The Vuvuzela: Coming to SEC Stadiums - Chris Littmann - The Sporting Blog - Sporting News

Just when you thought you couldn't hate them any more... :shake:

Yes I realize OSU had students interested in these abominations, but fortunately intelligent adults won out there. ESPN has to be thrilled, what with saving money on commentators since everyone will have the game on mute to avoid insanity.

SEC school could pay big cowbells

Mississippi State University?s athletic department found out Wednesday just how costly it might be if Bulldog fans don?t follow new rules governing the use of cowbells during football games. Southeastern Conference athletic directors meeting in Orlando, Fla., finalized a fine structure, according to MSU AD Scott Stricklin: $5,000 for the first offense, $25,000 for the second and $50,000 for the third. The fines will be per game in which a violation or violations were deemed to occur, not per violation. The fine structure will be capped at $50,000, and the step-ladder will reset itself if a school goes three years without violating it. Though artificial noisemakers are of paramount interest to MSU fans, the fine structure is in place for schools that violate regulations governing when sound can be played through the stadium public address system, too. ?It just reinforces that we?ve got two excellent reasons to make sure that we?re going to abide by the plan,? Stricklin said, noting the fine structure and the fact MSU has been given a one-year window to prove to the SEC it can abide by the rules. State?s athletic budget is the smallest in the SEC. Its 2010-11 budget is $37.4 million, a figure that excludes some private donations. Stricklin said he expects the league to determine whether a violation took place by using the league representative assigned to each game and feedback from opposing schools.

would you say any of those guys "turned down" the job?

I guess what i'm asking is: Was Ohio State basically forced to settle for Tressel?

tough to say settle when you look at the results, but the guy had zero experience as a D1 head coach.

at the time, was this considered a good hire by the fan base?

Without debating the semantics of whether D1-AA was still D1 football, I believe Geiger took the long view during that coaching search and Tressel was easily his number one guy.

I think he knew OSU would sell itself regardless of whether he went with a "name" guy (Bellotti/Gruden) and focused more on getting a guy with strong Ohio ties (after outsider Cooper) and a proven ability to manage a program both on and off the field (after Cooper's locker room had deteriorated).

Glen Mason seemed like a solid pick, a fairly successful Big Ten coach who would crawl back to Columbus to coach OSU, and frankly I bet Tressel just blew him and everybody else out of the water during his interview. I can only imagine how excited Geiger got as he realized just how perfect JT was for this program. I know when I heard about 4 national championships by this in-state guy, and then when I started to listen to him, I was all-in for Tressel right away.

I watched the Tressel hire from afar (I was stationed in the UK at the time). Casual CFB fans snickered because JT was far from a big name (I do remember hearing rumblings that da U was interested in him before they hired Butch, can anybody verify/back me up on this?), but I said from the second it was announced, due to my familiarity with JT at YSU, that it was a homerun hire. Anybody that knew JT knew he "got" what it meant to be a Buckeye. He "got" the traditions. He "got" how important Ohio kids were to the program. He "got" The Game. Something Coop, for all his success, never did.

Now as for the pickle LSU seems to be in with Miles, if he underachieves again this year, and has some more in game blunders, I don't care what his record is, you gotta shitcan him. If that means scouring the nation for a lesser known coach because a "big name" won't take the job...you do it. LSU is now a big time program, with big time resources, I think they can find a better coach. Leave Miles, and you'll continue to settle for 8-5/9-4 seasons including one or two losses that will make you want to put your head through a wall. The guy won in spite of himself with mainly Saban's kids his first couple of years. I don't see him getting back to that level IMO...

Yep. JT was interviewed by Miami in 1995 before they went with Davis.

this is a big year.
our schedule is tougher than normal this year.

I don't have a set number of games he must win before I convert to the "fire Les Miles" bandwagon, but I'll keep y'all posted.

Hell, I don't even know who I would want to replace him (of the guys who are realistically available).

As long as Florida, Alabama and Louisiana State continue to completely dominate they will be considered the best in college football. Make no mistake that the rest of the Southeastern Conference is not included in that statement. Now if/when Georgia, Auburn, Tennessee and Arkansas start winning national championships then we are all fucked...:tongue2:
