Anyone writing about the 2010 defensive backfield who neglects to mention Nate Ebner does so at their own peril...

Star search is on in Ohio State Buckeyes' football team's secondary

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- For several seasons, Ohio State basically has been going without a backup at one of its starting positions. So while the Buckeyes must fill the safety holes created by the loss of seniors Kurt Coleman and Anderson Russell, who combined to start 74 games in their Buckeye careers, there is other work to be done in the secondary this spring.
Ohio State's "star" position, what the Buckeyes call the fifth defensive back they require the roughly 70 percent of the time they are in a nickel defense, is auditioning several candidates.
"We've never, ever had a backup or a third guy at that spot," OSU safeties coach Paul Haynes said Thursday after Ohio State's ninth of 15 practices this spring. "We always just had a No. 1 guy. So we're just trying to make sure we can move some guys around and try some different things."
New safeties, but same CBs back for Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio ? After years of sharing so much with graduating college teammates, those left behind have to let go in order to move on.
Starting cornerback Devon Torrence learned a lot from his good friends in the secondary, safeties Kurt Coleman and Anderson Russell. But it hit him this spring that it's the nature of the college sport that some careers end as others begin.
"It's always a big loss when you lose players like that," Torrence said during Ohio State's spring workouts. "They really knew the defense. It's a really big loss but we 'bring 'em in and bring 'em out' here, so it's going to be pretty good to see how the new guys do."
Filling holes left behind by the departing seniors are Jermale Hines and Orhian Johnson, their backups a year ago and now considered the starters.
Hines talks about Coleman and Russell, the third- and fifth-leading tacklers for Ohio State a year ago, in the present tense.
"I learned a lot from them," the senior said. "Those guys are real film junkies. They work hard at everything they do, are real leaders. Whatever happens, they take the blame for it and keep it going."
10. Ohio State Safeties
Kurt Coleman wasn?t always consistent, but when he was producing he was a big-time playmaker and game-changer (most notably in last year?s Wisconsin win), and Anderson Russell was a solid free safety. It?s Ohio State, so more talent is waiting in the wings, but Jermale Hines has to show he?s up to the task in place of Russell while Orhian Johnson leads a promising group to fight for the strong safety gig.

The good news is we believe the defensive pressure may cover up the growth problems in the back end.

But I don't remember hearing too much from Howard or Brown, did anyone see any good things from those 2 at the spring game?
