Mywan Jackson chooses UNC over Michigan & Louisville.

Butch Davis kept Jackson, Williams, Tate, Boyd, & Hunter away from RR.
Boyd and Hunter are from NC, and Tate, being as big a baseball star as he is, would have been absolutely batshit to go north of the Mason-Dixon line to play. UNC has a hell of a baseball program.

Jim Hermann's name is being tossed around as a viable DC candidate. Stadium & Main thread here

He was loathed by UM fans for his defense's inability to handle the spread. Ron English was going to be the savior, but that honeymoon ended quickly. Then Barwis was going to change things, but still UM struggles badly with basic fundamentals against explosive offenses (especially "spread" variations).

He went back to the NFL after UM, and he's is viewed as a smart defensive mind, perhaps too much so (overly complex) for the michigan defenders. Working with Kris Jenkins & Jonathan Vilma is a bit different than Ernest Shazor & Shawn Crable.

Excellent summation of the domer-like delusional sequence the scUM fans have been on since about 2004. The two fan bases have essentially just morphed into the same creature imo.

UM "verbal" DeQuinta Jones is visiting UM this weekend. Enjoyed his Ark visit. Feels so-so about his UM commitment, and while committed he didn't sound very convinced. Contemplating Ole Miss or Miss St visit in two weeks.

Friday's forecast in AA: a high of 9, low of 0. It should be about 5 degrees warmer on Saturday.

Uh-oh. What's the record for most decommits from one class?

Academics Questioned at Michigan - The Quad Blog - NYTimes.com
January 14, 2009, 6:12 pm Academics Questioned at Michigan

By Pete Thamel In the convoluted world of college athletics and education, sometimes it takes a while for academics to acknowledge what appears to be obvious. That’s what happened at the University of Michigan, where The Ann Arbor News ran a series of articles last March with evidence that 251 athletes took independent study classes between 2004 and 2007 with the same professor and their grades were radically higher than in their regular classes. The series made it obvious that many of these athletes were steered to the professor, John Hagen, to help keep their eligibility. (Michigan, of course, denied this, kicking and screaming.)

The articles offered a rare peek behind the eligibility shell game played at so many colleges, as football stars like Gabe Watson played four years yet somehow fell 35 credits short of graduation. It also detailed how the kinesiology major is used as an avenue to admit student-athletes, who then transfer out before the difficult classes required of the degree. Many jumped to general studies, a major nearly half-filled with athletes, who make up 3 percent of the university student body.
?”Remove the management of the academic counselors in the Academic Success Program from the Athletic Department, transferring it to the dean’s office in the College of LS&A (Literature, Science and the Arts).”

?”Stiffen the oversight of the general studies degree in the College of LS&A by requiring the college’s academic advisers to make students come up with an individualized course of study.”

?”Remove the task of hearing appeals of student athletes who wish to stay academically eligible to participate in sports from the Committee on Academic Performance.”
Nothing really shocking here (as most schools "guide" their players through school), but it does legitimize what Harbaugh claimed (for which he was declared a traitorous tall tale teller).

Tyrone Wheatley among assistant football coaches added to Ron English's staff at Eastern Michigan

by Kevin Ryan | The Ann Arbor News Thursday January 15, 2009, 2:08 PM

Eastern Michigan University's new football coaching staff, led by Ron English, has a notable University of Michigan flavor to it.
English, the former Wolverines defensive coordinator who was introduced as the Eagles' latest head coach on Dec. 22, announced the hiring of his final seven assistant coaches on Thursday, and three of them have ties to the Wolverines: Tyrone Wheatley, Kurt Anderson and Tom Burpee.
Noteworthy as a star player and a name tossed around as a potential future UM staffer...

What I think is going to happen here is, Wheatley will get some coaching experience while he's there, and get in good with lots of HS head coaches in and around Michigan. Then when Freddy Jack decides to retire (I'm thinking after Jeremy graduates from UM) he can step right in the RB position coach at UM.

I'm looking forward to a mike hart vs mike vrabel recruiting battle someday. Spielman would be better, but I'm not sure he's tressel material. :p
