with Modano's status up in the air, Holland is more or less powerless at the moment. He'll know more towards the trade deadline.

BTW someone call the NHL and tell them that putting Ovie vs. Crysby in the Winter Classic is great and all, but doing it on New Year's day up against the bulk of the College football bowls - ESPECIALLY when Penn State happens to be playing....I mean come on here, who is really going to be watching it?

A little bit of logical would go a long way in the NHL....
it generates hype. like the flyers game it likely will suffer psu drag. its still creates ticket sales, network revenue and general hype. sid vs ovie should allow for good pr run up. people on nye will be on their astrocans, and likely surfing, even if games are close (think about how much scrolling you do on nyday). even last years game drew what 4m viewers? thats a good thing for hockey, it will be largest nhl draw of the regular season (and maybe of the entire year)

also note that the canadiens will play the flames in feb at mcmahon in feb for hockey day in canada. attendance should be in the high 30s (37k+)

Hockey Day in Canada works for Canada. Playing your marquee regular season game on the same day as the traditional day for college football bowl games is stupid.

the NHL sucks at PR anyway, right now it's Cid vs. Ovie, but what happens if the Craps continue to tank and/or Cid gets hurt?

the numbers pull. the reality is people will be flipping channels on that day. people recognize both those names, regardless if they are hockey fans. sports fan know crosby and ovie. the ratings will be on par with christmas day basketball games, for no other reasons that more american tvs will be on.

disagree, christmas day basketball games get ratings on par with new years day hockey games...

the NBA is dead man walking in this country. Put the Rags against Detroit or Chicago vs. Pittspuke on TV (maybe even as a double-header) and see what happens.

I would be willing to bet that the NHL wins the ratings war.

Me

I'm pumped for that game. Also pumped for the documentary HBO is working on. Crosby was mic'd for the Buffalo game and it was pretty rough. I think we'll hear some non-robot Crosby if they air stuff from that game.

TOOTOO ENTERS NHL'S SUBSTANCE ABUSE-BEHAVIOURAL HEALTH PROGRAM

NASHVILLE -- Nashville Predators forward Jordin Tootoo voluntarily has entered into in-patient care through the NHL-NHLPA substance abuse and behavioural health program.
The league announced Tootoo's move Monday afternoon in a release. Tootoo's care will be monitored by doctors from both the NHL and the NHLPA.
Tootoo will be paid his full salary. The NHL says in a statement he will face no penalty as long as he complies with his treatment and the followup care program.
He has 10 points through 32 games and a team-high 47 penalty minutes.
"We offer Jordin the full support of his teammates, coaches and the organization," Predators general manager David Poile said in a statement. "There is no timetable for his return, and we will have no further comment at this time."
