As a general rule very little can be taken from fall practice in regards to how good a team will be. Good offensive performance may simply mean weak D, and vice versa.

I generally would agree with this statement...

I know what a turd looks like without stepping in it. The UM Defense is a pile of shit right now. No amount of polishing is going to change that fact this year. Only time and talent, and that is going to take a while.

I don't think there is any way to know how good the UM offense is untill they play an actual D1 quality defense. They sure aren't seeing one in practice.

Anybody who thinks UM can't recruit the very best at quarterback needs to read this article:

Their list of top new quarterbacks for 2009 includes:

#25 Shavodrick Beaver
#12 Kevin Newsome
#2 Ryan Mallett

No, I don't see any mention of 4ca. But for nuts sake, there are three kids on that list who committed to Michigan. What more can you ask of a team?

#25 Shavodrick Beaver - over-bearing parental influence - probably would have transferred anyways
#12 Kevin Newsome - scared of competition
#2 Ryan Mallett - big jerkface poo-poo head - don't want his kind on the team

I would think it would be particularly difficult to judge a team like UM. With an offense that nobody else in the conference uses there is little basis to judge how the D would perform against a more traditional O. In that same regard, practicing against an offense that nobody else is using may not be the most effective way to prepare a team to face more traditional offenses.

?????
I don't grok that.
They (and nobody else, either) prepares for another team by practicing against their own offense.

And yeah, you sure as heck can tell what you've got by evaluating fall practices. If you're looking at stats and unit "effectiveness" vs another unit, then you're looking at the wrong things.

Mallett, Newsome, and Beaver are now all strangers in a strange land.

if anything, couldn't you argue that running a non-traditional offense as michigan now attempts to may make it harder to field a quality scout team to prepare your own defense week in and week out.

That's the thing...the offense is supposed to be so revolutionary that your opponent better worry about scouting to play you; not vice-versa. But if RR's team has to react and adapt to what their opponents are doing, they are S.O.L. They are used to people trying to figure out how to stop them, not the other way around. Now they are being stopped by simply flooding more talented players against their scheme. If RR has to make adjustments, it aint gonna happen and he'll have his lunch pail handed to him with a pink slip in a few years.

Coach hopes misery ends for Michigan

Larry Lage
Associated Press
Associated Press
ANN ARBOR, Mich. ? Rich Rodriguez refuses to make specific predictions about his second season at Michigan, saying his goals always include contending for a conference championship and beating rivals.
What about qualifying for a bowl game?
?If we?re not practicing or playing during the holidays, everybody will be miserable,? Rodriguez said.
The Wolverines went 3-9 last season, including a dismal 2-6 in the Big Ten. But they would seem to have a shot at qualifying for the postseason because they have a weak schedule, they?ve survived the culture shock of going from Lloyd Carr to Rodriguez, and there is hope on both sides of the ball.
While a lot has to go well for Michigan to turn things around, it is difficult to envision a repeat of last year.
College football?s winningest team lost a school-record nine games, including one to a Mid-American Conference team for a program-worst five at home. It was Michigan?s first losing season since 1967 ? the late Bo Schembechler was still coaching at Miami of Ohio ? and its first without a bowl in 34 years.
