THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
The Southeastern Conference is to women's college basketball what an Indy car is to a Sunday drive in the country.
True or not, the perception is that the SEC runs noisy rings around the paneled station wagons and minivans, with Tennessee, LSU, Vanderbilt and Georgia, especially, owners of well-earned national reputations.
Ohio State (9-1) heads into the heart of the SEC for a meeting with Mississippi (6-2) at 2 p.m. Sunday. Buckeyes coach Jim Foster said, without even having to look, that the Rebels "are very, very quick."
Foster spent 11 seasons at SEC member Vanderbilt before coming to Ohio State in 2002, so he is familiar with the conference.
"The SEC is known for its athleticism, as well as its physicality," he said. "I don't have as close a view as I once had, but obviously I think that is their game. (Georgia coach) Andy Landers is still there. (LSU coach) Van Chancellor is back. (Tennessee coach) Pat Summitt is still there. (Mississippi State coach) Sharon Fanning is still there."
OSU-Mississippi preview
Sunday, December 13, 2009 3:11 AM
2 p.m. today
? Where: Tad Smith Coliseum, Oxford, Miss.
? TV: None
? Radio: WOSU-AM (820)
? Records: Ohio State 9-1, Mississippi 6-2
? Matchup to watch: The Buckeyes are running into another high-scoring guard in senior Bianca Thomas, an all-SEC first team selection. OSU couldn't contain Duke's Jasmine Thomas and had problems with California's Alexis Gray-Lawson and Oklahoma State's Andrea Riley. Bianca Thomas might have better three-point range than the others, but keeping her out of the lane and limiting her offensive rebounds will be defensive musts.
? Notable: Mississippi lost 75-66 at Old Dominion last Sunday. Thomas scored 25 points and is making 93.3 percent of her free throws. The Rebels have veteran guards and are taking care of the ball this season as their 134 assists-to-118 turnovers show. Mississippi is limiting opponents to 36 percent shooting from the field. Ohio State rallied in the second half last Sunday to defeat Wisconsin 70-55. The Buckeyes bench scored one point against the Badgers and two in the loss at Duke. Point guard Samantha Prahalis needs three assists to reach 300 for her career. The Buckeyes have gotten to the free-throw line 113 more times than their opponents.
? Next: vs. Wright State, 7 p.m. Tuesday in Value City Arena

MolGenBuckeye;1620183; said:It seems like this can only be a good thing. The Big 10 hasn't given a lot of deep competition over the last few years, and I'm not sure the team has been ready for it come tournament time. More tough opponents are a good thing, even if a loss or two come with them. I'd rather be a battle-tested 2-3 seed than a 1 seed that got there through lack of competition.
OSU-Wright State preview | BuckeyeXtraOSU-Wright State preview
Tuesday, December 15, 2009 2:59 AM
7 p.m. today
? Where: Value City Arena
? TV: None
? Radio: WOSU-AM (820)
? Records: Ohio State 10-1; Wright State 4-3
? Matchup to watch: Protecting the three-point line has become a dicey issue for the Buckeyes. Mississippi hit 11 three-pointers in Sunday's 79-77 loss to the Buckeyes. Watch to see if the OSU guards start going over the top of screens and not under against a quick Wright State team.
? Notable: The Raiders lost back-to-back games to ranked Vanderbilt and Dayton teams before grabbing a 75-68 road win Saturday at Miami. Ta-myra Davis scored 15 points off the bench in the victory. LaShawna Thomas, WSU's co-leading scorer, played with Ohio State senior Cherise Daniel at Eastmoor. Forward Tanni Scott also is a City League product, from Centennial. ... The Buckeyes rallied from 10 points down in the final 2:58 Sunday to defeat Mississippi. Point guard Samantha Prahalis had six assists in the win and now has 303 in her career. She needs four to move past Geneva Sanford (305) and Averill Roberts (306) into 10th place in program history. Coach Jim Foster needs five wins to reach 700 for his career.
