2009 tOSU Offense Discussion

I don't believe so.I hope we see it in Ann Arbor. UM has had a fair share of trouble with option handoffs inside...

Jwins,

What about the Wildcat (if you can call it that when the QB is your best runner)? Just seems like it could help open up some running lanes for the RB, TP, or the sweeper (?). I know the papers published stories about JT liking it, but he also liked the Pistol.

Were they just things they were looking into, things they couldn't execute, or just offseason talk?

0 pass yards in the first half? :shake: Open it up, coach, you can't expect your defense to pull off upsets against talented teams in Big Ten play!

I hope this is sarcasm. If not let me just say that "opening it up" in the first half would've been a bad idea. 1.) Terrelle didn't do so hot with the plays they did run and 2.) They didn't have to.

I liked the things I saw yesterday.

Now we have the formation, have the running game going, using our QB some to run off the option read, because he is a great athlete.

Now we just need to get the passing game going and be balanced.

I love it anytime we rush for over 200, but I would also like to get the passing numbers up there as well.

I understand the rain as well. but we are going to have to be able to pass the ball against better teams.

And to be elite this stat needs to change... 3 tds 3 fgs. We have to score tds when we get close. The game easily could of been 49-0, if we score tds, and convert the easy yardage plays. 3rd and 3 or under.

I have no qualms with what the offense did in the first half yesterday. Absolutely no problems with it. This team has struggled somewhat running between the tackles, and yesterday was the opposite of that. I saw running plays that looked very similar to what UF and Tebow do with the option runs. Nothing that fancy, just a read and great blocking. I also thought the TP's passes were good when he did throw in the second half, after the first pass he missed to Sanz. I saw a quick out, I liked him rolling out, I like him shedding that sack in the fourth, and I liked the TD pass to Sanz. I would have liked to see what they would have done at the end of the first half, because they were setting up to run a 2-minute drill, which I think we would have seen, unfortunately Small mishandled the punt. I thought a few of his runs were good getting upfield, some not so much always trying to get the corner, when it just really isn't there; but when he did get the corner and some blocking, it looked promising. I liked the zone blocking schemes that led to Herron's first TD, iirc, it gave him the chance to cut it back and pound it in.

I do not feel this offense needs to "open the playbook" anymore than they already have, they need to execute what they already do well. If they execute well, then it won't matter what you'll be running, or passing, they will get yards. If the OL gives TP the time he needs to make reads, and makes the holes for RBs like they did against UI, this offense will not have problems. IMO, if they can't execute well what they already run, I don't think they'll be able to execute whatever "opening the playbook" would consist of. Execute and produce.

I find it interesting that people are talking about the play-calling having been vanilla. Granted, no one is complaining; but the plays were actually quite different yesterday.

There was a good deal more misdirection yesterday than in earlier games. The Buckeyes got to the edge quite a bit yesterday because of fakes inside; and they had room inside because of the threat to take it to the edge. They had the Illini defense griping at each other for most of the game.

I agree.

I liked seeing an honest to god running game when the opponent knew we were going to run. There is nothing that will speed up Pryors development faster than a legit run game the opponents have to account for. The line and both backs looked very good. Like 40 said. It seems like they have a better idea of what they can and can't do now. Lets hope the run game can continue to develop and take pressure off Pryor.

On the downside I am still very concerned about Pryors decision making. It really seems to me that as we speak any good defense could count on at least 1-2 turnovers in a game from him. Also it's worth pointing out that the Illini defense is among the bottom 25% in all FBS. Believe it or not next weeks IU defense is better on paper so far than the Illinois defense.

All in all, to use the old phrase, we aren't where we want to be, we aren't even where we need to be but thankfully it looks like we aren't where we used to be anymore either.

I disagree with this. We won 30-0.

There were 3 times where we were down in their end when we converted field goals instead of tds. We got stopped on short yardage situations.

There was also the time when we were on the Illinois 36 and we punted.

We scored 3 tds. That would add 4 more. That would make 49-0. We were moving the ball, we just gotta find ways to make it in the endzone more than fgs, and while the rain had a lot to do with why we ran the ball quite a bit, it didn't have to do with us not converting on short yardage plays, and not scoring tds on those 4 possessions.
