I hate to say it, but I think Mandel is much closer than Schlabach. This team loses 28 seniors PLUS Beanie and whomever else to the NFL draft PLUS it's been rumored that we will probably see some transfers between now and the start of next season. This team has WAY too many questions to automatically be ranked in the top 10... #6 seems rediculous to me at this point. We can't rely on Beanie anymore to take every other snap, and we have a lot of shoes to fill. I can see us ranked between 12-15 maybe, but it certainly doesn't pain me whatsoever to see us outside of Mandel's top 15. Besides, these guys writing these "too early" lists aren't taking these lists seriously whatsoever and neither should we.

If some of these guys progress like we imagine they can, our offensive and defensive lines could easily be the most improved units next year. Our potential depth next year on the OL (with one of J.Boren, Browning, Cordle, or Shugarts on the bench plus our freshmen coming in) puts a big smile on my face. Our DL loses only one in their 2-deep, played a hell of a game against Texas, and are gonna get a big boost from Fellows, Simon, & Co. If Small and/or Hartline leave for the draft, this will be the big break some of our WRs need to get into the rotation (T.Washington, Schwartz, Stoneburner, L.Thomas, and our incoming froshes). I'm a little bit worried about our situation at CB, but with 6 new DBs coming in, it's hard to feel bad about our future at the position. If this team can rally around Pryor and we have some guys in the shadows right now step up big time, we could have another really good year.

Interested to see who ends up being the leaders/captains of this team next year. Pick 2 on D: Homan, Spitler, Wilson, Coleman, Russell. Pick 2 on O: ...Ballard...Cordle...Hartline(if he chooses to come back)...Pryor(as a sophomore)?

I think D will be Russell and Coleman, with O being Cordle and Hartline (If he returns). Ballard will take Hartline's spot if Hartline leaves (Which I doubt he will). Why Russell and Coleman? Amount of starts. Why Cordle? Senior on OL. Why Hartline? Three-year starter and a former special teams standout.

Every college team has question marks going into a new season.

I like the fact that a lot of our "new blood" will get substantial PT next season.
I think many of the guys who will be freshmen and sophomores next year are/will be better playmakers than some that we've had.

Sometimes you get addition through subtraction, and honestly the more guys that leave this year (except Bauserman and D Washington - they are strictly forbidden!) won't really hurt us and also makes us a better team in '10, when we should be right in the hunt for the NC.

Defensive Captains - Dwash and Coleman

Offensive - Pryor and Ballard ( edit: Picked Pryor because of his natural leadership, but it depends on who returns - maybe an Olinemen? Rose?)

if DWash comes back, I doubt he gets much consideration......

Wilson and Coleman on D

I know some of his past mishaps, but I don't see why he wouldn't be considered for recognition. Not that wilson is a bad choice.

typically the team captains haven't had repeated offenses....nothing more, nothing less. Captaincy is earned over 3-4 years in the program and in most instances rewards a player who has dedicated themselves to the team and is someone underclassmen should aspire to be. Typially that doesn't equate to someone with multiple team violations.

Here's your lineup for '09.

QB: Pryor
RB: Boom
TE: Ballard
LT: Adams
LG: Boren
C: Brewster
RG: Cordle
RT: Shugarts
WR: Posey
WR: Hartline
WR: Sanzo

Prominent backups: Stoneburner and Thomas at WR, Browning on the OL, Bauserman at QB.

DE: Gibson; Wells
DE: Williams; Rose
DT: Heyward; Denlinger
DT: Worthington; Larimore
SL: Homan
ML: Sabino
WL: Moeller
CB: Chekwa
CB: Coleman
SS: Hines
FS: Russell

Next year for the defense should be all about getting the best tacklers on the field. After seeing how Moeller and Hines did, there is no way that you leave them off the field against spread teams. Russell has some tackling issues that he needs to work on; he played much better last season. Coleman is moved to corner to get Hines on the field at safety. Also, you should begin the see the stacking of talent on the DL paying off next year, as you have Gibson, Williams, Heyward, Worthington all entering the prime of their career followed by promising players like Wells, Goebel and Mobley. Denlinger and Larimore should also be solid.

Next year should be very exciting, because we'll have a great DL based on their performance against UT, and we'll also have solid veterans at LB and in the secondary. The offense will again need to find identity, but they have more than enough talent there to get it done. No excuses next year. They should at least finish in the top five.

Coleman moved to corner?? I never thought of that. Has he ever played that position? Does he have the hips and closing speed for it? If he does it would be nice to have someone his size in that position, going against the trend of little guys playing CB. But the little guys get those slots because they have the hips and speed to not get burned.

Interesting thought....

edit: Oh and: outside of the top 15 c'mon!! Sure we loose 28 + Beanie, but out of that I count 4 real playmakers on both sides of the ball leaving. CB is the biggest concern, we'll see what happens. LB's are no problem, WR's no problem and with a hopefully improved performance on the line, the running game will be no problem. Mendel is a jackass.

I don't know where you get 28 seniors from (scholarship chart shows only 21). The only seniors we'll really miss are Laurinaitis, Jenkins, Robiskie, Freeman, and Abdallah, with JL and MJ obviously being huge hits to the team in talent and leadership. Other seniors such as Boeckman, Mo Wells, Nicol, Pretorius, and Trapasso won't be big losses but they all made significant contributions during their career (I'll toss in Lane and O'Neal for their solid special teams play). And there's at least one senior OL whose departure will be an actual benefit IMO.

Obviously losing Beanie may be the biggest hit of all, but as far as any other juniors leaving early, none who will probably actually join Beanie in making the jump (Washington, Hartline, and Small) will hurt us that much. I'm actually hoping Hartline hits the road...both his attitude and performance have gone south since Boeckman got benched. And with the unstability of Small, I won't be sad to see him go either. I'm pretty sure Coleman and Russell stay, and that will be big.

Overall, I think this team can actually be better than this past year's team, provided Pryor improves his passing and the OL improves like we hope it will. The defense will have its growing pains early, but by season's end it should be a very good one.

I find it interesting that you left Wilson off of the two-deep at DE. Any particular reason for this? I still feel as though he would be one of the best defensive performers next season.

I don't have any info that says whether he'll return. Even if we assume that he comes back, how effective is a guy with two major leg injuries going to be? Right now I think Gibson and Williams are better.

What kind of PT can we expect our WR recruits to get?

Carter may work up to #3, depending on whether Hartline comes back. Think Robo in '06. It's really a crapshoot to speculate because we have a gluttony of young talent among Posey, Stoneburner, Thomas, Carter and Washington.

Odds.com top 10 teams to win the national championship-
USC 4-to-1
Florida 5-1
Oklahoma 7-1
Texas 8-1
Ohio State 9-1
Florida State 15-1
Virginia Tech 15-1
Georgia 20-1
Miami ( Fla ) 20-1
LSU 20-1

Who has best odds of winning '09 BCS title? | FanNation

Steward Mandel has a top 10 of -
1) Florida
2) Texas
3) USC
4) Oklahoma
5) Alabama
6) Ole Miss
7) Oklahoma State
8) Utah
9) LSU
10) Virginia Tech

with a watch list of: Oregon, Boise State, Georgia Tech, Penn State, Oregon State.

Florida Gators top early 2009 preseason top 10 ranking - Stewart Mandel - SI.com

so Florida, Texas, USC, Oklahoma, Alabama, LSU and VPI are on both lists.
Stewie picked Ole Miss, Oklahoma State and Utah in his top 10 that weren't in the to 20 of odds.com.

Odds.com had Ohio State, Florida State, Miami Fl. and Georgia that weren't on Mandel's list at all.

I think my conclusion is that there are trendy teams to pick for sports writers (both to do well and exclude). I also see some influences of fan bases in the odds.com poll with Notre Dame having 25/1 odds (of course, weak schedule and everybody would love to put them in the game...)

That being said I don't think it matters where OSU is ranked at the start next season. If we beat USC then we are respected and ranked high. If we get our jocks handed to us again than we will be ranked low. Regardless of our starting postion our position in week three is going to be determined on the field against USC.
