2009 Purdue game thoughts

You're right. But it's easier than that. They have been susceptible to offenses that don't mind dinking and dunking down the field. Fortunately for the Buckeyes they don't face that too often.
Most defenses are, and most don't face quarterbacks and receivers making that many plays in a row. During the onslaught, they were making some great catches play after play.

Personally I feel it's coaching kind of hindering our production. The coaching staff preaches no turnovers and no mistakes so often that I feel the guys play with hesitance. A great point on Page two in this thread was that after about 2004 who on the Oline or as a QB was regaurded highly by the NFL??? We've still put people in the NFL but all the one's that are noteable were most likely from the John Cooper Era anyways.

This has been a problem just not this year but in years past also. The only time we were good with regularity was in 2006 when we were absolutely STACKED. Senior QB, Teddy, Gonzo, Roy Hall, Pittman, Wells, and a young Hartline/Robo. It took all that talent to be what, ranked in the 30's in offense? The rest of the years we look out of sync, slow, and confused the majority of the time. 2001, 2002,2003,2004,parts of 2005, parts of 2007, and parts of 2008 we've looked really bad at times.

Now I know other teams will make plays and make things difficult on us, but to be so consistently enept year in and year out that's more of what we're doing not what they're doing. For god sakes we have a QB who's 6'6 230 and runs like a deer, and yet we're still in the bottom QUARTER of the offensive rankings. Not to mention 3 5 star olineman. Talent isn't the problem because we've always had talent. I think it's no coincidence that our defense which often plays fast and aggresive succeeds while our offense plays the opposite and gets the very opposite results.

Again this isn't the first time were I've felt like our offense wasn't capable of being a threat. I see no reason why our defense can be consistently good year in and year out where as our offense is consistently inconsistent year in and year out. There's no excuses to be ranked as low as we normally are every year in tressel's tenure besides 2006. Shoot being ranked in the 30-40 range every year will most likely win us Big Ten championships and maybe even NC's.

I wouldn't trade Tressel for anyone but boy I'd sure be glad if he hired a TRUE offensive coordinator that knew how to mix things up and how to let our guys play FREE.

roll the pocket maybe...?

I'm not sure how difficult it would be to implement that scheme at this time. However, I think it's more a matter of being able to execute the quick pass. If TP can't make the hot read and execute, then he'd better get used to pressure. Purdue not only put pressure on the edge, but they blitzed the gaps pretty good, too.

I re-watched the train wreck. Some things popped out and I actually feel better now that I did. This is for Amurica 2 c HoW thingz arunt two bad.

1. I hate to blame officiating for anything, especially in a game like this but they missed 3-4 plays that could have changed things dramatically(could have killed Purdue's spirit). The fumble by Coleman, every offensive and defensive player left the field, then when they show the field again the Purdue offense is out there. Sanz made a catch and Tress yelled for review to no avail(20 yard gain with O moving(ended in a punt). Browning's hold was one of the worst calls I've seen. The umpire was covered(shown by view one) and Browning popped under his pads and let go right as Saine ran thru(shown by view 2) and didn't even engage the guy for a full second to get a push.

2. Pryor's fumbles looked worse in realtime but the same guy made two eeriely similar plays while TP was trying to put the ball away. Compound the second with the fact that it followed the holding call removing a TD. TP was doing his best to get the ball away on both. The second one the guy was bearhugging him and he had to try to swim him to hold onto the ball.

3. Elliot made some great plays and the defense missed a couple of huge opportunities. Rolle's drop was huge... led to the punt where Ray muffed it. Couple of contain errors that our line usually is good at gave Purdue a first leading to the screen TD and yardage that led to the FG to put them at 26.

4. The offense wasn't as terrible as I had thought. A few plays cost big opportunities for points but all in all they started gelling more than you would think(went 4 of 5 on last 5 3rd downs). The missed pitch on the option cost a 30-40 yard gain because the safety and cb were blocked and we all know how Saine was breaking tackles. The errant pass over Ballard(at first I thought it was a bad play call) cost 4 points. TP had IMO one terrible decision and a few bad decisions. The interception to Carter was terrible. He had 10-15 yards and went for the home run(Carter got bumped a bit but they didn't call it and you can't put that throw on them). The second pick was a half second late and the CB made one of the better plays I have seen a CB make to pick it(even the idiot from NW admired the play). The short passing game really got going late and when TP had time to step up he made some amazing timed throws that moved them down the field. The pass to Carter late was a great pass. He still has a habit of throwing off his back foot but it is still better than it was. The last drive TP barely missed Posey for a 20 yard gain that would have put the ball at around the 10. The TD before was a bit of a toss up but he did have 2 of his better WR's and when he threw they were both open. I would not be surprised to see the offense look enormously better the next 2-3 weeks.

5. Play calling wasn't that bad. Only the 1st and goal series was mind-boggling to me. Your offense was flowing. Your lineman had to be feeling good. Your have them on their heels. Run Saine up the middle and he would have scored easily IMO. Execution was beyond less than to be desired at points. The other question I would have is why not run Saine more in the 3rd. He had a couple of losses due to poor line play but every other time he touched the ball he was killing them. I also felt we gave them a second chance at points late in the first half by running with 45 seconds then passing then running again. They stopped the clock each time and got the ball back with time to work and a great kicker.

So all in all, the guys were very frustrated in the 2nd and 3rd quarters but seemed to rally together a bit. They were down 23-7 late in the 3rd and went 11-3 in the final quarter. Coulda been a lot more but missed 2 big plays that would have put us in position to win(Ballard pass and miss to Posey) I was in the hang behind TP boat before and after the re-watch I feel he made some big strides after the 2nd pick. he calmed down and made some plays. So I would not be surprised if he comes out better and more in sync with his WR's. I think Minny could be in for a rough day. I also think that this could help us against State Penn because they could sleep on us a bit. That game could be TP's make or break moment. I am praying he finds the magic "click" before November 7th.

Go Bucks!!

I just read a tiny bit of this and I absolutely love the point about Ohio State not attacking the middle of the field with the passing game. I think that this is our greatest problem. I don't know ANY team that does not attack the middle of the field the way we don't. There is no good reason to completely avoid the middle of the field. There are so many plays to be made there and we just avoid it. This makes us so much easier to defend, easier to blitz your linebackers with confidence, etc. I don't know why we don't do it. We need a new, innovative OC and their is no good reason to NOT get one. We are Ohio State. We could have a top 5 offense in the country...

It's risky. I think it's a lot more risky to not do so, but that's the reason.

The first time TP throws over the middle, the defense will be so shocked they won't know what to do with themselves. LOL! No risk there.

I watched that TE from Iowa go nuts down the middle of the field against scUM. That guy was so wide open, that he ran like 25 yards without being touched! And he wasn't exactly a speed burner.

You're right about the coaching part... although I did take Woody's course in 67 and I was a registered high school ref for a couple of seasons.

But the issue is Ohio State football. If I followed the fortunes of Northwestern and they just got shoved all over the field by a 1 and 5 Purdue team I might shrug and say things like, "The Cat's really showed some heart there in the 4th quarter." Or, "Well, who we got next week? Let's see if we can win one." Or, "Well, Pat just doesn't have the depth to play physical football with a team like this."

But I'm not a Northwestern fan and yes, I've been spoiled by winning, tradition, good coaching, great players... and it matters to me that Ohio State wins and I get upset when we lose and I try and take what I think I saw happen and compare it with what others think they saw and I enjoy the give and take of it. In the end I believe I come to understand more about the game and so when I watch a quarterback throw off his back foot I talk about it and wonder why. Now if that makes me a fucking idiot, well, it's a hat I wear proudly.

I finally got up the strength to turn on the DVR and watched the game. The only thing i could come away with was the longer we got into the game the more Purdue was gaining momentum. Did we shoot ourselves in the foot a couple of times ? Maybe, but i keep thinking about how Ohio State seems to play alittle over and above of themselves.

And the harder they tried to correct it the worse it became. If any of you have ever played the game of golf - you know what i mean. I am not comparing the game of football to golf but you know what happens. In golf you have to deal with a sense of real concentration but in football maybe you don't have time to deal with that. Everything happens too fast. Sometimes you have to play certain scenario's over and over again in your head, before you get it RIGHT in REAL time. And this could have been what happened in saturdays game. Maybe the team as a whole lost thier sense of concentration and [censored] hit the fan sort of speaking. So its back to the drawing board i guess.

I think I have finally come to a point of acceptance for this loss, and now can rationally post.

Here is what I saw in this game (granted, have not re-watched it, so this is "first look" observations):

*The OL took a huge step backward. There were a couple of play-action pass plays where Purdue absolutely blew right past the line without getting touched. One of those times it was Boren who was spun like a top and watched as Pryor got manhandled.

*What happened to the run game? There were times when they were bringing the house and a draw play could have been huge. I just don't get what the coaches are doing sometimes, but I am not there in the thick of things, so maybe there is a good reason we abandoned the run.

*Reffing on both sides was piss-poor. I am seeing an alarming trend of bad calls throughout the season in all of the games I have watched. Seems to me that it getting worse and not better. Not blaming reffing for the loss, just a bad trend I see.

*Our D is stout, but there still seems to be trouble in coverage on the short out patterns. Their receivers were always open on the 5 yard out routs, and open by a mile. This is a concern to me as other teams will see the film of this game and see they can dink and dunk OSU all day long.

*Pryor is trying too hard. His head is getting in the way of playing football. What I mean is it seems he is over-thinking situations, and when he finally makes a decision, it seems to be a second too late or he forces things. I can not get down on the kid though because he is improving every game (even in this one there were some things I saw him do that impressed me) but he needs to let the game play and roll with it rather than trying to force things to happen. This all will work itself out in time, but he really does need to relax a bit, IMO.

I was upset after the game, but have come to realize that this young team needs to experience something like this. Hopefully, the feeling of losing to a 1-4 team will hit home with the players and inspire them to step it up in the upcoming weeks.

I believe it was Woody who said "There's nothing that cleanses your soul like getting the hell kicked out of you."

I hope the team's soul is squeaky clean now. Go Bucks!!!:osu:
