2009 Linebacker Discussion

can someone please help me, im very very conffused. why would you move spitler to strongside and rolle to middle when rolle is maybe the fastest linebacker we have and spitler is the strongest, we neeed spitler to clog up the middle and rolle to run sidelines. these things really bug me and i think if ohio state would make better decisions we would win more.....

Serious Question:

If you are SO smart regarding Ohio State football and how to place athletes in order to win more games, then why are you posting here and not a football coach at Ohio State?

I think the coaches, who evaluate the talent on a daily basis, have a little more insight than you do. I will trust the coaches on this decision.:wink2:

I have to admit that your question has also crossed my mind. The problem is that your last sentence makes your entire post douche-worthy. It's one thing to ask the question and seek to find if those who are close to the program have some insight. It's another thing to suggest that the coaches who have won more games over the last 8 years than all but maybe two other staffs are somehow making bad decisions and we'd win more if they didn't do so.

My thoughts are Rolle is instinctive and extremely explosive meaning he is more apt to meet the ball carrier at the los or behind it even.. Spitler has the size and strength but perhaps would be more likely to have the RB meet HIM beyond the los 2 or 3 yards down field? idk.. Plus with our extremely athletic and FAST DEs Spitler will be just fine outside..

Can't wait to see Rolle starting for a full year.

I hope Sabino steps it up. I'd really love to see him and Rolle dominating together the next couple of years

I agree. Rolle is a gamer, I love the way the kid plays ball. That being said, I am a fan of him playing alongside whoever earns the starting position.

im not trying to start arguments, trust me im a die hard osu football fan and i go to osu. I may have doubt about spitlers speed and his abiltity to get to the outside because i havent seen anything out of him yet. and about what i said about the decision making with the osu staff i guess that comes a little with who they put out there, if they had sabino out there we would have very very good speed at lb. maybe thats why we struggled with sec teams, if u look at all the sec linebackers they might not be as strong as spitler but they are super fast.

No, they're really not. And speed doesn't mean shit if you don't know how to use it. Sabino is still learning.

We've only played 2 SEC teams in recent years, both in the NC game. The LSU game we lost because LSU was a hell of a team that could beat anyone that year. The reason we lost bad to UF and LSU was not the speed at LB, DB's, or Skill positions but the lines. Their defensive lines dominated our offensive lines and for the most part vice versa.

Watch both games and just pay attention to the lines. Hell our line made Derrick Harvey (who was a good college player) look all world.

Advice for k2.... quit while you are behind. Just because this is a buckeye forum doesn't make the red ratings good.

:hatepc:

:bonk:

and back to subject, I think that the backers will be fine regardless of where they are put due to the depth at defensive line.

6 days :oh:

Honestly, you are going to see your MIKE running down ball carriers and gaps the same as your outside backers. In fact, the MIKE may have more to cover given that the play can go either way and they have to pursue. If a play goes the opposite way of the outside backer, they still have to take angles and it's not like they are usually in the mix for a tackle behind the LOS. Plus, many times they have to stay home and make sure the play doesn't reverse field, which can take them out of the play most of the time. Granted I was a tad confused to see the smallest LB we have playing MIKE, I still think theoretically it makes sense, maybe just not in light of what we see traditionally. While many times you want a strong guy in the middle to stuff the inside run game, against the spread and perimeter run game it may be more valuable to have your fastest guy at MIKE. I think you may see Spitler in the middle against the Wisconsin's of the world, but Rolle in the middle against the Northwestern's. We'll see.
