Nothing more than a handshake...the tournament as a whole will be evaluated at a later date. We are hoping to see it back here next year but the turnout was awful...less than 3,000 fans saw the finals on Sunday. The weather wasn't an issue for more than an hour on Saturday...and we still played at 5:30 (the game people saw us play was live).

Any chance of moving it back into May a couple of weeks before finals begin? Then, have some transportation options to get them over to Crew Stadium. It would seem to me that if you market it as an opportunity to watch some rugby and do some drinking on a nice Spring weekend, you'd get more than 3K in students alone.

Then again, I'm still waiting for the students to support Ohio State hockey.

Love the scowl. Grrr. :tongue2:

"Back when I played, we didn't even have to ruck. The other side was scared of us and just handed us the ball. We ate their hearts at the half. Consarnit, you young-ins just don't understand. If I was out there, you'd see a thing or two, I tell you, goshdarnit..."

AmericanRugbyNews.com Preseason Rankings

In keeping with a trend that we started at this time last year, which coincides with the release of the USA Today college football preseason rankings, we are releasing the ARN college rugby preseason rankings.

And with the establishment of the new College Premier League, we have had to make a slight change to the Down Under Endeavours Top 25 formula.

Beginning now we will be ranking teams that are in the CPL.

We would also like to acknowledge the ongoing support of Down Under Endeavours, which has stepped up for another year as the major sponsor of our Top 25.

If you're planning to go to New Zealand for next year's World Cup, contact Down Under Endeavours today to get the best airfares and mention that ARN referred you so you qualify for an extra discount.

Saturday night...

Saturday, September 18th - 6PM
Fred Beekamn Park - corner of Lane and Kenny

If you are going to the football game, why not stop by the OSU rugby game on your way home...the Buckeyes open the 2010-2011 campaign against Big 10 foe Indiana. For the first time in school history the team will be opening the season with a freshman 9/10 combination that is talented but obviously inexperienced. Either way, they will be exciting to watch.

Also, the OSURFC has a Facebook page...check it out here:

Cal Rugby Cut From Intercollegiate Varsity, Will Remain 'Varsity Club' Sport

After weeks of speculation about downsizing, the University of California announced that Cal men's rugby would be one of five sports cut from the university's intercollegiate athletics program effective 2012.

Unlike the other four sports, men's and women's gymnastics, lacrosse and baseball, the rugby team will be classified as the school's first "varsity club" sport and will compete against the same teams that it has during its time as a varsity sport.

"It's not over," senior wing Blaine Scully said. "We're just really confused and we're waiting to find out what it all means ... We'll approach this season the way we always do; chins up, shoulders back."
By relegating rugby from the intercollegiate ranks, Cal removes its most traditionally successful varsity program. The Bears have won 25 national championships since 1980 and including nine since 2000. It also means the end of an intercollegiate team that, despite being cut in the lieu of a financial crisis, was financially self-sufficient.

Cont'd ...

i played four years of rugby at john carroll where i played literally every position in the pack for at least one game. however, i played mostly hooker and second row. i love the game and enjoy talking about it. down at the ohio rugby classic, we played osu b-side a couple of times. he went to overtime in 2009, my senior year. it was a great game and i wish i was still playing. just thought it might be fun to let you guys know. cheers!

One of our assistant coaches is a former second row for John Carroll...played in the early 2000s...

This Saturday we play the Miami Redhawks at home at 1PM. Obviously we don't expect a lot of people given the conflict with the football game...

To my knowledge, Cal was the only school with a "varsity" rugby side and, therefore, better funding, etc. This is good news for the sport in the US.
