2008 tOSU Spring Game (4/19) & Practice Discussion

April 2, 2008
Watching practice by osmosis
Maybe we can't watch spring practice. We can still ask questions.
And according to the defensive players and defensive coordinator coach Jim Heacock the other day, there's plenty of action going on out there -- or maybe in there -- on the practice field. Some of the highlights gleaned from the conversations:
A -- Freshman offensive linemen Mike Adams and J.B. Shugarts are trying to prove they deserve immediate consideration for playing time by getting after it, whether they make a mistake or not.
A -- Redshirt freshman running back Boom Herron, the most talked about non-playing member of the team last fall, is showing quicks and power.
A -- Eugene Clifford, who endured a suspension that kept him at home when the team went to the national championship game, has moved from cornerback to safety where he seems more comfortable, according to Heacock.
A -- It was a given there was going to be plenty of competition up front on the defense, especially with the departure of DE Vernon Gholston. Thaddeus Gibson and Mark Johnson, two former linebackers, are making inroads at that quasi DE/linebacker spot, and Curtis Terry, back from a year out of action due to injury, is stepping forward, too, Heacock said.
A -- The scrapes on the arms of defensive tackles Nader Abdallah, Todd Denlinger and Doug Worthington indicated the work going on down in the trenches is for real, even if it is spring.
A -- Heacock also indicated he is impressed with the way freshman linebackers Andrew Sweat and Etienne Sabino are flying around, just days into their college experience.
Maybe seeing is believing, but listening beats a total blackout. Barely.

Returning starters cause big backup at linebacker

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

January 15 was looming -- the date by which juniors had to declare for the NFL draft.
In the halls of the Ohio State practice facility, Marcus Freeman and James Laurinaitis noticed an unusual amount of interest in their decision among their linebacker teammates.
Their backup linebacker teammates, that is.
"Yeah, I remember," Freeman said yesterday, leaning back in his chair and laughing. "We had a lot of younger guys (ask), 'Hey, are you guys leaving or are you staying?' I'm like, 'I don't know ...

Yep - it is because, at one time, tOSU was on the list of schools who were interested in partnering with MSL Productions.
Of course, that fell through, so the article is incorrect in it's placement of Ohio State as one of the pre-game GridIron Bash venues.

Nope, more a mistake by USA Today. Concert was planned - fell through - and USA Today didn't fact check.

Though, it is worth noting that with legendary coaching figure-head and Depends spokesperson JoePa hanging on at Penn State the choice of Fergie to perform in Happy Valley was not all wet ...

I am planning on taking my football and hockey crazed 3 yr old son to the spring game this year. To get a good seat so he can see, how soon would I have to get there and how long would we be there? I am not trying to lose my brain just to take him but I do want him to see if we go.

It's a little different this year because of the lacrosse game occurring earlier in the stadium. In order to get a prime seating location (A or C deck between the 30s), I'll bet you'd have to get there a half-hour before the start of the lacrosse game (i.e., 10:30, before the 11 a.m. game). But you should be able to show up between the games (around 1 p.m.) and still get a seat with a decent view of the field, something like C deck, but not between the 20 yard lines.

Now if the weather is bad, all of that gets thrown out the window. :wink2:

So if I got there a half-hour before the start of the lacrosse game (i.e., 10:30, before the 11 a.m. game). and yet left the Lacrosse game a half hour before the end (ie 11:30 before the 12 pm end) then I should be able to get good seats in the Varsity club?
