...and Shipley, Thomas, Kindle... who else am I missing? I know Texas just reloads, but that's an awful lot of talent and experience gone to be sitting in the top 5 at the start.

I bolded the biggest losses

QB McCoy
OT Ulatowski

OG Tanner
OC Hall
DE Kindle
DT Houston

DT Alexander
LB Muckleroy
FS Thomas

CB Beasley
PK Lawrence

I have a rooting interest in these guys since I've been Texas in two online dynasties. Well, everyone but Beasley, he couldn't cover anyone :p

i think Texas will be just fine without McCoy. it might have taken Gilbert a couple quarters to get his feet under him (understandable considering the circumstances), but Texas got going pretty good in the second half against the Tide. if McCoy doesn't go down, the Horns faceroll 'Bama.

The problem is the the unit that dominated that game was led by Thomas, Kindle, Muckleroy & Houston, who were all drafted last month. Texas has talent but has been up and down on defense over the years.

There are always plenty of growing pains with a new QB. Gilbert might have looked good for part of the game against Alabama, but that's certainly no indication that he will perform throughout the season at a level that justifies a #4 in the country ranking. Recall the last time that Texas had to replace a starting QB they had a 4-loss season (certainly nowhere near a #4 ranking).

My recollection of Texas the last time they replaced a starting QB is that after the home loss to tOSU, they worked their way back up to #4 in early November, and were poised for a possible rematch in the BCS Title game until Colt McCoy suffered a concussion on a QB sneak at the goal line vs Kansas State. He left that game, Texas ended up losing, and he wasn't himself as they lost their next game to aTm.

So prior to that concussion, they actually had the #4 ranking (AP poll of Nov 5th, 2006).

The Sporting News weighs in. While 'Bama-tOSU-Boise isn't much of a stretch as a Top 3; it is interesting that they have Miami at #4. The Week 2 match-up of the Miami OL vs. the Ohio State DL will make that pick look a little silly IMHO.

Phil Steele has Oklahoma as #1? WTF? link

  1. Oklahoma
  2. Ohio State
  3. Alabama
  4. TCU
  5. Nebraska
  6. Boise State
  7. Florida
  8. USC
  9. Miami, Fl
  10. Oregon

Riiiiiight...

Because that 5-loss team from last year is going to be SO much better after losing three of the top four picks in the draft.

Well 1 of those 3 didn't play last year for the Sooners. One can also make the case that Landy Jones will be better. Their D-Line returns talent and is always good. Texas won't be as good. All 5 losses were close. They blew everyone else out. The Big 12 is down. Beat Nebraska in the Big 12 championship game and boom you're undefeated.

The talk about whether we should be #2 or #3, along with Michigan's obvious and well-deserved absence from any poll, got me to thinking about how many times we've finished in the top two of the AP and/or UPI/Coaches poll compared to Michigan. So, I went over to cfbdatawarehouse.com and checked it out. Here's what I found:

Michigan all-time

1947 #2 AP
1948 #1 AP
1985 #2/#2 AP/Coaches
1997 #1/#2 AP/Coaches

Ohio State all-time

1942 #1 AP
1944 #2 AP
1954 #1/#2 AP/Coaches
1957 #2/#1 AP/Coaches
1961 #2/#2 AP/Coaches
1968 #1/#1 AP/Coaches
1970 #2 Coaches
1973 #2 AP
1996 #2/#2 AP/Coaches
1998 #2/#2 AP/Coaches
2002 #1/#1 AP/Coaches
2006 #2/#2 AP/Coaches

We have as many top-2 finishes since 1996 as Michigan has all-time. Michigan went 37 years (1948 to 1985) between top-2 finishes while our longest gap was 23 years (1973 to 1996). "The leaders and the best" my pasty ass.
