2009 TSUN News (football only discussion)

Man, this is really bittersweet. Happy for Vlad (especially coming off a big injury), but he could have played here. More importantly, letting him sign with UM directly fixed their biggest problem for years - talent at safety.

Lots of info should be out tomorrow. Looks like a variation of the 3-3-5 will be used, with one of the LBs a hybrid guy called a "spinner", something DC Robinson has used at previous stops.

Article from Scout:
Scout.com: News Roundup - Pete Carroll on Sanchez 4/2
Rich Rodriguez is hosting his annual Michigan football coaches clinic, and a massive crowd of over 600 is expected. UM director of football operations Brad Labadie attributed the high turnout to Rodriguez's spread offense innovation: "The major thing is Rich's offense is very intriguing to many high school coaches who want to come and learn from Rich and his staff. You see more guys in high school running spread-type offenses." Yeah, and if Rich Rod doesn't win this year, pretty soon he'll be one of them.

Go Blue Michigan Wolverine

Long breakdown 1 of 2 from Thursday's UM practice. Tate struggled (including seeing over line), TE is the strength of team, attitude much better this year.

Lots of good info, though the 3-3-5 or 3-2-5+spinner info coming in the next blog is more intriguing. That should be out around lunch time or so.

:slappy: Midget.

Good thing TE is such a huge part of their offense. I thought we read the attitude was great last year despite the whole Boren saga?

God, I cannot wait to play these turds.

According to the Beav, they are apparently up to 102 offers now...that's right, 102. That scUM offer sure doesn't mean what it used to.

Tate Forcier talks about adjusting to college, some hints on new Wolverines defense and more - Michigan Wolverines Football: News, Blogs, Photos, Audio & Video - MLive.com

On the field, Forcier, who is expected to compete with Nick Sheridan for the starting QB job, said one of the biggest challenges is adjusting to the snap, which he's had some trouble hanging onto during spring practices.

"It's just getting comfortable with how they snap it to you," he said. "In high school, you get these slow shotgun snaps. Here, these come back like rockets."

What? Seriously? The guy can't see over the line and struggles with taking the snap. It's like they signed a 5 year old to play quarterback. Next he'll complain that RR keeps taking his crayons.

* - Mike Martin has a short term injury. Campbell has a ways to go to contribute.

** - SP = "Spinner", a position used by new DC Greg Robinson. Syracuse blurb on position. The Oklahoma description is better (though he didn't coach there).
MIAMI — The kid was big and fast and talented. And that was part of his problem. At various times in high school, Dan Cody played free safety and defensive end. Fullback and tight end. He was quarterback too. So no one knew quite what to do with him, least of all college recruiters. Only a few came calling."I felt like I had the ability to play," he says. "I just didn't know where it was going to be."

The short answer: Oklahoma.

The Sooners gambled on Cody and found a way to make use of his many facets. As the designated "spinner" on defense, the 6-foot-5, 270-pound senior moves around before the snap, sliding inside or out, getting down in a three-point stance or backing off to a linebacker position. This freedom has helped make him an All-American and a player that top-ranked USC must reckon with in Tuesday's national championship game at the Orange Bowl. But defensive schemes tell only a small part of Cody's story. Before he could become a star on the field, he had a more personal battle to fight, finding a place to belong. "I've seen so much … not just in football but in life," he says. "You learn about yourself, about your heart."
This season, Cody has returned the favor, helping the Sooners in their time of need. Defensive tackle Tommie Harris left school early for the NFL and Dusty Dvoracek, another tackle, was dismissed in September for disciplinary reasons. Oklahoma needed a new star on the line. Stoops began tinkering with Cody at the "spinner" position in fall practice. Jevon Kearse was used in a similar way when Stoops was the defensive coordinator at Florida in the late 1990s. The Sooners unleashed Cody in this role against Texas in October. Used mainly in passing situations, it allows him to blitz from the edge, drop back in pass coverage or even line up at tackle. "We've been able to create a lot of mismatches and get Dan isolated," Venables says. The USC coaches say they aren't too worried about Cody moving around before the snap. Of greater concern is what happens after the play begins."He's fast and he does a good job in their scheme," offensive line coach Tim Davis says. "It'll be a test for us."

We played a three-man line the whole practice. Here is the deal with the defense: they have it arranged so the best athletes are on the field, but if they had to, they could always put in an extra defensive lineman at any time -- it seems like a variation of a 3-3-5. In a way, it is almost like a 3-1-2-5. Herron rushes the passer a lot.
