2009 TSUN News (football only discussion)

I like how you just say that like it's not a problem.

It is a problem but what can you do. Losing Rojo and Barksdale a few years ago really hurt. I thought Michigan had Nick Perry but he bailed for USC as well. RR needs to start building relationships in Michigan with highschools and coaches. I'm not the biggest fan of RR but I am behind him.

I didn't think Michigan needed to panic and go with a spread option. Find a Qb that is a great passer and scramble when things break down and run a few options....that's it. I honestly see Michigan winning 4-6 games next year. I think year 4 is where I "hope"they will get back to competing for big ten titles and bcs games. The question is will people be patient because I think Michigan will have another subpar year in 2009. Of course I hope I'm wrong.

Hmmm... interesting spin, but the decommitments weren't [just] because of the 3-9 season.

And how much of a *chance* do you think you guys have to end up in the top 7 or 8? And a follow-up to that... where do you think you'll actually rank once everything is said-and-done?

Sure they were from other reasons. Players wanting to stay close to home, other offers peaked their interest, and other reasons. No clue they could be from 5-15 depending on what happens down the stretch.

Maybe because a lot of your all-time best and most famous players are from Ohio, and because Ohio is one of the most talent-rich states in the entire country and is located adjacent to your state?
and 90% of recruiting is local...

Yeah like I said Michigan can get a few players from Ohio.
Will they put in the effort to get the guys who need convincing? Or will they just go to Florida where it's easier?
Carr had trouble securing talent in Michigan and people were ok with that. RR has trouble and people are all over him.
Balderdash. The boards were absolutely livid when Rojo got away, and again with Perry.
Check out 2007 Rivals.com Prospect Rankings

Have no clue what the deal is with that.
That year was much different than most, at least with regard to the poachers from far away.
I wonder how many of them watched his performance in the Army AA game. Maybe we should also point out to them that fellow Ohioan (and Buckeye commit) Jamie Wood is rated higher at safety (#2 nationally) than is Turner (#3) by Rivals.
That would serve as the umpteenth example of why Rivals' take on Ohio is generally garbage, imo.
IIRC, he did have an interception (albeit on an underthrown ball where the receiver had him beat) but got torched for a long TD.
He gave up about a half-dozen passes, only looking bad on 1. The game is severely slanted towards the O. The two missed tackles were bad, and certainly not erased by the INT thrown only to JT (it was an acrobatic catch but certainly not a sign of greatness).

In general, those who adore UM declare his performance as great, and those who hate them declare it as woeful. It was neither, by a longshot imo... boo boo's AA game was much closer to the latter. He will be a good one for them.

Dantonio certainly loves RR's attention down south, not only for Michigan, but the sleepers in Ohio as well. Kids like Johnny Adams, Nate Klatt, Greg Jones (before RR), Steve Gardiner.

Agreed. I'm not sure UM needed a shakeup on offense whatsoever, just some better playcalling. Personally, I think they targeted the wrong side of the ball to overhaul.

Michigan turns out a tremendous amount of NFL talent on defense. The problem is, much of that talent is underdeveloped until after they reach the league or right before (senior year). If they brought in a coach to finally begin realizing their potential, UM would be a force once again.

Smart, fundamental football is what UM has been missing, yet too many UM fans bought the obsession with Barwis. UM may be better conditioned, but Stevie Brown still blows coverages, Brandon Harrison comes flying in but whiffs or fills the wrong hole, and so forth.

I think there's a strong argument to made that UM has downgraded their defense with this hire.

Because he couldn't beat Ohio St. You should know that. You get hired at Michigan or Ohio State the number one objective is not to win big ten titles or national titles.....it's to beat UM/OSU.

I think you missed the point.

You were saying something about your current coach doing something that your previous coach was doing, and the previous coach was fired. I found it rather funny.

So if Michigan recruited the state better when Carr was the coach then he would have beat Ohio State?

If you say no then it doesn't matter about recruiting the state.

if he recruited Ohio better, yes I think he would have done better. Those players were key to Bo's 10 year war and the suffering OSU endured after that (vs Moeller/Carr too) was built around Ohioans as well. Zoltan was the best winged Ohioan in The Game for 2 straight years.

Cooper often had better national recruits and overall talent than UM, but lost to Michigan's squads.

So, did you read the post you quoted or not?

Again, I found it funny that you were not concerned about what I (and probably many others) consider a problem, and your fired coach and current coach both have it in common.

Not saying it would have directly resulted in better success, but it certainly wouldn't have hurt to not let your biggest rival get Vernon Gholston, for example.

EDIT: Vern was a beast btw.

I know Ohio is huge for Michigan when it comes to recruiting. Cooper didn't secure the talent like Tressel does. It really makes it difficult to get players to Michigan when Ohio State is on top right now and Michigan is rebuilding. I'm just saying Michigan doesn't need to put their whole focus level on Ohio right now. They have to go out and recruit the nation right now. When Michigan starts to win and competing for big ten titles I'm sure they can dip into Ohio and start competing with OSU for recruits. Then Michigan can put a lot more focus in Ohio. I stated eariler RR needs to focus on Michigan and build relationships with high schools. That is the first thing he needs to do. He needs to build relationships with coaches and high schools in Ohio around Toledo, Cincy, etc. He needs to try to get with Ginn Sr. Glenville is a pipeline with OSU as I'm sure you know and alot of great players come from there. I know I'll get laughed at because most of their recruits go to OSU. Marcus Hall is probably going to go to OSU but I'm glad to see Michigan putting the pressure on and try to flip him.
