Dion Phanuef was traded to Toronto. That really helps Toronto but damn what's going on in Calgary????

Toronto also traded for JS Giguere. They dumped Toskala and Jason White. Toronto won the trade IMO, but Giggy isn't the goalie of the future. They have Gustavsson for that.

Credit to the Leafs for getting Phaneuf for a bunch of players with no future in Toronto. The Jackets need a Phaneuf in the worst kind of way.

I'm hearing rumors that the Pens are going to make an effort to get Umberger from the Jackets. Maybe an Umberger/Torres package could be had for Goligoski and a prospect + salary (Dupuis?).

No that would be bad. I'd have to hate Umby at that point :p

Busy couple of days for the Flames

New York Rangers trade Ales Kotalik, Chris Higgins to Calgary Flames for Olli Jokinen, Brandon Prust - ESPN

It took a while, but the proposed trade between the New York Rangers and Calgary Flames was finally completed late Monday night.

The Rangers shipped forwards Christopher Higgins and Ales Kotalik to the Flames in exchange for center Olli Jokinen and rugged winger Brandon Prust, a deal that was nearly consummated Sunday night but was delayed a day.

Higgins is an underachiever with potential and Kotalik is great for the power play - not much else. Jokinen used to be a very good player but has had a pretty rough year from what I've heard. Don't know much about Prust.

Jokinen is the best player in the deal, so I guess that's good for the NYR. Also good that they shed Kotalik's salary. Sather is good at dumping bad contracts that he managed to get on the team.

The Flames are going to look completely different by the trade deadline. I'd imagine that they're trying to get Kovalchuk pretty hard.

Kovalchuk to New Jersey for Oduya, Bergfors, Palmieri, 1st.

NJ = Eastern Conference favorites. Kind of surprised they dealt Oduya though for a rental though, even if the rental is Kovalchuk. Compare it to Pittsburgh getting Hossa - they traded two young roster players in Christensen and Armstrong, neither of which have proven as much as Oduya OR Bergfors at the time or now, a high risk/high reward prospect in Angelo Esposito and a 1st.

NJ gave up quite a bit for a rental considering how well they've been playing. If Kovy resigns there (unlikely), it's a good deal.

EDIT: Now I'm reading that the prospect is Patrice Cormier instead of Palmieri. High risk/high reward prospect sounds about right. He's the dude who threw the elbow that I made a thread about.

Apparently NJ isn't as high on Oduya as I thought they were, so it's a pretty good deal for them I guess. Definitely good if they win the cup..

maybe its me, but I've never considered Kovalchuk to be a "star" player....

He's skilled, but he's not the guy that can put a team on his back - much like Hossa. He needs good players around him to excel.

Going to be interesting seeing him in Lemaire's system.. he certainly isn't know for his defense.

He'll have Parise on the other wing and a very underrated playmaker at center in Travis Zajac. I think that'll be a dangerous line.

Sure, but what wins in the postseason is defense.

This is another trade - much like the Calgary-Toronto-Anaheim trade that doesn't seem to have really improved the teams trading for the actual playoffs.

umberger wont be traded, sans massive overpayment.

shero and company have been a fixture in nationwide. howson seems intent on a player out of boston. torres value is a 2nd rounder at this point. not sure on torres in that case as then it will be a pick of about 60, value id say is 55 or a tad lower, hard to say...

modin will be asked to waive his nmc.

That's good/bad. Love Umberger here, would love him on the Pens.

Is Lemieux included in Shero's company? Maybe I should start hanging out at Nationwide.

umbie is highly valued (read overvalued by the club). therefore overpayment is required. i as one say no such thing as untradeable, ever, never, no such thing. some require return grossly over their value, umbie is one of those...
