2009 tOSU Offensive Line Discussion (official thread)

Clarette and Wells made our O-line look better then they were. Remember the year after Clarette left OSU? Wells and Ross had games with negative rushing yards.
Firstly, your spelling of Clarett made me laugh. Way to make him sound manly...

Secondly, I think you are confusing the years. Wells didn't play after 2002. We got by in 2003. 2004 was the worst year. Pitt's freshman year as well. Mo Wells enrolled in 2005, Beanie enrolled in 2006. I think, Ross' last year was 2004.

Some good discussion on the past couple of pages.

Our O has issues, and we know it's not the current players since we have been talking about these issues since before most of them came to OSU.

Tress needs to do something about the O. Fix "it." Whatever "it" may be.

Bring back that swagger we had, which we seem to have lost in the Florida game. Be ruthless and bitchslap opponents left and right a la Urban Meyer and Pete Carrol.

Do it, Tress! :osu:

Yeah I should have said Ross and Hall. We got by as in we had a good record...but our rushing was horrible. 2004 was horrible. Last year was very bad whenever Wells was not in the game.

We rarely meet our goals on offense. 250yrds passing and 200 rushing. I think JT may want to rethink those goals.....lol. 350yards against Navy will not cut it next week against a top 10 national defense. I hope we make a big jump in week one to week two. I have my doubts and just wish we had a heisman qb every year to run the O, it seems that we just can`t find anything consistent on O and the Oline still has issues with their consistency, push and timing. God may need to be on our side next week. I was impressed with the throws and catches by the TE`s....and I give kudos to the staff and TP for using them....finally. Props to them. We have lots of work to due to not get beat up by usc. Go Bucks

This isn't Michigan.

I understand that.....but usc just hung up 620 yards on San Jose State and held them to 120 net yards for the game. If we had just done that to Navy then I would feel much better about our team. We have our hands full next week. I know SJS isn`t the team that Navy is but they are not a total pushover either. I am just disappointed that we can`t seem to put 4 good quarters of offense together. Its very difficult for me to understand with the talent we have been bringing in. Other than Florida and USC we are recruiting as well as anyone in the nation.

When will we see 620 yards? Why not? Because we have a conservative coach doesn`t make sense to me. I have said it many times 2002 and all the close games will not be duplicated by us again. We have to get much better on offense....its very frustrating for a hardcore fan to see us look the same year after year after year. We just don`t have the execution or the right mindset on offense. Go Bucks

You've posted this almost word-for-word before. Other people already went over it with you so I won't waste my time.

FYI, Navy is a much better program than SJSU. And the goal of their entire offense is to shorten the game. Expecting us to do to Navy what USC did to SJSU or even USC to do to Navy what they did to SJSU is naive.

What you posted is exactly what I would have expected before I ran the numbers.

While 2004 was the teams low point Since Tressel's 1st year, 2003 was definitely the low point for rushing offense. It was just plain awful and yes, it was even worse than it was in '04.

The problem with '04 is that we also had first year starting QB(s) (among other things) compounding the problem.

I have lots of thoughts about the Navy game... some good, some bad. Many of you have echoed the things that I am thinking, but the number 1 image of the Navy game that I took away is our o-line play stinks. Flat out stinks. I'm not going to break any forum rules and start bashing players, but we gotta say it like it is... That unit was miserable yesterday.

Why? It seems like this is an area of concern EVERY year!

Is it recruiting? Can't be. We have been landing top recruits consistently for the last 5 years (Boone, Connor Smith, Datish, Block O, and you can consider Boren a recruit... kinda).

Is it play calling? I doubt it. Against a team with 240 pound d-line, we should be able to walk up to the line, tell them Boom will be going over left tackle, and STILL be able to pick up a yard. No fancy pulling guards... just over-powering the defense for one... lousy... yard. But not our 5* recruits.

Is it attitude? I thought maybe it was. But then Boone seemed like the leader and Boren sure does seem like a bad ass.

I gotta believe this comes down to training and coaching. Does the Buckeye's S&C program really optimize the "big uglies" or is it focused more on the skill positions? Are these guys really taught the best techniques? No clue, but it seems like these are the only areas left to investigate. Some how, Ohio State is making it an annual practice to bring in 5* recruits and promptly turning them into mediocre linemen. It needs to be fixed.

That's what I meant.. watching the game it FELT like they dominated the clock.. idk.. and then it disappointed me again knowing we did less with more basically? i'm torn.. I literally saw 3 plays in which this became an absolute blowout and yet it became a damn nail biter!!

It was much better than I thought it would be.

Counted on Navy shrinking the game and eating clock.

Some of the offensive line problems is play calling! You just can't run the same play 3 times in a row and expect something different to happen.
Tressel likes to run the same play from different looks, but we didn't even see that yesterday.
Maybe they have simplified things because of the youth this year. And the movement of players around. But if you have this problem every year, what's the excuse?

Were we expecting change too quickly when we heard of Uecker being hired and Peterson handling the tackles? Probably. It will take a while to see anything from these changes.

I could be way off base on this...

Remember all the discussion about "blocking sleds"? Well, we saw footage from summer that had the OL working on "sleds", but they weren't the type I remember seeing at other programs.

The clip showed a "fire out, get your block, stand your man up" device (I wish I could find it), rather than a "fire out, get your block, drive your feet, drive your man" type of old school scenario.

While irrelevant, there were several times yesterday that I thought we should have imposed our will against Navy's front (4th and 1, etc.), but our guys just seemed to hit and stop moving their feet.

You watch other programs, especially ones who excel at OL play (for instance, U$C), and those guys seem to be driving their assignment into the endzone- constant foot motion.

Just wondering if anyone else thinks that our problem may still be failure to maintain blocks past the point of attack. If so, the "sleds" we saw earlier may actually be a hindrance to success.
