2010-2011 Men's Basketball (Outright Big Ten & BTT Champs)

Oakland added to the schedule

Ohio State announced today that it has added a game against Oakland to the 2010-11 schedule. The Golden Grizzlies will visit Value City Arena on Dec. 23. They return three starters from a team that finished 26-9 last season, won the Summit League and qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

The Buckeyes are permitted 27 regular-season games as long as they participate in a multiple-team tournament, which counts as an additional game in the eyes of the NCAA. The first four games of the season comprise the tournament, giving Ohio State a total of 31 actual games before they start post-season play in March.

Per Bob Baptist on his Dispatch blog, OSU will have a private scrimmage against Baylor in the Schott prior to this season. This scrimmage is similar to the one the Bucks had at Miami (OH) a couple years ago in that it is closed to the public and there will be no official stats/scores.

Always loved this. Im not sure why coaches from out of conference don't do this more often with each other. Especially coaches with big family trees at nearby top programs. A game like this would be much more beneficial than a practice. Although I wouldn't reveal too much scheme wise as a precaution.

First four NCAA games in Dayton

The Division I Men?s Basketball Committee announced today that the University of Dayton will host the 2011 NCAA First Four -- the four first-round games of the NCAA Tournament -- on March 15 and 16, a Tuesday and Wednesday.

Two games will be between the four No.16 seeds. The other two games will pit the last four at-large teams selected for the 68-team field.

Tickets priced at $80 and $100 will be available beginning Oct. 1. The games will be televised in primetime on truTV.

Dayton hosted the opening-round game for the past 10 years and consistently attracted extraordinary crowds, including over 11,000 in 2009,? said Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith, chair of the Division I men?s basketball committee.

The enthusiasm the UD staff and the local fans demonstrated for hosting that game did not go unnoticed, so it makes sense to us to conduct the inaugural First Four in Dayton.

?We explored different options, including playing the first-round games at multiple sites as well as the possibility of playing all games on one day."

Love the news about the students. I really hope we can get something going with that. Has anyone heard anything about the PG position lately?

I went to the Ohio State-Marshall football game and saw Thad. I yelled at him "you gonna win the National Championship this year with Jared Sullinger??" and then I was like "you just gotta find a Point Guard first" and he seemed to like this and laughed...

:) Go Buckeyes.

I think we will start hearing some news about the PG position one supervise practices begin in a couple weeks. Also, you are in charge of the students so have your buddies get their butts to the game and quit yelling at our basketball coach:)

Release: 09/24/2010

COLUMBUS, Ohio-The official start of practice sessions are a few weeks away but members of the Ohio State men's basketball team are hard at work nonetheless.

Individual skill sessions are underway as are classes for the seven newcomers and returning veterans.

Dave Dickerson, in his first year working as an assistant coach for Thad Matta's Buckeyes, put the Buckeye big men through drills Thursday in the practice facility at the Schottenstein Center.

The Buckeyes begin full team practices Oct. 15. The team will host Walsh in an exhibition game Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. and then open the season officially Nov. 12 against North Carolina A&T. That game, which tips at 7 p.m. in Value City Arena, is the first of 20 home games for the Buckeyes, a school record for home contests in a season.

Okay students let's show your stuff. Either that or quit complaining.

yesterday about the basketball team visiting with students while they pick up their football tickets at the Schottenstein Center on Friday elicited a question about when students' basketball tickets go on sale.
I checked with Ohio State this morning. The answer: Oct. 5 for season tickets (all nine Big Ten games plus one non-conference game).

Students have been allotted about 1,400 seats along the south sideline and in the west end zone in Value City Arena. The allotment roughly matches students' average attendance at games last season, associate athletics director Bill Jones said.

So you're complaining about wearing long shorts?

This is September (aka the offseason) ... I guess you have to have something to talk about.

No the long shorts are fine. It is in combination with the skin tight small jerseys that we look ridiculous. I apologize I thought this was a shared sentiment. I wouldn't have put it so harshly otherwise.

Around the Big Ten 2010-11: Ohio State
Published by Dylan Burkhardt
on October 11, 2010

Next up in our Around the Big Ten preview series: Ohio State. The Columbus Dispatch?s Bob Baptist stepped in to answer our questions about the Buckeyes this year. You can hear more from Baptist on his twitter account or his blog.

Losing the most productive college basketball player is obviously a tough blow to handle but this is still a very talented roster. Is this a team that compete for the Big Ten championship?

It can, but I think bad things would have to happen to Michigan State and Purdue for it to happen ? like, Kalin Lucas and Robbie Hummel going down again. And I don?t want to see that happen. Michigan State is just as deep if not deeper than it was last season, and Purdue has the best threesome of any team in the conference in Hummel, E?Twaun Moore and JaJuan Johnson. Ohio State can?t match either, in my opinion, at least not at this point. I could be persuaded differently come February, but I don?t see it changing unless, as I said, Sparty and the Boilers have health issues.

Jared Sullinger highlights a star-studded freshmen class. Can you break down the incoming freshmen and how much they are expected to contribute?

Sullinger, from everything I hear out of ?open gym? ? closed gym, actually ? is a load and is going to give people problems on the offensive end. Defensively, I?ll be interested to see how his matchups are handled by the coaching staff. One matchup I?m looking forward to is watching him and Draymond Green of Michigan State bang on each other.

I also hear good things about point guard Aaron Craft, who naturally is going to have his share of doubters because he played at a small high school. Craft, I?m told, plays within himself and does the things the team needs him to do, which is take care of the ball, set up his teammates, defend and make the open shots he gets.

DeShaun Thomas could be a factor at the 4 when Sullinger is at the 5 or not in the game. He can score. The question will be how much his man scores on him.

Jordan Sibert appears recovered from his knee injury and making shots, Matta said recently. What Matta wants to see more of is for Sibert to embrace a role of defensive stopper and use his length and athleticism to become a lockdown defender on the perimeter. Over the years, that?s been the surest way for freshmen to earn early playing time under Matta, on the defensive end. David Lighty is Exhibit A in that argument.

Lenzelle Smith is recovering from wrist surgery and may or may not be ready for the start of the season.

J.D. Weatherspoon is a jumping jack who can rebound and flourish in a transition game, but he may get caught in a numbers game. Speculation is he will redshirt. Matta said he won?t make that call until he has to.
