The injury bug continues.....

Boston Red Sox 2B Dustin Pedroia on DL with broken foot - ESPN Boston
Pedroia placed on 15-day DL

SAN FRANCISCO -- Additional tests taken on Dustin Pedroia showed that the Red Sox second baseman has a nondisplaced fracture of the navicular bone in his left foot, manager Terry Francona said Saturday.

The Sox placed Pedroia on the 15-day disabled list and recalled infielder Angel Sanchez from Pawtucket. Sanchez arrived Saturday morning; Bill Hall is in the lineup at second base for the Sox in Saturday's game against the San Francisco Giants and is expected to assume the bulk of playing time in Pedroia's absence, barring a trade.

The injury showed up on a CT scan and MRI taken of the foot, Francona said.

"I'm upset,'' said Pedroia, who was on crutches, his foot in a walking boot. "It's pretty tough. I'll try to get back in there and heal as fast as possible.''

RED SOX THIRD BASEMAN ADRIAN BELTRE LEFT THE GAME IN THE BOTTOM OF THE SIXTH INNING WITH A LEFT HAMSTRING STRAIN.

Some good news though.....

Boston Red Sox pitcher Josh Beckett goes four innings in rehab start - ESPN Boston
Beckett strikes out four in rehab start

PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- Josh Beckett seems to have successfully passed the first official test on his road back to the Boston Red Sox rotation.

Beckett, who has been on the disabled list since May 19 because of a lower back strain, worked the first four innings of the Triple-A Pawtucket's game against the Syracuse Chiefs Sunday afternoon at McCoy Stadium.

The right-hander threw 68 pitches, 42 of which were strikes. Throwing mostly fastballs, Beckett surrendered only two hits, including a solo homer lofted to right-center by Jason Botts with two outs in his fourth and final inning.

Beckett, though, shrugged off that blast and finished with a flourish, whipping a 92-mile-an-hour fastball past former big-leaguer Kevin Mench, who notched the Chiefs' only other hit against Boston's erstwhile ace, a looping single to center in the second inning.

It was fun, Red Sox fans. Looking forward to our next trip to the friendly confines of Fenway Park. Can I make one recommendation? Put Big Puppy back on the special sauce.

Cheers,

A Rays fan

Boston's Youkilis out for season with thumb injury - MLB - Yahoo! Sports
Boston?s Youkilis out for season with thumb injury

BOSTON (AP)?The Boston Red Sox have lost Kevin Youkilis(notes) for the season with a torn muscle in his right thumb.

Manager Terry Francona said Thursday the first baseman will have season-ending surgery on Friday in Cleveland for the injury sustained Monday night in a 6-5 loss to the Cleveland Indians.

Youkilis is expected to be ready well before spring training starts.

The injury is the latest in a long line of them suffered by Boston. Batting fourth in the lineup for most of the season, Youkilis is hitting .307 with 19 homers and 62 RBIs. Francona said that Mike Lowell(notes), who came off the disabled list when Youkilis went on it Tuesday, is expected to play at least four of the next five games at first base.

MLB pitcher with 6.51 ERA has guaranteed $68 mil

Overpaid Red Sox:
Josh Beckett ($12.1 million) ? And he?ll make much more over the next four years, having signed a four-year deal in April worth $68 million. Boston?s return on investment so far resembles the slumping stock market, as Beckett?s ERA is an embarrassing 6.51 and he?s won just three games after spending two months on the DL.
John Lackey ($18.7 million) ? Sox deserve a hefty rebate, considering his 4.62 ERA and the fact he has allowed more hits (186, in 161.2 innings) than any pitcher in the American League.

Johnny Damon claimed on waivers by Boston Red Sox - ESPN Boston
Red Sox claim Johnny Damon

Could the Boston Red Sox be looking to recapture the magic of 2004 that brought an end of their 86-year World Series drought?

Detroit Tigers outfielder Johnny Damon confirmed to reporters Monday that he has been claimed on waivers by the Red Sox and that he has until Wednesday to decide whether he would waive his no-trade clause to return to Fenway Park.

The Red Sox are one of the teams from which Damon has no-trade protection. The 36-year-old outfielder said he was not sure whether he would accept a deal to return to Boston, where he was a long-haired, bearded folk hero as a key part of the 2004 "idiots" that ended the city's 86-year World Series title drought. But when a source close to Damon was asked if Damon was coming to Boston, the source said, "I doubt it. But we'll see.''

Damon vetoed possible move back to Boston.

only 6 games out as of this morning. Double header today. Need to string some wins together fast if they want to make a push.

Hardest division in baseball. If the Sox were in any other division they would either be winning it or within 1 game of first with the current record they have. In the AL East they are sitting in third.
