2010-11 bowl projections

A note of what I think is pure awesomeness that doesn't involve SOS or AQs or Big East 5-7 conference winners or plunger raping...

Army is now 6-4 and is bowl eligible...meaning I believe we will see all 3 service academies in bowl games this year. Well done fellas, very...well...done. Must see TV for me.

Now back to top 12s and Utah and apefucking...

I'm pretty sure that with the schedules still ahead of TCU and Boise that Boise jumps TCU in the polls and snags that Rose Bowl auto bid if they don't sneak into the title game.

That's probable at this point, but not certain. Boise State has 3 games left to win, and TCU only has one shitty opponent, so Boise State will gain more in the computers that TCU will over the next 3 weeks. What the human voters will do depends on how Boise State looks against Fresno State and Nevada.

TCU needed to stay ahead in the human polls, and the bad Utah loss to ND, along with the close final score against San Diego State, had a lot of voters flipping back to Boise State this week. But they could easily flip again if Boise has 1 shaky game.

If it's Oregon-Auburn in the Title Game and Boise State and Wisconsin in the Rose, the other bowls will probably be:

Sugar - 1-loss LSU vs. 1-loss Ohio State
Orange - ACC Champ (Va Tech) vs. TCU or Stanford
Fiesta - same matchup of Big XII champ vs Big East Champion

Once again, if the Sugar Bowl takes TCU or Stanford, the Orange Bowl commitee is jumping up and down if 1-loss tOSU is available.

So everybody should relax about the process, and just pull for the Buckeyes to win their last 2 games. 1-loss tOSU won' be in the Fiesta Bowl this year, but they'll end up in either the Rose, Sugar or Orange.

I would actually like to see Oregon fall to the Rose Bowl if Wiscy is there and proceed to absolutely curb stomp them. Maybe this is a violation of the "support your conference" fan law and I should be ashamed. Maybe Bret Bielema is so unlikeable that said fan law doesn't apply. Maybe I'm just bitter.

I'd also like to see Wisconsin play BSU in the Rose Bowl if we can't go, because I'd love for Wiscy to just pound the ball down Boise's fucking throat for 60 minutes.

While I would have no doubt of Wisky's ability to do just that, what I would question is their ability to stop Boise's offense.
I might not be sold on the Broncos, but they have great balance and would move the ball effectively against Bucky.

I'd like to see Ohio State play Boise State in the Rose bowl and kick the crap out of them. I'm sick and tired of seeing them play a "nothing schedule and get ranked in the top 5; and people saying they deserve to be in the BCS Championship game. A 2 loss Alabama team is "light years" better than the no loss Bosie State. If they would happen to beat Ohio State them (maybe) I would concede that they are that good.

That would probably be my 2nd choice. LSU in the Sugar Bowl would be a great game; however, I hate to see a bowl opponent have "home field advantage".

Keep the streak alive: The Buckeyes have played in a BCS game for five consecutive postseasons. No other team has more than a two-year BCS streak going.

The record for most consecutive bowl appearances is 35, set by Nebraska from 1969 through 2003. Michigan's 33-year streak, achieved from 1975 through 2007 is second-best. Everybody say THANK YOU DickRod for not going to a bowl in 2008.

Let's assume the BCS standings end up where there are now..

your 7 guarenteed BCS participants are:

Oregon-Pac 10
Auburn-SEC
Wisky-Big 10
Nebraska or Oklahoma St-Big12
Va TEch-ACC
Pitt-Big East
TCU- Non AQ conf but in top 12

3 at large choices between the following 5 teams (I'm eliminating the loser of the Big 12 title game due to a second loss):

Ohio State
LSU
Boise St
Michigan State
Stanford

Question #1: Would the BCS have the cohones to leave out an undefeated Boise?

Question #2: Is the SEC guarenteed two spots based solely on their awesomness?

Question #3: Would Sparty even be in the discussion at 11-1?

I say you can cross off Sparty right of the bat. They just aren't going to get a bid. LSU will definitely get in due to their 11-1 record in the almighty SEC. That leaves 2 spots for OSU, Stanford, and Boise. Lets just say I hope Stanford or Boise/TCU lose one or we jump Wisky. It would be a tough pill to swallow to finish 11-1 and not make a BCS game.
True but it would be a great opportunity to take it out on a SEC team in the Capital One. I'd love to see a Alabama-tOSU match-up.

Good post. I'd guess that OSU would get the nod over Stanford, as OSU would mean more money to the bowl making the choice, and although OSU's record would admittedly be without a marquee win, isn't Stanford's the same?

Yeah there is no way that a bowl is going to take Stanford over Ohio State as an at large..it's all about the dollar signs. Stanford can't even fill their own stadium for games with ranked opponents. (Saturday night game against Arizona: Large portions of the stadium empty)

At this point I could see Oregon AND Auburn both losing late.

Let's just play with that idea a little bit. If Oregon loses to 'Zona or OSUw and Auburn loses to 'Bama AND Cocky:

Title: BSU v LSU

Rose: Wisconsin v. Oregon
Sugar: South Carolina v. Ohio State
Fiesta: Nebraska v. USF (or whoever the fuck wins the BigEast)
Orange: Virginia Tech v. TCU

God, that would be awful, but then imagine if Northwestern or tSUN knocks off Wisconsin.

Title: BSU v LSU

Rose: Ohio State v. Oregon
Sugar: South Carolina v. TCU
Fiesta: Nebraska v. USF
Orange: Virginia Tech v. Stanford

I'd say that's even worse. THEN imagine if in addition to all of that, one of the Oklahoma schools beats the 'Huskers in the BigX(II)CG and Stanford drops one.

Title: BSU v LSU

Rose: Ohio State v. Oregon
Sugar: South Carolina v. TCU
Fiesta: Oklahoma v. USF
Orange: Virginia Tech v. Nebraska

Fuck, something needs to be done about this BCS shit.

There's no way the voters will put LSU in the BCS title game when they can't even make the SEC championship game.

Depends on which Bucky defense decides to show up. If the defense they always seems to bring against us is what they put on the field against BSU, they will hit them hard...BSU will not have faced a defense anywhere near as physical as Wisconsin's.

The selection sequence is important. The BCS doesn't look at the overall group of teams and select 3 of 4 - each bowl looks out for themselves. In your scenario:

1) Rose Bowl gets Wisconsin and TCU, without any options
2) Sugar gets to replace Auburn, and takes hometown SEC-team #5 LSU, and there's nothing wrong with them doing that.
3) Sugar then selects the first at-large pick. They take tOSU - the biggest name and fanbase available for tourism, ticket sales, and TV Ratings.
4) Then the Orange has to select an opponent for Va Tech - they won't select Boise State since the teams already played, so they take the Okie-State-Nebraska loser or Stanford.
5) Then the Fiesta is stuck with the Big East winner to face the Big XII champion - and they have no selection options.

In your scenario, it's all up to to which 3 teams the Sugar and Orange prefer, and LSU and Ohio State will be two of the three, assuming they each only have 1 loss. If the Sugar Bowl pulls a surprise and takes Boise State or Stanford to face LSU, the Orange would be doing cartwheels at the chance to take Ohio State, which hasn't been there since the late '70s.

So don't worry about tOSU being stiffed in the selection process - if the Buckeyes win their last two games, they'll be in a BCS Bowl.

regarding #3 above:
It would be really hard for the Sugar Bowl to pass on the hype of a 2007 title game rematch. I feel a lot better knowing that the Sugar would have the first at large selection.

Another question for the masses:
Would you rather play the ACC in the Orange or Bama in the Cap one? I say you have to play in the BCS. That is what it is all about these days. However, playing Bama in the Cap One isn't too bad of a door prize.

I prefer the BCS Bowl, regardless of the Capital One matchup. These statistics are significant, and can be useful in recruiting.

tOSU has the record for most BCS games - that's meaningful and I'd like to see that record extended.

8 - Ohio State
7 - Oklahoma
7 - USC (6 + vacated Title Game)
6 - Florida
6 - Florida State

tOSU can reach the record for most BCS game wins this year:

6 - USC (5 + vacated Title Game)
5 - tOSU
5 - Florida (can't qualify for a BCS game this year)
4 - LSU
3 - Texas
3 - Miami
