Birk's Eye View: Thursday practice notes from University of Michigan football practice - AnnArbor.com
Nick Sheridan was first in the quarterback rotation during Thursday’s installation period, and he and Tate Forcier continued to work with the No. 1 running backs during individual, while Denard Robinson and David Cone practiced with the second group.
I’ll get some video up later, but Robinson was a little crisper with his passes Thursday then when I watched him last week. Accuracy is still an issue - and when I talk accuracy, I mean putting the ball in a spot where a receiver can run with it, not just completion percentage - so if he plays this year Michigan could look an awful lot like some of Rodriguez’s old West Virginia teams.
• “There has been a few more explosive plays offensively” in camp this year than last, Rodriguez said. “I think part of it is due to the guys maybe executing a little bit better, but I think part of it is due to some of the skill set of some of the guys doing it.” Besides the quarterbacks, Rodriguez singled out slot receiver Kelvin Grady as one of camp’s biggest playmakers.
• Michigan’s first full-scale scrimmage is Saturday, but the Wolverines continue to practice live, usually in controlled situations, four or five periods a day. "I'd like to go a half hour, 45 minutes, but I don't want to beat ourselves up," Rodriguez said. "I think we need to do that to improve our fundamentals."

From reading the practice reports and seeing the general progressions from last year(including personnel changes/losses), I'm figuring a Michigan offense that is a little better than last year and a Michigan defense that is worse than last year. I don't think(even in my wildest fantasies) we'll see 3-9 again this year, but I think we're going to see a few games where the laughs will be plentiful.

They'll finally be starting legitimate running backs instead of a needed to redshirt slot WR who executed poorly and took on tacklers even moreso.

Tate seems capable of completing simple passes into the flats and to open WRs, something Threet & Sheridan struggled mightily with. They also have someone capable of completing passes in practice, so WRs will actually get meaningful reps there.

Tate Forcier, Martavious Odoms, Jeremy Gallon and others are agile but not very physical as runners. Brandon Minor is, but he is not rumbling downhill like the offense UM will face against Notre Dame, Michigan State, Iowa, Wisconsin, Ohio State. Their struggles to stop UM's running game do not bode well for more physical rushing attacks.

Denard Robinson is an explosive player. He could unseat Tate or at least steal a large dose of snaps. What happens if Tate goes down and the offense shifts to a rushing attack? The WR depth chart is already slanted heavily based on blocking ability. Last year certain WRs (Stonum, Mathews) did not have the best attitude at the position, in part because their duties were largely to block for the RBs & slots. Now a more competent passer in Forcier should help, but if UM reverts to a Denard-heavy rushing attack, whether via Tate-injury or choice, do those attitude problems creep up again?

I say 6-6 for Michigan this year. Maybe 7-5 if they get halfway decent QB play. To be honest I was more impressed with Robinson as a prospect then I was with Forcier. Either way they have to be better than last year? I mean it cant get much worse, right? lol

I will say that I think UM fans will think that Forcier or Robinson will have a season like Pat White had as a freshman for Rich Rod, but I really doubt that.

Surprised nobody has commented - but with the Talbotts UM now has more commits from the state of Ohio than OSU.

JT better get busy on that fence - or do we want to keep it as it is, with a gate for the kids we don't offer?

Let UM get the players that JT doesnt want. I trust JT's talent evaluation. Michigan is getting solid players for sure, but I don't think were at the point where they are stealing OSU's top prospects. If they get the top players from Ohio that we go hard off of then we have a problem, but I dont see that hppening anytime soon. Though I am interested to see how this class will shape up

The only thing I'd like to see JT be able to improve is recruiting at DT. I'd love to see us pull a miracle and get Shariff.

.If they lose to WMU, it will be for opposite reasons from that game...

I know what you are saying and you are a lot more familiar with the scUM players than I am but I just can't see them winning a shootout with anyone. If Tater Tot really can't separate himself from Sheridan it really makes me wonder. If scUM wins I think it will be because the defense can pressure the WMU QB better than expected.

Regardless, the very fact we are having serious discussions about WMU beating scUM is good enough for me.
