2009 TSUN News (football only discussion)

I'd love to hear Tressel's reaction if the marketing department tried to get him to twitter.
He sure does like exclamation points!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
 reminds me of my over-50 relatives who have discovered email & the internets, except they never grow out of that communication style.

LaLota struggled in San Antonio, display sub-par athleticism to be a true DL as he wished. Many still felt his best future was at OL (his original projection on recruiting sites). I really can't see the LB move.

Moving Brown to LB is interesting. One, there have been many UM safeties who should have been playing linebacker. Shazor, Gold, June... will Brown become the next. He would bring a sharp upgrade in speed, but unless his instincts, tackling & pursuit improves, I'm not sure this is a good move. That would also mean two new starters at safety and both very young.

They are also tinkering with a few undersized LBs as hybrid DEs. Oklahoma used this position for Dan Cody, however he was considerably larger
Hypericum Buyers Club
The Sooners gambled on Cody and found a way to make use of his many facets. As the designated "spinner" on defense, the 6-foot-5, 270-pound senior moves around before the snap, sliding inside or out, getting down in a three-point stance or backing off to a linebacker position. This freedom has helped make him an All-American and a player that top-ranked USC must reckon with in Tuesday's national championship game at the Orange Bowl. But defensive schemes tell only a small part of Cody's story. Before he could become a star on the field, he had a more personal battle to fight, finding a place to belong. "I've seen so much … not just in football but in life," he says. "You learn about yourself, about your heart."
This season, Cody has returned the favor, helping the Sooners in their time of need. Defensive tackle Tommie Harris left school early for the NFL and Dusty Dvoracek, another tackle, was dismissed in September for disciplinary reasons. Oklahoma needed a new star on the line. Stoops began tinkering with Cody at the "spinner" position in fall practice. Jevon Kearse was used in a similar way when Stoops was the defensive coordinator at Florida in the late 1990s. The Sooners unleashed Cody in this role against Texas in October. Used mainly in passing situations, it allows him to blitz from the edge, drop back in pass coverage or even line up at tackle. "We've been able to create a lot of mismatches and get Dan isolated," Venables says. The USC coaches say they aren't too worried about Cody moving around before the snap. Of greater concern is what happens after the play begins."He's fast and he does a good job in their scheme," offensive line coach Tim Davis says. "It'll be a test for us."
from last season:
Beal's play is a moving experience for Oklahoma | College Sports News | Sports News | News for Dallas, Texas | Dallas Morning News
Beal initially struggled but has developed into one of OU's top pass rushers. His size (6-3, 253) and quick first step, combined with his knowledge for playing linebacker and end, has allowed him to take on a new challenge.

Beal has become the latest in a line of OU standouts to play a hybrid position. The scheme he'll use today against No. 5 Texas allows him to line up as an end on some plays while he can roam around as a pass-rushing linebacker on others.

"I like it a lot," Beal said. "It kind of takes me back to my linebacker days in high school. I, basically, have free range and play a little pass coverage sometimes. It's like outside linebacker slash defensive end in like a 3-4. It gives me a lot of versatility."

In OU's defense, Beal's position is called a "flex" player. It was formerly called a "spinner."

The first Oklahoma player used in the scheme was Dan Cody, a 2005 NFL second-round draft pick. Coach Bob Stoops originally installed the position when he was defensive coordinator at Florida, first using Jevon Kearse in the havoc-wreaking role.

Defensive end Auston English, the Big 12 preseason defensive player of the year, used the "flex" position last year to lead the conference with 9 ? sacks and record a team-high 13 tackles for loss.
RR's staff reportedly met to swap notes on their spread offenses, perhaps the defensive principles were discussed as well.

MGoBlue: Football Showcases Program with Night of Champions
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Wolverine football program hosted the second annual Night of Champions, a nine-event Olympic style competition, tonight (Friday, March 13) on the eve of spring drills at Oosterbaan Fieldhouse. The team-building competition that ran throughout winter conditioning was won by the squad led by defensive line coach Bruce Tall. Tall’s team collected 65 points to edge out second-place finisher Team Dews (61) and third-place squad Team Magee (59).

“Tonight’s event is a great way for prospects and their families to interact with our coaches, their families and watch our players compete,” said head coach Rich Rodriguez. “We are extremely pleased with the turnout and to see the interest double in just one year is extremely encouraging. Our players are great ambassadors and this is a great way to show the family atmosphere that we have at Michigan and the fun and competitive environment that exists within our program.”

Team Tall won the Team Relay and Tug of War event and finished second in the Plyo Box Jump, Dizzy Bat run and sled drive to claim the title. It was a tight competition heading into the final night of action. Team Dews led a logjam of four teams that were two points behind heading into tonight’s competition.

Anyone buying that 180 lb listed weight for Tate Forcier?

What do you think of this offense?
I love it. I love it! It's gonna take the big ten to another level! It's gonna be fun, it's gonna be a lot of fun
what is it about it that you love?
It's so fast, it's like a fast break in basketball, it's just non-stop. It's just so much speed to it.

Yeah, all that speed got them far last year. No doubt they will be better this year (one would have to think), maybe even respectable by the time THE GAME rolls around, but what the fuck are they gonna have for defense? Robinson better be a miracle worker or else they're gonna have to hope their offense can keep pace with the yards and points the defense is going to allow. Their safeties still suck (Turner may help) and Warren regressed last year (they retained their DB coach, right?). Bootycar has to be a step up from Morgan :slappy: Trent, but that's a lot of question marks.

It is bewildering why DickRod feels the need to accumulate so many clones on offense. Maybe he plans on shifting a number of them to DB, but wouldn't he just be better off recruiting real DBs? What about LBs? The DL, aside from Martin and Graham, is very much an unknown quantity. The OL showed growth as the season went on, but they still have a ways to go. Can Minor finally shake the injury bug? What happens if/when Tater-Tot gets dinged up? All they have is nick Sheridan (maybe the worst QB in the history of the rivalry) and two other raw prospects in D. Robinson and Feagin (unless he really becomes a slot). It could get ugly early again up there.

Gibson the secondary coach is still there, but the main problem was that Warren didnt like shafer. Of all of our returning defensive players he might have been the happiest to see him go not to mention he was hurt half the year. It still doesnt make up for the fact that he basically quit on the season after the PSU game.
