2009 tOSU Offensive Line Discussion (official thread)

I thought I heard Shugarts called twice for false start. I guess we know now why we haven't seeing them as starters so far. The drop off in skill with the 2nd string OL is scary. Hopefully that is resolved next year when this year's true freshmen are RS freshmen.

:topic:Makes me miss Anthony Davis... but that's off topic.

That's young uns versus seasoned veterans. Anxious to do well, they're looking for their 'edge' which is quickness off the ball. It will drop off in time. Don't really see any of the juniors/seniors doing it as much do you? Browning twice at USC, trying to do well, Boren this year, nil.

Give it a rest. It hurts, but if it doesn't kill you, it's a learning experience. Same for Pryor. Ill-advised, probably, will it make him better, absolutely. I would rather have a player making a mistake being aggressive then sitting on their heels, afraid to be aggressive, getting trampled. So would you, methinks.

I'm not bashing them but I don't think it should be swept under the rug either. You don't think losing 5 yards against USC is a momentum killer? It didn't hurt today because it was Toledo but in a big game like at Penn State they could be costly. I've been pleased for the most part with the OL.

I thought Adams had some nice blocks... but then he coupled that with a lot of plays where he got either blown off the ball and driven back or just completely whiffed.

The potential is there, you could see it, but he's gotta get more consistent and considering all the time and reps he missed last year his future looks bright.

OK, re: Adams.....

Miller played the first two series at LT and played pretty well. Then Adams played the rest of the first half. I think that says something right there. They want him to get alot of reps, and they weren't displeased with how he was playing.

Adams did whiff on the blitzing safety on TP's first INT, but I don' think Miller would have done any better, based on what I saw of him later in this same game.

Second half saw Miller taking the first two series again, with Adams the rest of the half. MIller also spelled Boren at LG, which was a disaster. He consistently got blown up and whiffed badly on at least one pass pro when Bauserman was in. Why Smith or someone else isn't in to spell Boren is a mystery to me. If somebody else knows why they went with this combo, I'd like to know.

Anyway, Adams did make an exceptional play on J Hall's 10 yarder around left end wehre he chipped the DE then moved up and sealed off the LB. I noticed him much more into the second level going for LBs than Miller ever has been.

Browning did a nice job at RT when they benched Shugarts (assuming for the false starts) but #66 (having a brain cramp on the name) is very limited at RG - can't pull and rather slow-footed in pass pro) He does a good job on straight man run blocking.

Shugarts has some work to do in pass pro. He opens up way too early sometimes which makes him vulnerable to the inside move. Again, more comfortable with the run blocking.

Bottom line - I was more impressed with Adams than with Shugarts. Miller does a good job, but I think Adams brings more to the table and, assuming his other issues remain satisfied, will be the starter before too long.

What do you mean by spelled? Do you mean subbed?

I thought the line really played well yesterday. Overall, they seemed to pick up the blitzers better and I liked what I saw from Adams. Honestly, I think Miller could be our best OL though. I haven't really seen him get beat at LT very often...he is stringing defenders out wide and allowing Pryor to step up into the pocket with ease. Boren is blowing guys up regardless of who they are and Browning looks solid. The only player I noticed in a negative light was Brewster...to be perfectly honest, he has been pretty underwhelming all 3 games. It seems whenever a defensive lineman is getting penetration on a run play, Brewster is the culprit. I'll try to rewatch the game though.
