"Can't believe he was too scared to do this in 30 degree weather in a BigTen Pool!"

He must be practicing there. In the video, he was fully dressed.

I'm surprised that you'd like to keep Leslie around considering how much furniture you've destroyed off your deck because of him. :biggrin:

so far, it's only 1 computer desk.

as far as Miles' goes, it's not so much that i'm pro-miles, it's more that I'm anti-firing a guy with the highest winning % in school history.

even if he has a 7-6 season this year, his winning % will be around 74%.

without looking it up, I can only think of 5 coaches with a winning % above 70 that was fired (or conveniently stepped down under pressure).

those schools were forced to settle for their 4th, 5th, or some times 6th choice.
and those schools saw their winning % drop by close to 25% over the next few years. I'm not interested in that happening here.

on that subject, maybe y'all can answer me a question.
Cooper had a good win % and was run off.
Was Tressel the 1st choice of the AD? or was he farther down the list?
just curious, because y'all are the only ones I can think of whose win % went up.

The AD was Andy Geiger. He may have considered Bob Stoops (from Ohio and red hot at the time) and John Gruden, but I don't believe they ever went through actual interviews. Pitt turned down a request to talk to former tOSU assistant Walt Harris.

Geiger interviewd Tressel, Ty Willingham, Mike Bellotti and Glen Mason (who played at tOSU), and JT was the guy he picked. Chris Spielman was also interviewed (thought by many to just be a courtesy), as was another long time tOSU assistant, Fred Pagac.

Geiger also hired Thad Matta for the bball program. He retired early shortly after the Clarett fiasco/ESPN witch hunt (falling on his sword for the good of the University), and Gene Smith has kept things on track, but Geiger hit 2 home runs with hires in the major sports.

thanks for the link!

been wondering about this since Miles seat began heating up.

I can't think of any other program that improved after firing a coach with that much success.

other schools i came up with:

Michigan pretty much forced Carr to retire (Miles, and a few others turned the job down)
Carr = .753 Dick Rod = .333

Nebraska fired Solich (Houston Nutt thought Arky was a better job than Nebraska?!!?)
Solich = .753 Callahan = .551

Miami shit-canned Coker (Schiano stayed at RUTGERS over going to Miami)
Coker = .800 Shannon = .552 (heading in right direction though)

Alabama (Stallings quit when a 10-3 season pissed off the fan base)
Stallings = .712 Dubose = .510

may be others i'm not thinking of

but pretty much like I thought, you run off a coach with that much success, and nobody wants to replace him. so you end up settling for even less than you had before.

would you say any of those guys "turned down" the job?

I guess what i'm asking is: Was Ohio State basically forced to settle for Tressel?

tough to say settle when you look at the results, but the guy had zero experience as a D1 head coach.

at the time, was this considered a good hire by the fan base?

I wouldn't say it a matter of 'settling' for Tressel. Stoops might have ended up with an offer, but he thought he couldn't leave Oklahoma days after winning the BCS Title game.

I believe that Geiger wanted JT over any of the other guys after doing the interviews, and then guys like Bellotti and Willingham were allowed to save face by 'withdrawing themselves from consideration' before Tressel was announced. Geiger recognized that JT was what the program needed (both on and off the field), even though there were other bigger names in the mix.

Most of the fans at the time wanted Mason, a few wanted Spielman (but he had almost no coaching experience). Those who knew Tressel fairly well (who were a minority) were pleased with the hire. He won over a lot of fans with his "in 310 days" speech at the bball game.
