2010-2011 Men's Basketball (Outright Big Ten & BTT Champs)

Hopefully Dickie V's pick of OSU preseason #2 with Duke preseason #1 is a tip. I've noticed in the past he's used his preseason rankings as a means to promote an ESPN matchup (e.g., last year he ranked UK in the preseason when they had a bad team that didn't belong in top-25, and commented about their early season game with UNC through that ranking).
I know that if the almighty has a prediction I will take that to the bank:lol: I hope this preseason choice of Ohio State being #2 next year was made before Turner declared for the draft. If you start believing Dickie, you have lost a lot of credibility as far as I am concerned.

Vitale picked tOSU #2 knowing that Turner had completed his tenure in Columbus.
Would you mind asking him who are starting five is going to be next year and what type of offense we are going to run. I am very reluctant to put Ohio State at #2 in the country. Purdue and Michigan State are going to be tough enough in the Big Ten conference.

His more pressing need, meanwhile, will be filling the vacancy on his staff created when assistant coach Alan Major left Friday for Charlotte, his first head-coaching job.

Major, 41, worked for Matta for nine years, the first three at Xavier. He is the fourth assistant Matta will have to replace in the past two years.

John Groce left in June 2008 to become coach at Ohio University. Archie Miller departed last April to join his brother, Sean, who moved from Xavier to Arizona. Dan Peters left last June to become Akron's director of basketball operations.

Potential replacements for Major could include two young coaches who played for Matta at Butler, Joel Cornette and LaVall Jordan.

Both were assistants at Butler and Iowa under Todd Lickliter, who was fired by the Hawkeyes at the end of the season. Cornette is a Cincinnati native, and Jordan has recruited Chicago - which was Major's territory at Ohio State - and Michigan.

I can only see the PG coming from a frosh or Simmons if we want to maintain our offensive game. And he will have to grow up in a hurry.

While I am somewhat disturbed at the PG position for this upcoming year, I am equally concerned about the Center, Dallas will never be an offensive star. JMO. And he can't handle that position alone. We lost to Tenn because of the weaknesses they capitalized, again jmo.
Sullinger or Z will have to step up big time.
I was disappointed in the lack of minutes Z got last year in quality time. I believe that if you are going to use a player to win with he needs to get lots of meaningful time.
Madsen played well at times as a backup and that held the minutes down for Z. And that will hurt us this year.
Sullinger may be the star for next year but is he going to be able to overcome the cebters of the B10 and other majors? Good question.
Unless he really surprises me I see him here for 2 years at least.

rumors are floating around that purdue's jajuan johnson and illinois' demetri mccamey will officially declare for the draft but will hold off on signing with an agent. e'twaun moore is also rumored to be doing the same thing. for the sake of the big ten, i'd hate to see any of those players leave early. however, johnson leaving would definitely boost ohio state's chances of facing duke in the challenge, which is a small consolation at the expense of a truly outstanding league.

i do think it would be wise, though, if the aforementioned players declare for the draft but not hire an agent until they receive credible information about their expected draft position. most juniors who have a reasonable chance of being drafted after their senior seasons and at least a remote chance of being drafted after their junior seasons would probably benefit from attending the pre-draft workouts. the experience alone would be worthwhile.

Chippewas could be close to landing Trey Zeigler | freep.com | Detroit Free Press

Rivals' #26 overall prospect, Trey Zeigler, is expected to spurn the Wolverines to play for Central Michigan where his dad coaches.

This is quite a big blow, as GBW had recently thought Trey was favoring UM.
Don't they always overestimate their chances at landing basketball recruits?

At any rate, the article is bizarre, comparing CMU to Butler. Butler has had a lot more sustained success than CMU has.

OSU could still end up with an extremely high preseason ranking. The more guys that declare and stay in the draft, the better the chances that OSU is a preseason top-10 and possibly top-5 team. Guys like Ekpe Udoh, Wes Johnson, Ed Davis, and Elliott Williams declaring and planning on staying in the draft will help OSU be definitely ahead of several more teams, at least on paper, even comparing where things were a week ago. Almost all of the top players are declaring for the draft this year - there is a very short list of possible/likely 1st rounders that have yet to declare their intentions or say they're coming back - Greg Monroe, Solomon Alabi, Gordon Hayward and Kyle Singler - I don't think any of them have recently came out and said they are returning for 2010-11.

"If I'm second round this year I probably could better my stock (as a senior). Second round is not guaranteed money," McCamey said Wednesday after declaring himself eligible for the June 24 draft. "If you go second round there is no guarantee you will make an NBA team even if you do get drafted in the second round. If they say second round and there's no possible way a team will draft me in the first round, I'll be back in Champaign."
