2009 Heisman Trophy discussion

The problem, as always, is what does the Heisman mean? I don't know what the voters think -- heck, I'm not sure what I think. Best offensive player? Team MVP? Most talented? Best stats? Best player in big games? Player I'd want to "draft" if CFB redistributed every player for next season?

Breaking down the candidates:

Best RB, Toby Gerhart, hands down. His best games were the biggest: Oregon, USC, Cal and ND.

Best QB, Colt McCoy. Not based on yardage stats, but based on who you want throwing the pass or making the decision. The last bad game I saw from him was his first game against OSU. :oh:

Most versatile player, C.J. Spiller. Pure magic on an otherwise unremarkable team, and one of the all time great returners in CFB history.

Team MVP and best dual threat QB, Tim Tebow. Tebow hate is fashionable on this site due to complete media over-hype, but he's a guy I wanted when we were recruiting him and the player I'd pick if I were a coach and CFB had a draft. His stats have come around, and Florida would not be in the hunt for a third MNC in four years without him. He needs to play a legendary game against Alabama if he wants to win his second Heisman.

Best defensive player, Icantpossiblyspellhisname Suh. Hadn't seen him all year until the Colorado game, but what a monster. He's going to win lots of post-season hardware, and hopefully pulls a Hugh Green, making noise in the Heisman voting for the DL.

The guys with conference championship games (McCoy, Tebow, Suh) obviously still have one more chance to shine on a big stage. Gerhart is in the clubhouse at this point, and his stock is probably as high as it gets. If Tebow and McCoy both have average games, or if their teams lose, he's probably in. If both McCoy and Tebow light things up, I think it's McCoy. If McCoy falters and Tebow shows up big, things get very interesting.

Moving Heisman voting until after the bowls is an interesting idea, my only concern is that it would quickly become a championship game MVP award, as memory of the regular season fades. As it is now, late season games have extra weight in the process, and it does somewhat favor players who play in a conference championship. Of course, the problem with the current system is that without the bowl game included, it's an incomplete season, and some Heisman winners haven't looked quite like world beaters in their bowl games.

Anyway, I'd say that it's McCoy's to lose at this point.

Driving yesterday I heard Fowler building a case for why its o.k. to give the Heisman as a career achievement award (regarding Tebow of course).

I find it just ironical as hell that its the exact 180 degree opposite of the argument the media used in 1997 to take it away from Peyton Manning and give it to Woodson.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CRQ6CuYcAc]YouTube - Stanford Football : 11/18/2009 : Toby Gerhart Heisman Trophy Candidate[/ame]

Give it to Gerhart.

Why?
1) He does it himself
2) Consistent
3) Shows up in big games

Colt McCoy is a great QB, and I would have him in my top 3, maybe #2. I thought he should have won last year. But first half of the year, he was not spectacular, at all. He's turned it on in the second half of the season, but the Heisman is a year-long award. Also, he's got Shipley, who is practically as deserving of the Heisman as he is.

Tebow should not be in the discussion at all. He certainly doesn't do it himself--how many of his TD's are shovel passes to Hernandez? How many passes that go for 10+ yards were actually difficult passes? His passing efficiency is largely a function of just how easy his job is a lot of the time. Furthermore, Gerhart 'pads his stats' against top 10 opponents, USC, etc. Tebow actually pads his stats against mediocre at best teams when they're up by touchdowns late in the fourth.

Spiller's pretty electric, I might have him in the top 3, but I have watched practically no Clemson, so who knows.

Ingram disappeared in the Iron Bowl. Maybe have him as a top 3.

Suh is a monster, and this year is as good as any for a defensive player to get some hardware.

In the end, I would have Gerhart #1, and a Suh/Colt battle for #2 and #3. Gerhart and Suh legitatmately fought their way from relative obscurity to Heisman consideration. Colt is only up there because I can't really think of anyone else, and also he's had a great second half. Also, I'm biased, because I really like the guy, and also thought he should have won it last year

Gene Menez has Gerhart on top, and no Tebow in his top-5.

SI.com

There may be enough people this year like him that don't put Tebow in the Top 5 at all to offeset the people who are going to vote him #1 no matter what. The question will be where will people who vote for Gerhart or McCoy have Tebow...if it's #2 or #3, he'll probably win, but if it;s #4, 5, or out, he very well probably won't.

As far as it being a "career" award (also known as a "Dayne") he already has one, so if that's the case, he doesn't need another.

#4 and #5 are out, the actual voters only submit a 1-2-3 ballot.

I think Tebow will get a scattering of #1 votes, and a shitload of #3 votes, but right now it looks like most of the #1 and #2 spots will be Gerhart and McCoy, as long as Colt doesn't lose or really struggle against Nebraska.

Ummm...uhhh...I knew that, but people will be trying to write in Tebow anyway to score points for the afterlife :paranoid:
