What's wrong with getting 3 good players. Those 3 aren't scrubs you know. I agree they need to focus on defense more but it's still early. It's only Feb. and I'm sure they will get some lbs this year. They don't need to get in panic mode especially when signing day is in FEB.

Nothing wrong with any of your recruits. Any or all of them could turn out to be good college players. I was just pointing out how ironic it is that the one place on your roster where you have depth you have grabbed 3 more very early. JWINS pointed out earlier in the thread that you have somewhere around 28 players at the "skilled" positions on your roster. With 3 recievers in the fold and 5-6 QB offers out there these numbers will skew even farther. Maybe Um will only take 1 RB this year? I haven't studied the Mich. offer list. Perhaps RR has 5 dt offers,5 corners, and every decent LB east of the rockies offered already, and it is just coincidence that you have only added to the offensive side of the ball. With all the slot dot activity over the last 2 years classes, my guess is that this is an area that RR likes to recruit. Perhaps defense is a necessary evil. OSU has at times in the Tressel era seemed to overload at safety and lb. Most here think intentionally. It is nice to have a bunch of your best athletes and tackling machines covering punts and kickoffs. Depth in the db's and lb's allows for this. It could get very interesting if some of your minature recievers are forced to cover kicks next year.

UM is at a minumum 1-2 seasons away from outscoring anybody, given your QB situation. My opinion remains that if you don't skew a couple of recruiting classes toward the defensive side of the ball in short order, that you may not be able to get that hot-to trot offense on the field if someday you actually do have one.

Wolverines sift through Ohio for talent

BY JOSH HELMHOLDT ? FREE PRESS SPECIAL WRITER ? February 25, 2009

Traditionally, Michigan?s recruiting plan begins with in-state players, then targeting the state of Ohio?s top talent. No other state, besides Michigan, has produced more Wolverines than the Buckeye State and two of U-M?s three Heisman Trophy winners are from there.

Ohio has long been considered one of the top football talent producing states in the country, but the last couple years have seen a drop off in the talent. That changes in the class of 2010. Ohio?s talent pool is once again deep.

Ten Ohioans have scholarship offers from U-M, including Canton South wide receiver Jerald Robinson (6-foot-2, 175 pounds). On Feb. 9, he was the Wolverines? third verbal commitment of the 2010 class. Two of the other nine prospects with Michigan offers have made commitments elsewhere. Lakota West?s Alex Smith said he wants to go to Cincinnati and Youngstown Ursuline?s Jamel Turner has pledged to Ohio State.

Columbus Brookhaven defensive end Derrick Bryant (6-4, 230) got an offer from Michigan last fall and lists the Wolverines as his favorite school. Michigan also has a good shot with Youngstown Liberty linebacker Antonio Kinard (6-4, 210), whom they offered shortly after Signing Day. Michigan signed two players from Liberty in the class of 2009.

Other Ohio junior prospects with Michigan offers are Lakewood St. Edward safety Latwan Anderson (5-11, 185), Solon defensive end Darryl Baldwin (6-6, 250), Lakota West linebacker Jordan Hicks (6-2, 210 pounds) and Cincinnati St. Xavier offensive tackle Matt James (6-8, 280). Meanwhile, Cleveland St. Ignatius linebacker Scott McVey is leaning heavily towards Ohio State.

February is early in the recruiting process for next year and several more Ohio prospects will likely be offered in the coming months. A few to watch are Cincinnati Princeton athlete Spencer Ware (5-11, 230), Whitehouse Anthony Wayne offensive tackle Andrew Donnal (6-7, 265) and Johnstown Monroe offensive tackle Skyler Schofner (6-6, 276).

Of the three UM offers who have committed, only one had an OSU offer, and he commited to us:

Jerald Robinson (Michigan) (no OSU offer)
Alex Smith (Cincinnati) (no OSU offer)
Jamel Turner (Ohio State)

Of the seven remaining UM offers, three do not have OSU offers:

Derrick Bryant (no OSU offer)
Antonio Kinard (no OSU offer)
Latwan Anderson (no OSU offer)

Darryl Baldwin (OSU offer)
Jordan Hicks (OSU offer)
Matt James (OSU offer)
Scott McVey (OSU offer)

So if Michigan happens to get any or all three of Anderson, Bryant, and Kinard, it won't be because they "stole" them from Ohio State...unless we do end up offering Anderson, in which case I doubt he commits to UM.

and of the four that do have OSU offers, Hicks is probably looking at OSU or heading south, James is probably OSU or Notre Dame, and I have a hard time seeing McVey not ending up in scarlet and gray

I don't know much about Baldwin, but it doesn't look like Michigan is going to be 'stealing' any Ohio talent from us this year, at least not so far

Miami lifelong favorite, but UM is #2. Distance not a factor. Wants to decide at state championship (Dec 20).
Unless this is based on off-the-record stuff, he absolutely beamed when talking about Miami, far more than Mich. Still sounds like Miami is the prohibitive favorite here.

He also hails from Miami Central, which will make him tough to steal from Da U.
Seeing as the interviews were taken and published at the same time, and both were Michigan sites, it seems like someone is playing the recruiting game here.
