2010 In-state Players to Watch

Cincinnati.Com | Cincinnati Enquirer | High School Sports Blog

If there was any doubt that Simon Kenton senior running back Miles Simpson is a touchdown waiting to happen, there was this stat line from Friday night against Boone County - 293 yards, five touchdowns - on 14 carries - all in the first half. That's a big yowzer. For those scoring at home, Simpson is averaging 10.3 yards per carry, and doing it against a pretty good schedule.

Carpenter looking for Big Ten offers
Defensive back Nathan Carpenter (Lancaster, Ohio/Lancaster) has scholarship offers from Toledo, Akron, Kent State and Ohio University.
"I'm looking at all four," Carpenter said. "And I'm also talking to Ohio State and Michigan State. I'm still looking to see if anything happens with those two."
Carpenter has official visits set to Toledo on Dec. 5 and Akron on Dec. 12.
He has attended all of Ohio State's home games this season. His older brother, Bobby, was an outstanding linebacker for the Buckeyes and currently plays for the Dallas Cowboys. Father Rob played for Miami of Ohio and in the NFL with the New York Giants.
The 5-10, 200-pounder has made 48 tackles with an interception in seven games. He has also rushed for 990 yards and is averaging 11 yards per carry.

Yes ask people who have seen them both.

I've seen both, and I prefer McVey. Unpredictably fast with a stellar nose for the ball, Scott has a knack for making plays, and big ones at that.

I think Shaq has alot of athleticism, he's instinctive but I haven't seen the discipline out of him that I've seen from Scott. Watch film on McVey and try to find him out of place just once. On top of that, versatility is a big perk with Scott as you can move him around the field to create multiple looks for your defense.

Both are very good and I expect success from both of them, but I prefer McVey.

Carpenter steps out of long family shadow to lead Golden Gales

LANCASTER -- The comparisons were much harder to elude than the opponents diving at his legs or grabbing at his jersey. The youngest in a long line of football talent, Nathan Carpenter was accustomed to growing up in the shadows of his father and three older brothers.

Accustomed to but not contented.

The Lancaster senior broke the Carpenter mold in his final year as a Golden Gale, as he became a three-pronged threat in a season in which he knew he'd be relied upon.

Carpenter is the Eagle-Gazette's offensive player of the year.

"Coming into the season, I knew we only had 11 or 12 seniors and that it wouldn't be as strong a class as we've had," Carpenter said. "I wanted to lead the team. I had to fill as many spots as I could."

Carpenter played running back and amassed 1,334 yards on 127 carries (10.5 yards per carry) and scored 17 touchdowns. He also kicked field goals and extra points, returned kicks and played defensive back -- tasks none of brothers Bobby, Jonathan or Georgie had to do regularly.

Cont'd ...
