Our top five recruits this year are from five different states, including the best from MI and OH.

The "best from Ohio"? You have three commits from Ohio (three of 20 from Ohio seems well below what you usually get from Ohio), and the only one who can be considered a top-flight player is Turner. Toussaint and Bell are OK.

Um, if Florida's not the point then how come you specifically mentioned Florida as a state where Michigan was doing well?

According to Rivals, Michigan always signs a top-15 class, and how much has that helped them recently? Perhaps Rivals might tend to overrate the Wolverine classes just a bit?

1-7 is just fine with us.

Yeah you are right Gallon just does well in practices and. He was invited to the army bowl and last year was the only junior to make 1st team all state in class 6a Florida. He is a nobody.

It's not like Michigan isn't trying to recruit their state. They offered the top guys in Michigan and they just wanted to play somewhere else. Michigan State has done an amazing job this year getting the kids to come play for them.

Ohio State pretty much owns Ohio so tell me why Michigan should waste their time in Ohio when they could go to Florida, Penn, Texas, etc? Sure Michigan can get a few players from Ohio but they need to focus other places.

Michigan had to recruit the nation this year, maybe they should just offer the 1 and 2 star players in Michigan and everybody would be satisfied.

The kid's best in-state offers were Central Florida and Florida International....

Charles Woodson, Desmond Howard, Curtis Enis are pretty good reasons, Kevin Koger and Justin Turner as well. RR's efforts in PA have been very minor, and Texas owns Texas. That leaves Florida.

The SEC schools and style pretty much own Bama, LA, Miss, Ark yet RR spends considerable time there. If Dequinta gets away too, one might wonder whether the devotion to that region is as valuable as it seems.

Maybe because a lot of your all-time best and most famous players are from Ohio, and because Ohio is one of the most talent-rich states in the entire country and is located adjacent to your state?

that might have been the case in the past, but now Ohio doesn't have nearly enough slot receivers to satisfy Dick Rod's recruiting needs

Yeah like I said Michigan can get a few players from Ohio. Texas,Florida, and California are the three biggest states in terms of recruiting. You say the longhorns own Texas. Check out Oklahoma's roster. Texas and Florida have so much talent that there is enough to go around. Even Ohio State goes to Florida and gets some good players.

Carr had trouble securing talent in Michigan and people were ok with that. RR has trouble and people are all over him.

Check out 2007 Rivals.com Prospect Rankings

Have no clue what the deal is with that.

Plus Ohio State has done well the past few years. I rememebr Toledo being even as far as Michigan and Ohio State fans. Now you don't see many Michigan fans. Michigan needs to start winning again and beating Ohio State if they want to get more players from Ohio.

...Michigan currently has the #8 recruiting class according to rivals despite all the decommitments and the 3-9 season. They also have a chance to move up pending on some big recruits. It seems to me they are doing fine.

Hmmm... interesting spin, but the decommitments weren't [just] because of the 3-9 season.

And how much of a *chance* do you think you guys have to end up in the top 7 or 8? And a follow-up to that... where do you think you'll actually rank once everything is said-and-done?

They think Turner is the best player in Ohio.

I wonder how many of them watched his performance in the Army AA game. Maybe we should also point out to them that fellow Ohioan (and Buckeye commit) Jamie Wood is rated higher at safety (#2 nationally) than is Turner (#3) by Rivals.

Curious what our um visitors think about the potential Robinson hire. Seems like a pretty good move to me. He won 2 SB rings as Denver's DC in the 90's amd has a decent resume in that position. Question is will he gel with the assistants DickRod already has in place, and can DickRod keep from meddling in his buisness and give him the control he needs over the defense.

And it is a pretty good move. He's a safe pick, and its one that I like. Everybody touts the 10-37 record at Syracuse, but he's had 10 years of defensive coordinator experience throughout college and the NFL, and two super bowl rings (cue up the defensive version of Weis comparisons). Does that make him great? No, but he'd good enough for the job here.

Will he be a great recruiter? That is undecided at the time, and probably will be a resounding no. But what he provides you is a good Xs and Os coach who can develop players and help teach them fundamentals, something UM has been lacking.

Confirmed offers:

5 ohioans, 3 verbals. They backed off Freeman, Edwards & Hunter, and all three look like the right moves.
8 michiganders, 4 verbals.
-------------------------
13 offers, 7 verbals

Dixie-land:

3 bama, 0 verbals.
1 ark, 0 verbals.
4 miss, 0 verbals.
8 bayou, 1 verbal that isn't likely to stick.
4 georgia, 0 verbals.
--------------------
20 offers, 1 verbal (maybe 0)

Two biggest talent pools:

5 texas, 3 verbals, 3 decommitments.
- Beaver: Only major school to offer QB, eventually stayed closer to home.
- Fera: committed but his heart was with PSU.
- Peace: Dad couldn't keep him at UM, will be staying closer to home.

21 florida, 6 verbals.

- Gibbons, only offer
- Hawthorne - beat out Louisville, Tenn
- Emilien - beat out USF, Wisky... OSU has a major asterisk
- Gallon - beat out FAU, UCF & Iowa
- Jones - beat out Aub, USF
- Smith - beat out Wisky, Tenn

Lost: Nukeese (UF), Carter (ILL), Berry (OSU), Eugene Smith (WVU), Hadley (UNC), Robinson (UCF), Jackson (UNC), Gillislee (UF)
Trailing: Denard (UF), Haulstead (FSU),

I understand recruiting florida. I don't understand the focus on 'SEC country' as highlighted above. That's a brutal area for any outsider, and it has panned out as such.

It was even tougher sledding for RR in Florida, there were just more guys to target that the big boys didn't chase. I think he's found some good players in this class and will continue to do so, but Florida has not proven much easier than the midwest at this point, there are just more tweener sleepers to be found there.
