2009-2010 Lady Buckeyes Basketball (6 straight Big Ten Titles)

75-45 final. A complete thumping - no Boilermakers in double figures. Jantel had a dominant game with 20 and 11, Tayler had her best game of the year with 14, Sammy with 9 and 11 assists, Brittany and Amber with 8, Sarah and Andrea with 6, Cherise with 4. The bench played well Maria was a tiger on d) - Andrea had 5 boards and 4 blocks.

Buckeyes clinch at least a share of an unprecedented 6th straight B10 championship.

Great job ladies! One thing I learned from floor level seating is - you certainly don't trash talk our team before or during the game without receiving a royal thumping in return!

Our starters all played tremendous; Lavender absolutely dominated inside, Prahalis ran the point and pushed the tempo like only she can do, Hill played her best game to date, Schulze is back playing fearless under the basket, and Johnson played very well despite the ankle issue holding Rayburn to 3 pts the first half while continuing to connect on the 3s. She did appear to have some swelling when the team returned to warmup after halftime, glad to see her rest and get limited minutes the second half.

Stokes looks to have what it takes to continue giving OSU the Defensive POY, loved that spark in her eyes last night!

Our post players especially had some fire down under the hoop that has been missing for the last few games. Schulze ended up with 8 boards and 5 steals - she was a force on defense last night. Lavender and Walker combined for 7 blocks. Great work ladies, and congratulations to the whole team on another championship!

(Oh, and how about that full court assist by Sammy?)

25-23 Minnesota 4+ to go. The shots aren't falling easily but the Buckeyes are working to get good ones and seem to be closer to getting in a rhythm. The GGs started out very hot even though the defense has been good - 4 offensive fouls and a few near shot clock violations.

32-27 Minnesota at the half. The GG defense has been solid - trying to deny Sammy outside and doubling on Jnatel when they can. They're playing very aggressively on the perimeter and the game has been very physical with many whistles ans stoppages - that pace favors Minnesota.

The Buckeye defense has been good but Minnesota has been able to get it inside (out scoring OSU 16-12 in the paint), have made a few shots late in the possession and have shot it pretty well from outside as well.

The offense has been cold - there have been some good shots that just haven't gone in and a little frustration showing but no to the level of the breakdowns at Indiana, 2nd half Purdue away or 1st half PSU. Tayler has been cold - perhaps a few jitters on returning home.

Halftime stats:
Sammy with 9 - a perfect 6-6 from the line but only 1-6 from the floor; 5 assists and 0 turnovers
Jantel has 8 on 4-7; both Sammy and Jantel have 2 personals
Andrea has 4 and Tayler, Amber and Alison have a bucket apiece. Brittany and Sarah haven't scored and the team has 8 TOs - they also forced 8 from Minny but haven't scored much off them

If they can turn it up a notch and keep working to get a good look I think the second half will go OSU's way. They're going to have to fight off giving in to the frustration of a tough shooting night.

64-59 Final Buckeyes clinch their sixth straight title outright. That truly is a magnificent accomplishment.

I think this game shows a little growth from some of the recent road struggles. They worked hard to overcome a tough scoring day and everyone stayed aggressive on the offensive end, continuing to take good looks even if they had missed before, looking to penetrate rather than settling for jumpers, working the glass, etc. Itb wasn't pretty but you have to find ways sometimes and they did today. Free throw shooting was excellent: 26-30 overall, Sammy 12-12, Tayler 7-10 - a realkey on a day when the team shoots 35% overall and only 2-12 from 3.

Sammy 19 pts, 8 assists (only 2 turnovers), 6 reb, 3 steals
Jantel 14 pts 9 boards 2 blocks and a steal
Tayler 13 pts and very aggressive intelligent play throughout the second half especially after Minnesota started denying Sammy the inbounds and she had to run the offense
Sarah 3 pts - but it was big and gave the Bucks their first lead at 42-39 midway thru the 2nd half - and 4 boards
Brittany didn't score but played good defense and stayed aggressive on the offensive end
Andrea 9 pts off the bench plus 6 boards and a block in extended minutes to offset Minnesota's physical inside play
Alison, Amber and Shavelle with 2 apiece - Shevy was a terror in the second half, disrupted Minnesota's offensive sets and came away with 3 reb and 2 steals

As for "dribbling too much" and "missing wide open people upcourt" (?- didn't see that at all) - Minnesota's defense was tough, aggressive and physical all game and combined with OSU's cold shooting from the outside caused the Buckeyes to dig down and win a slugfest with very tough d of their own and a hard nosed offense that worked for everything it got. There were some possessions where the ball was dribbled alot looking for an opening inside but that was mostly a credit to the GGs, IMO. I'd take this as much more of a positive than the close wins at Michigan or at home against Wisconsin earlier in the year which seemed to be blah efforts. It does point out that this team is going to have to adapt more quickly when things aren't working (instead of waiting on a halftime adjustment as happened today) - but then again surviving these regular season games is (hopefully) how you learn what needs to be done for a better postseason run.
