Go Blue Michigan Wolverine: Michigan Tidbits: Football Practice from Friday more detailed report
Maizeman said:
First off, let us talk Quarterback situation. First posters need to understand that on each play run by the offense, Coach Rod literally stands right next to the Quarterback. If our Offensive Center would snap the ball wide, Coach Rod would catch it that is how close he is to the plays.

Coach Rod is very demanding of the Quarterback and is more involved with Quarterback?s than any position group by far. The Running Backs may be next, but it is a big gap between the two positions.

This is (My Opinion) It is so important that Threet be successful this year at Michigan. The reasons for this are that a successful Threet buys Michigan time, which in fact is much needed time.

1) He is the Quarterback on the roster that has the biggest upside.
2) He is the Quarterback on the roster that gives us a chance at a vertical passing game.
3) This is the main point. If he is successful it relieves the pressure on incoming Quarterback?s (Newsome, Beaver, or whoever) next year and from Michigan to start all over agin two years in a row.

If Threet is not successful and Sheridan becomes our regular Quarterback it will be a one-year deal and we will once again be starting a first year Quarterback in 2009 and telling everybody that we will have a freshman starting.
Threet had a good practice on Friday. So far, Coach Rod is not allowing the Quarterbacks to be hit. (Let us hope that continues ? lol.). There is some concern that Threet may have a hard time staying healthy since in spring he was hurt on the first snap they allowed defense to go after the quarterback and hit the Quarterbacks.

Threet biggest issue, which needs immediate improvement, is his reads and getting rid of the ball sooner, which means passing the ball before Wide Receiver makes his break. In this offense, the Quarterbacks know where the Wide Receivers are going to be and he needs to get the ball to them quicker.

Another problem that I saw in spring and continues in fall is Michigan?s new version of the ?check down? pass.
...
So far, our Quarterbacks are throwing this pass excessively often and think it is due to lack of confidence.
...

After watching practices for a number of years I have come to the early conclusion that During drills, Stonum has looked his usual impressive self, but during offensive plays he is not getting the ball enough. This is another thing coaches are harping at the Quarterbacks about. Once in a while they want Quarterbacks to throw the ball downfield. If not the defenses will just cheat and become excessively aggressive with their safeties and bring them closer and closer to the line of scrimmage and almost dare Michigan to throw the ball down the field (meaning the 20 yard pass). In addition, current and future Michigan recruits to see what kind of offense Michigan will use.

Good news is our Quarterbacks are learning a new system and they are learning it against our defense. After watching practices for a number of years I have come to the early conclusion that Shafer and English are almost the same coach.

MGoBlue - Practice 5 Reports
The quarterback competition will be on-going throughout fall camp as the coaches are alternating snaps between Nick Sheridan and Steven Threet with the top two groups. True freshman Justin Feagin has been getting the majority of the snaps with the third group.? "Today (Friday) was probably the best day of practice for our quarterbacks," said Rich Rodriguez. "They ran the offense very well and did not throw the ball to the guys in the other shirt."
The coaching staff had a field-goal-kicking challenge at the conclusion of practice on Thursday (Aug. 7). The coaches tried to distract the kickers throughout the process, from blowing whistles to tossing papers, to waving hands over the ball, in order to make the kickers maintain focus. The final kick at practice, a successful 40-yard field goal by K.C. Lopata, kept the entire squad from running sprints.
? Lopata added a 56-yard field goal during Friday's full-contact scrimmage after the offensive possession stalled.

JWins - please proof read before posting. This is the RR offense you are talking about.

Barwis was playing defense. I know its hard to conceive an RR coached offense actually stalling but come on, they are after all only 11 guys.

U-M's Grady pleads guilty to drunken driving

by Barton Deiters | The Grand Rapids Press
Saturday August 09, 2008, 1:30 AM

WYOMING -- His football future may be in question, but former East Grand Rapids gridiron standout and University of Michigan student Kevin Grady's drunk driving charge has been settled.
Grady, 22, pleaded guilty in Wyoming District Court to driving while intoxicated.
Grady was stopped in a 2007 GMC Yukon Denali just before 2 a.m. on July 2 near 44th Street SW and Byron Center Avenue. He had a blood-alcohol level of 0.281 by breathalyzer, but his State Police blood test showed his level at .240. Under Michigan law, a driver with a blood-alcohol level of 0.08 or higher is considered drunk.
University of Michigan coach Rich Rodriguez said last week that the junior running back has been suspended from "actual games," but is still allowed to practice with the team. He said it is possible that Grady could work his way back into a playing role.
Grady will get six points on his license and will likely face driving restrictions imposed by the Secretary of State, according to Wyoming City Attorney Jack Sluiter.
Sluiter said Grady received his court alcohol assessment in Ann arbor which allowed him to be sentenced at the same appearance where he pleaded guilty.
"He just kind of walked in and pled," Sluiter said of Grady's July 29 court appearance.
He will also have to report for probation for 12 months -- which he can also do in Ann Arbor, he will have to pay for his own random drug and alcohol testing, will not be allowed in bars and taverns and will be fined $1,290 by Wyoming and $2,000 by the state for its Driver's Responsibility Fee.

Michigan RB gets snaps at QB

Posted: Monday August 11, 2008 07:19AM ET

Michigan running back Carlos Brown is drawing attention at quarterback. Asked about his opportunity, he was hesitant. "I'm a running back, so that's all I'll say," Brown said, before saying a bit more. "I was a quarterback in high school. I don't do it a lot. I just flash back there and feel comfortable when I'm back there." His ability to run contrasts the style of primary quarterbacks Steven Threet and Justin Feagin. But, as Brown said, he is a running back. And that's the position he'll probably be most important, competing with Brandon Minor for lead-back status now that Brown has recovered after missing most of the spring with a finger injury. According to both players, there also have been moments in practice where both were in the backfield, so expecting one to have a Mike Hart-level of carries is unlikely.
Detroit Free Press

That can't be a good sign of the QB situation if one of their supposed top RB's is getting reps at QB with 4 already on the roster.
