2008 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines

I really think this thing can be won by anyone this week. It is hard to tell what we will get from Tiger, how much does the leg factor? If Phil has his head on straight he has to be the favorite. Singh, Goosen, Furyk and Els really have not been playing very well as of late. They do tend to "show up" for the Open, but still dont see either winning. Garcia, please. If JRose could put 4 rounds together in a major he could become a factor. He is playing decent. Can Cink get over the hump? I really think Leonard at those odds are worth laying down some vbucks. He is playing extremely well, mostly due to his putting, which is a strong point in any major.

Tiger shouldn't have 3:1 odds. He hasn't played in over a month and finally played 9 holes. No way he wins.

if he hadn't been hurt he'd be 3:2. don't forget that he has won the past 4 PGA tournaments at torrey pines. i like phil in this one since its at torrey. he's a san diego native and has played a lot of golf at torrey throughout the years. Rose has played well enough this year that he should factor. is leonard long enough? Don't sleep on Harrington either. He played really well this week in memphis. WOOD, that new avatar is rediculous, btw.

Even though most of those guys say they are not intimidated by Tiger they certainly don't seem to play their best golf when he is in the field. I agree with you regarding Phil being from San Diego but how many times has Tiger played at Torrey and won. He also seems to do fairly well after a "layoff". Agree with you on Rose but I think there are a lot of guys in the field who could probably win it but will they is the question. I still like Tiger but we shall see:wink2:
agree that is rather classless

It's not classless, it's hillarious. Anyways, I looked at the finish from the Buick earlier in the year and Leonard finished in the top 10 (maybe even 5 i can't recall) so i guess he does have the length. they lengthened it even more for the open though. 7600 at sea level is no joke. when i played torrey i was at least a club shorter than usual.

2008 US Open at Torrey Pines

Will Open hinge on Tiger's left knee?

When Tiger Woods says he is good to go, what he means is that he is operational. Which, for anyone else, would mean optimum.

Eight weeks after a third procedure on his problem left knee, the world's greatest golfer acknowledged yesterday that he has yet to walk 18 holes since the final round of the Masters on April 13. Yet if the long layoff diminishes Woods' chances of winning the U.S. Open at Torrey Pines, it may only be by a matter of degree. If Woods can turn his knee without trauma, the rest of his game remains transcendent. If Woods can walk, Torrey Pines is a place where he virtually walks on water.
Despite the accumulated wear of his 32 years, Woods is still about as good to go as anyone going. With six career victories at Torrey's Buick Invitational, he returns from rehab a 5-2 Open favorite in a field of 156 players.

?Super athletes, they always baffle us,? Dr. Vijay Vad said yesterday afternoon. ?In his case, because he's so fit going into the surgery, he's going to come out of the surgery with much less recoup time. . . .
?My prognosis is he's going to do well. The likelihood of him holding up is very, very high. The question is about his scores.?
A sports medicine specialist for golfersmd.com, Vad says Woods' medical history makes him a high risk for arthritis by the time he turns 40. Some of this is a product of the additional stress Woods places on his left knee and hip in attaining astonishing clubhead speed. Some of it, simply, is an occupational hazard.
Professional athletes are always aching somewhere. Society tends to focus more on Woods' ailments because of his relative stature rather than his relative infirmity. His bruise is another man's bypass; his hangnail another man's hip replacement.
His left knee, then, is a joint that's jumpin' ? off of the operating table and into the headlines. How much to make of it is the Open's open question, one that says as much about Woods' mystique as his maneuverability. ?I just don't see how it's going to have a negative effect on him,? Phil Mickelson said yesterday. ?I think that players in any sport, but golf as well, have to deal with injuries or what have you. And I just can't see a better player make adjustments easier than Tiger. I just don't think it will be a problem.?

2008 US Open Odds

June 4, 2008

The 108th US Open is set to get underway Thursday June 12th at Torrey Pines in California, and it will be the 2nd go around for many golfers at the course as it is the same course that held the Buick Invitational earlier this season. While the Buick Inv. splits the first 36 holes between the North and South courses, the US Open will only be played on the much more difficult South course. The US Open is the 2nd major of the year and its been almost 2 months since the last one, where Trevor Immelman was able to hold off Tiger Woods for the Masters Championship. Here is a look at the top 5 players odds to win the US Open. You can also check out the rest of the fields odds to win at the end of the article.

Tiger Woods ?7/4 at Sportsbook.com
While there is a lot to like here, as there is no question that Tiger Woods is the best golfer in the world right now, it will be very interesting to see how he responds to the first tournament play after a 2 month layoff from knee surgery. With Woods past success at Torrey Pines there is no wonder this guy is the man to beat at the US Open.

Phil Mickelson ?7/1 at Sportsbook.com
Mickelson also has a pretty decent past at Torrey Pines as he has two career victories on the course. Mickelson finished tied for 5th a the Masters and just picked up his second win of the season at the Crowne Plaza Invitational. While Mickelson has yet to win the US Open he does have four 2nd place finishes, but is coming off last year where he failed to even make the cut.

Sergio Garcia ? 15 -1 at Sportsbook.com
Garcia looked to have maybe found his game once again as he took home the Players Championship this season. Garcia best finish at the US Open was a tie for 3rd in 2005, ad he is still looking for that first major championship of his career. Garcia didn?t play at the Buick Inv. so this will be his first action at Torrey Pines this season.

Jim Furyk ? 20/1 at Sportsbook.com
Even though Furyk hasn?t had a great season this year, he always seems to kick it in gear right around the US Open. After winning the tournament back in 2003, Furyk just missed another as he finished tied for 2nd in both of the last two years. Don?t be surprised to see this guy in the hunt on Sunday.

Vijay Singh, Adam Scott, Padraig Harrington, and Retief Goosen ? 25/1 at Sportsbook.com
After Furyk things begin to bunch up as the odds makers don?t see to much in the rest of the field to give them great odds. But for a better this is good because you get some big names at a pretty good price, as we wouldn?t be surprised to see any of these 4 walk away the US Open Champion this weekend. Singh has finish tied for 6th two out of the last 3 years, Scott has yet to play well at all at the US Open, Harrington is your defending British Open Champion and finished 5th at the US Open in 2006, and Goosen just might be the best bet out of the group, as he has won the US Open twice(2001, 2004).

THE LIFE OF REILLY

Tiger or Phil? Phil or Tiger? The choice is easy.

Rooting for Tiger Woods is like rooting for Justin Timberlake to get lucky, Exxon to hit a gusher, Bill Gates to find a twenty on the sidewalk. It takes no imagination. It takes no courage. What's the point? It's 1-to-5 he's going to win anyway, whether you cheer or not. Makes no difference to him. It's like rooting for erosion.

Rooting for Phil Mickelson, on the other hand, is like rooting for the salmon to eat the bear. It takes faith. It takes forgiveness. It takes Tums. Mickelson is a roller coaster in an earthquake. One shot will be so inspired you'll cover your mouth in astonishment. The next will be so Spam-brained you'll slap your forehead in disbelief. It's like watching a blind guy jaywalk across Hollywood and Vine. Your fist is in your mouth the whole way.
I bring all this up because Woods and Mickelson will play side-by-side Thursday and Friday at the U.S. Open. You must choose. You cannot root for both. It's un-American.
Here's how to tell them apart: Woods has the Joe Weider body, the Iron Byron swing, the Green Beret mind. Mickelson's body leans toward Sara Lee. He's carried two drivers?one for hooks and one for slices?but none for straights. He can get it up and down out of an ice cream cart, which is a good thing, because he's there a lot. He might be the only athlete whose catch phrase is, "I'm such an idiot!"

For Woods, there's almost nothing at stake this week. It will be just another hunt for just another major, his third U.S. Open and his 14th major overall. It's Year 13 of his Scorched Earth Tour, which we all know will end up with The Coolest Guy in the World owning every golf record known to man, to say nothing of every T-bill. He'll finish with 25 majors, making Jack Nicklaus look like a guy with a rental set.

Tiger can get it done, however the biggest comeback from an injury story (for golfers anyway) would have to be Ben Hogan's return from a near fatal car crash to win the Open.
