2008 tOSU Spring Game (4/19) & Practice Discussion

Somebody needs to have Beanie's back this season

Finding a fullback might be Buckeyes' biggest need during spring practices

COLUMBUS - James Laurinaitis came back. So did Malcolm Jenkins. Beanie Wells was never in danger of leaving.
Who would have thought that with all the returning starters, Ohio State's biggest need entering spring camp would be at fullback?
It may seem trivial now, seeing how Ohio State rotated three relative no-names in and out of the spot last year. But as spring practice commences today, on a roster with fewer holes than Alex Rodriguez's swing, finding a suitable fullback moves to the forefront of priorities.
Wells rushed for more than 1,600 yards and 15 touchdowns last season running primarily out of I-formations. No fullback would leave Wells in single-back, or in split-back sets with speedster Brandon Saine.

Buckeyes look at ways to add spice to their spring

The Buckeyes will be looking for even more this spring and next fall from returning defenders Austin Spitler (38) and Eugene Clifford (32).

Jim Tressel met with reporters for a full hour on Wednesday, and pearls of wisdom fell like drops of rain.

OK, maybe that's a bit much, but the Ohio State coach had plenty to say about his team as it headed into the start of spring practice on Thursday. The Buckeyes are replacing only four starters from last season, so it's a much different feeling this spring compared with last year.
But there are still issues and agendas to discuss. And, of course, no story on Ohio State football can be complete these days without at least one Terrelle Pryor reference.
Dispatch beat reporters Ken Gordon and Tim May take a crack at sorting it all out:

The concerts tied to spring games around the country are being cancelled.

Does anybody know why Ohio State is listed in this article?

Gridiron Bash dashed due to NCAA rule interpretation

A series of events featuring big-name musical acts tied to spring football games at 16 colleges has been postponed because of concerns over an NCAA interpretation of athletes' involvement.

MSL Sports and Entertainment said in a release the promoter could not proceed with its "Gridiron Bash" because of an NCAA interpretation last week that would have limited participation of athletes in what it calls a "football celebration." According to Erik Christianson of the NCAA, MSL wanted to "use student-athletes' participation to promote" the events and allow athletes into the concerts for free ? both against NCAA rules.

The MSL release referred to the "NCAA's last-minute interpretation" and quoted President Shawn Garrity saying "with valuable time being lost awaiting NCAA clarification," the decision was made to hold events next fall and spring.

Yep - it is because, at one time, tOSU was on the list of schools who were interested in partnering with MSL Productions.
Of course, that fell through, so the article is incorrect in it's placement of Ohio State as one of the pre-game GridIron Bash venues.

Best I can surmise it was because of the Lacrosse promotion... I'm not aware of any musical act pairing...
Nope, more a mistake by USA Today. Concert was planned - fell through - and USA Today didn't fact check.

Though, it is worth noting that with legendary coaching figure-head and Depends spokesperson JoePa hanging on at Penn State the choice of Fergie to perform in Happy Valley was not all wet ...

DFP: Ohio State ready for spring practice -- without Terrelle Pryor

Ohio State ready for spring practice -- without Terrelle Pryor

By RUSTY MILLER

March 27, 2008

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Between another painful championship-game loss last January and an early season showdown with Southern California coming up on Sept. 13, Ohio State has a lot of work to do.

Since almost everybody's back from last year, not much time will be spent on introductions.

"You'd think we'd be a smarter football team with all the experience we have," coach Jim Tressel said on Wednesday, the day before the first official practice of the spring.

This is a veteran group of Buckeyes, with 47 players having been with the team for at least four years.

[...]

Despite the hoopla over the signing of blue chip quarterback Terrelle Pryor, who won't be on campus until the middle of the summer, Boeckman is a lock to be the starter.

[...]

Even though Pryor won't start, he may compete for playing time, and quickly.

"His ability to adjust to the system and the speed of the game will determine where he is in the mix," Tressel said. "But I tell all the guys at every position, 'Don't come in thinking you'll redshirt because if you can help this football team, let's go.'"
