2009 tOSU Offensive Line Discussion (official thread)

I thought the line really played well yesterday. Overall, they seemed to pick up the blitzers better and I liked what I saw from Adams. Honestly, I think Miller could be our best OL though. I haven't really seen him get beat at LT very often...he is stringing defenders out wide and allowing Pryor to step up into the pocket with ease. Boren is blowing guys up regardless of who they are and Browning looks solid. The only player I noticed in a negative light was Brewster...to be perfectly honest, he has been pretty underwhelming all 3 games. It seems whenever a defensive lineman is getting penetration on a run play, Brewster is the culprit. I'll try to rewatch the game though.

I've noticed Brew struggling a little bit too.
I am not impressed with either guard pulling. In fact, Boren really struggles with it. That's one of the reasons why they ran power to his side every time against USC. Plus, he's false started twice when he was the puller.

just a quick observation but Boren pulled on Boom's TD run and sealed it off perfectly...looked good to me...

Not to pick on anyone, but it's going to be difficult for a guard to pull if the center is getting pushed back.. even a little?

A pull guard should already almost be around the center before the center could get knocked back... sometimes I know it doesnt happen that way, but the way OSU square pulls, that shouldnt be an issue.

The guards have been jumping a lot on pulls...not sure if they are just antsy or they are having trouble getting to a defender on time. One guy that always looked great on film pulling was Linsley, though I'm pretty sure he hasn't been on the field yet. On that note, are any of the freshman OL playing or are they all redshirting?

Also looks like Mewhort, Hall, and Linsley are definitely going to be redshirted barring an injury (they are no longer listed on the depth chart).

We are going to have sick ridiculous depth next year along the o-line if all three of those guys were pushing for playing time this year.

"We've got to get better, but we're going to work hard at it." ? center Michael Brewster, on Ohio State's offensive line

Block O, the student version, makes its first appearance of the season Saturday when Ohio State plays host to Illinois. The other Block O, the touted trio of blue-chip offensive linemen the Buckeyes signed in 2008, made its first extended on-field appearance last week against Toledo.

"It's the beginning of something that's going to last for the next couple of years," said the trio's central figure, center Michael Brewster. "We've got to get better, but we're going to work hard at it."

What made it a sophomore quorum were the simultaneous appearances of right tackle J.B. Shugarts, making his first start, and left tackle Mike Adams, finally cleared to play last week after serving a two-game suspension for undisclosed reasons.

However, it wasn't as if the sophomores combined with guards Justin Boren and Bryant Browning to rip through Toledo on every snap. In fact, Shugarts was whistled for three false-start penalties, sullying his day.

Even though Shugarts thought only one of the penalties was justified, he said he treated them as learning moments. That is, after he questioned an official about one.

"I told him I've been coaching 35 years and I've never heard an offensive lineman question an official's call like that," OSU coach Jim Tressel said. "That wasn't good.

"But he was anxious, and he tried to be quick. Obviously we have to eliminate that. Justin had one as well. We can't have those."

Otherwise, Shugarts rebounded.

"He played hard the whole game, no matter what happened with the penalties," Browning said. "He never put his head down, (he) learned what he did wrong and just kept fighting."
