2009 Heisman Trophy discussion

Then we should give it to Cincinnati as a team award.

Nah, they're saving that for Tim Tebow.

How else does one explain a QB who is 61st in passing TDs, 78th in passing yards, 74th in rushing yards and 24th in rushing TDs being touted as a contender for the "most outstanding player in college football" award?

Listening to the talking heads rationalize their preconceived notions of Tim Tebow shows how silly this award has become. Florida has a very good team, and he's a big part of it. He is valuable to his team, but from an individual standpoint based on his production this season, there is no logical, substantive reason why he should even be a part of the "most outstanding player in college football" award discussion.

The problem with identifying "Heisman hopefuls" prior to the season is evident in this case. Instead of openly looking at all players we spend the season trying to decide which "hopeful" should get the trophy.

The Heisman has become a pre-season popularity contest. Kind of like the road to the Nat'l title has. UF, UT, or Bama were penciled into the NC game before the season began. All the other schools get jockied around by how they play/look every week. Those 3 schools all have had wins in unimpressive fashion @ the beginning of the year but b/c they are locked in there @ the beginning they are set in stone in those top spots. Now they are talking about a one loss SEC Championship game runner-up might still have a shot over some of the undefeated's still left (and a UT loss).

Same w/ the Heisman. Colt and Tebow were locked into those top spots from the beginning and b/c nobody is standing out, one of their average seasons on a title-contending team is going to win them a Heisman Trophy. No way Tebow should even be in the discussion. There are probably 40-50 guys across the country that are playing better @ the QB position let alone the best player in all of college FB. Colt has played well lately, but he too had some really poor games earlier in the season.

Both play on excellent teams (and that should count for part of it) but I don't think their body of work to this point in the season is worthy of the award. It isn't a career achievement award. This would be a perfect year to get a defensive player (Mt. Cody, Berry, throw a DB that has double-digit picks in there) or RB (like Ingram) into the discussion. I think it's going to Colt if he finishes strong. Just imo.

And as much as I hate ND, Golden Tate belongs in the discussion as well. He has bailed Clausen out numerous times this year and has single-handedly put ND on his back and brought them back in a few games. He has put together some of the best open field moves and highlight reel catches from a WR that I've seen all year in CFB.

This award will come down to one or two moments that separate that player. For Example, Troy's pass against State Penn, Howard's TD with the heisman pose(I just threw up in my mouth). If Clausen would have beat USC on a last second pass he would be the leader right now. Ingram is leading due to the mediocrity in the race and will probably get passed by one of the QB's having that "Moment".

hehehe NO Tebow. I think Gerhart will fall soon. Ingram will win if he beats Florida.

Well, if Gerhart is going to fall back, it won't be tonight (2 TDs and nearly 100 yards in first quarter)... give him the trophy, then send Stanford to the Rose Bowl along with the Heisman jinx. Sounds just about perfect!

Gerhart is carrying 21 credits at Stanford during the season and kicking ass on the field. I'm pulling for him to win it.
