2009 tOSU Offensive Line Discussion (official thread)

Thanks for the input. Glad you saw pretty much the same.

Not really looking to dissect things in this one because I've watched JT for enough years to know what is going on...even though this one almost bit him in the ass.

But...2 points..

1) The late game speed option looks...what do you think that is setting up for later in the season if not this week? Think Troy Smith.

2) 4th and short...with Navy packing the house, tOSU runs a basic power. With the best running QB in the nation, do you expect that to happen often?

Half Full, Half Empty.

To each his own

I like the thought.. at that point in the game it made sense to run that dive.. game was in hand and if its successful awesome.. if it's not they have to drive the length of the field.. makes sense because either way it sets up the bootleg or play action for the future when it's NEEDED!!

I'd sure like to have exhawg's take on this one

I can't offer much right now. I'll try to remember to DVR the USC game and give it a second look. I would have liked to see more push against Navy, but from personal experience against Navy they are a hard team to get push against. Navy usually has smaller players and rely on scheme rather than speed and athleticism. They use smarts and discipline because they don't usually have the athleticism to match up with better schools.
It will be interesting to see how our OL matches up with other top tier athletes from USC. I'm sure there will be some wrinkles added this week for USC, but I would like to see a some better play calling at better times. For example when you are in a 4th and a yard or two you don't run a play where the OL has to pull. The defense stacks the box, tries to get penetration, and clogs the play. In that situation it would have been better off to rely on one on one drive blocking and/or TP to get the yards. As he showed on the TD run play action boot with TP is almost impossible to stop for at least a couple yard gain.
Once again I'll try to do a better job with players and positions next week. Things are never as good or as bad as they look after one game.

If the zebras call that blatant face mask in the open field on Saine, we prolly don't have to worry about the 4th and 2 call and everything is hunky dory right now. We get 15 yards putting us inside the 10. Hopefully punch it in.

How 6 officials missed a facemask that spun a player around in the open field is beyond me.

Upon further review.. the center and the right tackle flat out STRUGGLED!! period.. it's disappointing but true..

Brewster was getting pushed around a bit, but at least he was locking up. Cordle, on the other hand, was just flat out whiffing at times.

Crap... I know!! it was disappointing seeing him on his knees several times..

As you all know, I have a ton of respect for Cordle. I also know that he ends up on the ground more often than he should. There is a drinking game on campus where everytime Jimmy hits the ground.... DRINK...

He is a good lineman and a better person, I am not sure why he is on the ground so much. It could be some lower body strength that may be lacking. Who knows...

Usually if a guy is on the ground too much (not because of cut blocks) it is because his base isn't wide enough. Hopefully these are things that they have seen in film if that is the case.

I have watched film on him specifically for this reason, and he doesnt really have a narrow base. there are a lot of times he goes to his knees and his base is wide enough to ride a horse...

I've only re-watched the first half so far and I totally agree. I'd add that Browning struggled at times from what I've seen.

Those of you who have the game recorded.....
On Duron Cater's first reception, I think it was Shuggarts playing LT.....did he totally miss picking up the guy blitzing on the edge? Against USC....that guy blitzing probably gets to Pryor.

Most likely the reason the guy was unblocked is because of the protection we were in. Many times, there are protections that leave a guy "hot" and it is the QB's resposibility to know where he is and avoid him.

Pad level and sustaining blocks are issues. Navy consistently rolled off blocks or threw our lineman to the ground. Pass protection was better. Watched the Boren brothers double team, and I'm betting they enjoyed it as much as I did watching it. It's a guarantee that our OL will be tested this Saturday and I'm excited to see how they respond.

does Bolls still have them doing that slide step at the snap instead of simply firing off?

Probably, that is standard for most zone blocking schemes. The lateral steps help time up the double teams so that both blockers hit the defender at the same time. The goal is to double team the DL back into the LB and make them choose a side.
For Power (backside guard pulls around) you rely more on firing off and drive blocking the front side defenders toward the inside so that the pulling guard and/or FB can come across and seal the hole. I think Power is what they unsuccessfully tried to run on 4th and 2. JT loves Power a lot more than he probably should, but it's never been one of my favorite plays.
