2009 Heisman Trophy discussion

Three guys this year have dropped my jaw watching them play: Gerhart, Suh and Spiller. Ingram was big time today for Bama, and is an outstanding player, but I can think of a number of backs I've seen over the years at least as good, if not better, who didn't bring home the golden statue.

Still, the problem with the first three guys I mentioned is that their teams didn't make it to the big stage, and that matters in Heisman voting. It is a "best player on a top team" award, and there's a bonus for leading your team to major wins. I won't be scandalized by Ingram winning, even if there's too much "Alabama has never had a Heisman winner" nonsense going on.

Suh was flat ridiculous. I have never seen a DT at the college level shed double teams from a first-rate line like Texas' like that. I don't care who you are and what your criteria are, that guy belongs on every ballot somewhere.

My vote would be:

1. Gerhart
2. Ingram
3. Suh

Spiller also deserves a trip to NY, if I would get to decide who went.

What I think will happen is:

1. Ingram
2. McCoy
3. Gerhart
4. Suh
5. Spiller
6. Tebow

It will be interesting to see if they invite Tebow to NY.

Just saw a commercial for the presentation. The asked whether the frontrunner would win it (showed Ingram), a senior QB would win it (showed McCoy, Tebow) or an unheralded player would win it (showed Gerhart, Spiller). That may be a clue as to whos invited, but IIRC, they showed Harrell in those last year before it was announced who was going. Take out Tebow, obviously, and replace him with Suh and I'd be happy.

Again, Suh is clearly the best player in CFB this year, and it might not even be close. You've gotta think that he's a clear #1 pick this year, unless the Raiders have the first pick (in which case, they'll pick some fast receiver from a directional Louisiana school, because that's how Al Davis rolls).

Is anyone else caring about this award less and less with each passing year? It's become such a joke.
Would Tebow even be remotely in the discussion if not for his performance in the past, and the fact that his team was #1 (because of their defense)?

Would McCoy be as high up in the discussion, same reasons?

Would Ingram be there if Alabama's defense was worse?

Give it to Gerhart or Suh, they have actually deserved it.

If McCoy wins it, and there's a lot of discussion he will despite a bad performance last night, then it's a lifetime achievement award. He is not the "most outstanding player" this year by a longshot. Lou Holthzzzzzzz when asked who would win said "Colt McCoy, he's won more games than anyone in CFB history". What a joke. Each year, the Heisman braintrust need to ensure their voters understand what the award is for. I have no real issues with any recent winner, but this year, they seem intent on making up for past choices.

IMO, here's how it should go...

To NY:
Gerhart
Ingram
Spiller
Suh

How I'd vote:
Suh
Gerhart
Ingram
Spiller

That Heisman Watch site on ESPN is a fucking joke...I don't think anyone could pay me enough to actually listen to the so called "expertise" of these clowns (taken from 2009 Heisman Watch - Heisman Trophy Candidates - ESPN):

ESPN Experts: Brian Bennett, Beano Cook, Rece Davis, Heather Dinich, Brad Edwards, Bruce Feldman, Pat Forde, Tim Griffin, Chris Low, Ivan Maisel, Todd McShay, Ted Miller, Adam Rittenberg, Mark Schlabach and Graham Watson

According to this thing, they seem to think that Suh has a chance. I wonder if that field goal is blocked if he may have actually won the Heisman. I mean, if it's between him and McCoy, Ingram, and Tebow...then why not him? He's been more outstanding.

they hunt down "actual" votes, at least what people claim they voted for

Suh seems to be getting some first place votes and on a lot of ballots , so who knows

Well if it's not Suh, i'd hope it is McCoy or Gerhart. I'd rather it not be Ingram, because I just don't want to see him win 2. Call me selfish, but I love how Archie is the only one to win it twice, and i'd rather somebody win it that isn't going to be around next year.
