It's not old and tired...it's a reality of DRod's offense and how it translates to the NFL. DRod can recruit as many scat-backs and mobile QB's he wants, but it will be hard to find legit wide-outs and offensive lineman that want to play in that system. If college football is designed to prepare you for the NFL, Michigan's system is NOT ideal.
Steve Slaton is a bad example becuase he's a running back. That's a position DRod should be able to recruit well because its a cornerstone of his system. The fact that a Rimington Award winner can't make an NFL roster is a bit telling...
Its one thing to recruit under the radar guys for his system in a watered down Big East, and another to recruit on the national level with the big boys. Elite prospects who are assuming they will someday be playing on Sunday, aren't going to spend 4 years under DRod in a system that doesn't develop them for pro-football. I said that from Day 1. When Lloyd left, out went a pro-style offense and tons of NFL draft picks. DRod comes in, installs a new, innovative offense, but a system that won't attract elite level recruits in multiple positions.
Case and point.....Terrelle Pryor. Wanted to learn how to become a true QB, and thought OSU was the better choice than DRod's system spread. Gardner is a great propect, and good fit for the system, but it will be interesting to see how he develops as a QB. I will be shocked if UM ever lands elite level o-line recruits or wide-receivers. I'm semi-surprised so many slots have committed.
