2008 tOSU Spring Game (4/19) & Practice Discussion

This isn't just people being critical over the spring game...it is fans that are worried the last 3 games last year have transferred to '08. He is deservingly being criticized because he self destructed in the last 3 games, against easily the best 3 teams we faced. Regardless of the situation INT's won't be tolerated. Just based on the spring game alone I would say that it would be too critical to say much about TB's performance. He looked frantic still was my main worry, even with the black jersey on (though who could blame him after Moeller's shot ).

Todd will be the man going into the season though and rightfully so. I think he is beyond capable and has the tools...however, the mental game is crucial and I don't know how anyone can claim absolute confidence in his decision making considering the last 3 games and the scrimmage. His combined stats during the time is 8 INT's vs. 3 TD's...will that fly with Coach Tressel? Or any coach? Being a veteran senior doesn't insure he will make good decisions. I still have faith in Todd to get the job done come fall but it is just good to see Bauserman come up big and prove himself a viable option should Todd continue to regress. So in summary, judging TB's performance in the spring game to determine if he will be the starter is off-base. However, coupled with the last 3 games last year, there is cause for concern. In the mean time (and the theme music starts now) "trust the coaches".

If you consider Bauserman and Boeckman total had 270 yards passing, TB accounted for about half of the total passing yards. So when Pryor joins the team and adds his contribution, the total passing yardage could be over 400 in a single game. I'm just saying if they combined those numbers in a normal 60 minute game, it would be outstanding not to mention the untold rushing yardage from Beanie, Boom, Zoom, and Mo.

This is open for debate as well...Many will say they want a no interception, management type game, which is what you got in the Wisconsin game...
10 points in 2 1/2 quarters. We had to rely on Beanie to carry us on his shoulders.

Illinois, yes it was a bad game...But I still think if the defense gets us the ball back that he makes something happen...
Bad game is all that needs to be said for this discussion. Our defense should not have been put in that position in the first place.

Michigan...Mentioned in my last post, bad hand, weather, and once Beanie took over and Michigan couldn't move the ball there was no reason to force anything...
The weather didn't seem to bother either Henne or Big Tex as much as it did Boeckman. Tressel didn't take the ball out of Boeckman's hands because Michigan wasn't moving the ball, he took it out because he didn't want Boeckman to fuck it up.

LSU was not a regress game...He played well, yeah he had the 2 picks, but he played well enough for us to win this game...
17 points in 57 minutes is not "well enough to win". He was skittish from the middle of the second quarter onward. Beanie's rushing it what kept it from getting uglier. Yeah, if Robo holds on the the pass in the end zone and/or if Moeller is a foot faster and blocks the punt instead of roughing the kicker it's a different ball game. Doesn't matter.

Folks may think I dislike Boeckman...few things can be further from the truth. He's a class act and a near mirror image of Tressel when he speaks, and his taking a grey shirt and waiting four years to get his starting shot is worthy of admiration. But once Todd is rattled, stick a fork in him because he's done for the game. He first showed that in the second half against Michigan State. He did play a solid game at Penn State the next game, but from the Wisconsin game onward he just didn't seem near as confident as he did the first half on the season. You want your QB to gain, and not lose, confidence as the season progresses.

Troy didn't regress over his last three games (actually four, seeing as Todd led us to all of 10 points against Wisconsin in 2 1/2 quarters until Beanie told JT, "Gimme the ball"). This is a classic example of stats meaning jack squat.
Troy's stats in 2 of his last 4 games weren't all impressive either...

Illinois: 13-23-108, 0-TD, 1-INT
scUM: 29-41-316, 4-TD, 1-INT
BCSNCG: 4-14-35, 0-TD, 1-INT

I threw out the Northwestern game because... well it's Northwestern. Both guys had good numbers against the Wildcats.

Troy obviously had the much better game against scUM but it could be argued that Todd had a better game/was more productive in the BCSNCG.

That was Spitler.

And I'd argue Boeckman was a little shaken ever since the YSU game. If you'll recall, all of us raved about how impressive he was standing in the pocket taking those big hits. I didn't see as much of that the rest of the season.

Christ, you guys act like Boeckman is the second coming of Belisari. Chill out, he played well enough last year and he'll play just fine this year.

Did he really play that well...or was he handed many wins due to a great defense, surrounding cast on offense, and a weak schedule? I am not buckeye bashing I simply believe in play your best 11...:oh:

:roll1: Uh, no. It takes 24 players to win a football game(including punters and kickers). To say he was handed them is just plain obnoxious.

As we should for all of our victories, but that doesn't mean that he played bad...No interceptions is what you want...He had 2 toudchdowns, completed 60% of his passes, rating of 134, and also had a 14 yard rush...

Bad game is all that needs to be said for this discussion. Our defense should not have been put in that position in the first place.

Football is a team sport...The D gave up 28 pts, was ran over the last 11 minutes of the game...He still completed 56% of his passes and added 68 yards on the ground...Illinois got pressure and it got to TB and the last int was a horrible pass...Remember this was really the only time all year that we were down and went to Todd...yeah he didn't do well, but these situations will help him for this year...

You do know that Boeckman had an injured hand in this game...He threw the ball 13 times...There is no reason to really even put this game in here...Beanie and the defense won this game...

The pressure that Todd was under after we abandoned the run was unlike anything he had seen all year...His first pick he stood in there and took one of the biggest hits he took all year, he made a good read, but Small was outpositioned for ball, and along with the hit he took caused a bad pick...Once again completed 58% of his passes, if Small doesn't get outpositioned for that ball and Robo makes the catch in the endzone we see a totally different line for TOdd...Yeah what if i know, but I don't like to look at the glass half emtpy...His second pick was a bad play, but he was very rattled by that point especially after getting clotheslined on 4th down the last possession...

Yeah he has got happy feet at times, and this is why they are working on him with checkdowns...If he improves on this then some of the sacks he takes will diminish, and so will the interceptions...We have a QB that has been thru a season and a championship game and tough games on the road...He has a boat load of talent around him and I think he will be making plays this year that will make you like him even more...

Remember guys improve the most from their first year of playing to their second year...I am fully in the camp of Todd Boeckman, I think he is a QB that can lead us to where we want to go, I think that he is capable of cutting down his INTs and making big plays for us...And I know I am in the minority but I like how he has the gunslinger at times where he puts it up there for his receivers to make a play...This year Robo, Hartline, Small, Washington, Dane, or whoever are going to be stronger and will make more plays...

Then remember he has Saine and Wells out of the backfield, and hopefully we use Ballard and Nicol some...
