- will be the real deal but Rod Smith will do it all as reciever and RB.

Hyde will put together some punishing runs.

On a side note Stoneburner will be great this season.

2013-

Smith and Hyde are incredible.

That all sounds nice, but why on earth would you move a RB like Smith to WR? What are u basing this on that he can be a slot WR?
And I think Berry would be returning kicks, battling with Fields, Jackson and Zoom next year. Hall has proved himself as a RB and will get somemore carries, IMO. Hyde shouldn't be RS after going to a prep school for a year. I'm sure he's more ready for college ball than Smith at this point, and Smith should maybe RS.
And why do u think that we're going back to the I when Pryor graduates? The QBs we're going after to succeed him (Miller, Jones and the kid from FL) all work in spread offenses like Pryor did. And I don't see why the coaching staff wouldn't bring them along the same way they did TP.
JMO, I disagreed with a number of your points, mainly using Smith as a WR when the kids seems like a Beenie/Clarett type who runs the ball 20-25 times a game.

I think our next quarterback will take more snaps from under the center. I think Graham will develop while nobody is watching into a solid qb. I think our talent at running back demands it. You have to remember that Tressel adapts to his personell. When terelle leaves Stoneburner will be a senior as well as Reid Fragel. We will have homan and boren at fb. We will have some developed OL. Two TEs, great FBs leads, and running backs make us bring back smash mouth play-action offense.
The reason I would like rod smith to used in the slot is because he reminds of an Anquan Boldin type of reciever. He's is 6'3 220. Let him catch some balls in slot and turn it up the field against corners and safeties. I am getting excited just thinking about it. Or I dare say David Boston.
