2009-2010 Lady Buckeyes Basketball (6 straight Big Ten Titles)

Classy move by Foster regarding Little:)

Women's basketball: OSU's big first half worth shouting about
22-point lead at break gives bench players chance to shine

The scramble for the loose basketball reached the sidelines in front of the Wright State bench last night, and Ohio State guard Shavelle Little let loose a scream that could have shattered a drinking glass on the other side of Value City Arena.

The emotion, which wasn't exactly new for the senior guard, erupted because Little couldn't quite control the ball.

"I scream like that in practice," Little said. "The Big Ten is coming up. I think we're prepping for the Big Ten. We're getting after it. We've been emphasizing (defense) in practice a lot."

The eighth-ranked Buckeyes really didn't have any trouble dispatching the overmatched Raiders, 84-47. Ohio State shot 63 percent from the field for the game and scored 28 points off 20 turnovers, a half-dozen of which were created by Little.

The Buckeyes (11-1) even took a moment at halftime to present Little with her bachelor's degree in criminology because she couldn't attend the graduation ceremony Sunday. Basketball, in the form of a road game against Mississippi, got in the way.

OSU coach Jim Foster surprised her by bringing in her family from Ann Arbor, Mich., for the ceremony.

"I didn't know that was going to happen," Little said. "It meant a lot."

OSU-Alabama A&M preview

OSU-Alabama A&M preview

Saturday, December 19, 2009 3:08 AM
8 tonight

? Where: Value City Arena
? Streaming video: BigTenNetwork.com
? Radio: WOSU-AM (820)
? Records: Ohio State 11-1, Alabama A&M 4-3
? Matchup to watch: As has been the case often this season, the focus will be on guard play. The Bulldogs' strength lies in their veteran backcourt, led by Katrich Williams and Whiquitta Tobar. The Buckeyes will have to deal with quickness at both ends of the court, as will the Alabama A&M guards.
? Notable: The women's game follows the Ohio State men's game against Delaware State. The Bulldogs, out of Huntsville, Ala., defeated Central Michigan 74-61 this week and have won three in a row. Alabama A&M was picked to finish fifth in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The Buckeyes' Jantel Lavender now has 800 rebounds in her career. Point guard Samantha Prahalis is 10th in program history with 311 assists in 47 games. Freshman Amber Stokes is still out because of a stress injury in her left foot.
? Next: vs. Western Illinois,
4 p.m. Tuesday

They really need to improve their outside shooting before they can start calling themselves one of the more elite teams around the country. 2-12 from three-point line is not good.

Lavender, Prahalis help Ohio State shake doldrums

With 11:40 remaining last night in Value City Arena, Ohio State women's basketball team was waist deep in a sticky situation that nobody really expected.

Alabama A&M trailed eighth-ranked Ohio State by eight points and had to be pondering at least the possibility of an upset.

Then reality struck in the form of Samantha Prahalis and Jantel Lavender, proving that having a pair of aces in the hole can turn a close encounter into a romp -- as happened in the Buckeyes' 78-54 win.

"You could see a great team finally come together around that 10-minute mark," Alabama A&M coach Altherias Warmley said. "At that point, nothing we did was right, and it seemed like everything they did was."

Lavender recorded the 44th double-double of her career with 23 points and 11 rebounds.

Prahalis had her fifth double-double of the season: 16 points and 12 assists.

The 2-12 was very uncharacteristic but if they were a jump shooting team I would agree that it would be troublesome. As a team that has a strong inside game and a very good transition offense, they can overcome a poor perimeter night once in awhile, so long as it doesn't come against a team that can also shut out one of the other two options.

I do believe the Buckeyes are a legit contender and an Elite 8/Final 4 year is very possible. The things I would worry might get in the way is inconsistent perimeter D that allows too much penetration and lapses on the defensive boards giving up second chance baskets. Those flaws have shown up more than once and are the things that can really derail a season. They showed marked improvement in those areas as the season went on last year, however, and I think that will be the case again.

Bottom line - this is an exciting team with a real chance to make noise in the postseason. They deserve some serious support.

Hmm. I thought you were one of those that advised against "living and dying by the three." Yet when the Buckeye women don't do just that, you're in their faces about that.

Color me confused.

Even including yesterday's game, the 3 point shooting averages for Brittany and Sarah are;

Johnson............27-52.......52%

Schulze............25-50.......50%

As of last week, they were 6th and 9th in the country and they certainly have my respect and admiration!

Keep shooting girls.......many of us love what you are doing!!!

:oh::io: I think it's time to put Little back in the starting line-up and let Hill come off the bench. She has been punished enough and its time to move on. Little is the two-time defensive player in the big ten and she is still coming off the bench WOW!!!

GO LADY BUCKS!!!!!

"She has been punished enough and its time to move on."

Punished?....Punished for what?.....You obviously know something I do not.....please enlighten me.

From everything I have read, Shavelle likes coming off the bench and enjoys the "shock effect" and "energy" she creates for the team. I have never heard that she is uncomfortable in that role or that she feels that she is being "punished" by not starting.....do you believe that that is the case?

As for Tayler, evidently the coach feels that if she is to improve and contribute significantly to the team, this year, then she needs to start. I neither agree nor disagree......it is his decision to make.

Upcoming TV games (finally!):

Jan 9 @MSU on CBS
Jan 17 vs. Indiana on BTN
Jan 25 @Purdue on ESPN2
Jan 28 vs. Minnesota on BTN
Jan 31 @Indiana on BTN
Feb 4 vs. Iowa on BTN
Feb 11 vs. Purdue on BTN
Feb 14 @Minnesota on BTN
Feb 21 vs. MSU on ESPN2

And of course the B10 tournament is on TV too. It is surprising that we're this far into the year and they've only been on TV once.

If she's comfortable there, I think it's a perfect role for her. I absolutely love Shavelle's play and heart out there, but she's not the most offensively gifted player on the team. :) Having a lineup where everyone can shoot has allowed our outside threats to pull the defense away from Lavender a bit, and I fully endorse that line of thinking. That said, we should still employ a liberal dose of Shavelle, because it's darn fun to watch her play basketball!
