2009 tOSU Running Backs discussion (official thread)

yeah I hate to have to agree with Taos on anything ( ) but I think he's earned a couple of more carries, especially if Tressel wants to try something new and different in the red zone.

I was thinking the same thing. He could be very valuable in the red zone, especially near the goal line where we have had some difficulties at times this season.

The 2010 tOSU Running Backs discussion (official thread) will be quite interesting. :wink2:

Man, no kidding. If Carlos Hyde is able to qualify and Roderick Smith and Corey Brown stick to their commitments (which I expect they will), we'll have eight RBs on scholarship (Saine, Herron, Hall, Berry, Martin, Hyde, Smith, and Brown), plus two at fullback (Boren and Homan). Sheesh...

Since we likely have Jordan Hall & Jermil Martin as our No.1 & No.2 RBs for the game against NM state, I thought that I should post a couple of plays highlighting both of them. I am excited to see what these guys can do when they have a lot more carries....

A quick move by Jordan to bounce to the outside and turn on the jets....

....and we all remember this play by Jermil Martin, with Bryant Browning pulling and helping with an important block to open a big hole for Jermil to truck through.....Jermil is deceptively quick for a guy his size.....check it out.....

From last I heard, Corey Brown is going to play WR for us. But thats still a ridiculous wealth of RBs! And don't forget that Erick Howard could earn a late schollie too! That's absolutely scary depth
BTW, does anyone think that with the depth at TB that Martin stays there or moves back to FB?

Personally, if that situation arose I would like to see Jermil back at FB. When was the last time we used the FB to run the football? It would add a new dimension to the offense. I like Zach Boren, and Adam Homan has come along too at FB, but I don't think that JT would trust them running the football. Zach has shown that he has good hands catching the ball coming out of the backfield.....however, I would really like to see the FB run the ball too.

I really don't think we'll see a FB tote the rock that much with a stable of RBs going 7, possibly 8 deep. Regardless of his talents, maybe the FB may catch a pass in the flats but I don't see him getting many carries. FB is like a TE in our offense, just another blocker. And I'm sure most of us would be content with that, as long as our stable of RBs produces. But I see several guys almost having to redshirt next year

Ohio State's tailbacks

Freshman Jordan Hall ran for 90 yards on 10 carries. He popped through some holes. He took it to New Mexico State. Nothing is going to change. Asked if Brandon Saine and Dan Herron are the top two backs when healthy, OSU offensive coordinator Jim Bollman said, "Yep." Asked if Hall was pushing to change that, Bollman said, "Nope."

"It's nice to have those guys," Bollman said. "But the two guys who are the best at all the different things are the two older gentlemen in the crew."

Saine looked off his game, rushing seven times for 13 yards, though he scored his first touchdown of the year. Herron was back for his first meaningful action in a month, with his injured ankle in a brace and wrapped, and he ran for 68 yards on six carries in limited action, popping a 53-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Since they will carry the load, both older gentlemen need to do more next week against Penn State.

Just from a standpoint of who has done more with their carries consistently, I would rank our backs in this order:
1. Hall
2. Saine
3. Martin
4. Herron

- Honestly I just think Herron hasn't shown much this season. He was impressive last season but I just think he hasn't looked the same this year. He had the nice TD run on Saturday but before that, I believe his YPC average was 2.9 yards. Saine has some flashes but sometimes I think he looks a little tentative. I just wouldn't mind seeing Hall and Martin see some meaningful carries the next 3 weeks. Both just seem decisive and hit the hole with authority.

I think we can all agree that Herron is better than what he has shown us. I'm wondering if he has been having those nagging injuries that often plague RB's and adversely affect their performance over a season.
