2008 tOSU Spring Game (4/19) & Practice Discussion

hahaah i thought we were talking about our reactions from the spring game and their implications...

And thank you for at least trying to get us back to that...

As for TW; we have a TON of very good receivers but I agree he looked very good Saturday.

Robo and Hartline will be fixtures. I don't see anyone taking their places.

The Great Dane has had a lot more buzz to this point, and Ray Small appears like he might be about to unleash his prodigious potential. If that happens, TW may get the dubious distinction of being our most talented pine-rider who doesn't wear a linebacker's number.

  1. Divide a quarterback's completed passes by pass attempts.
  2. Subtract 0.3.
  3. Divide by 0.2 and record the total. The sum cannot be greater than 2.375 or less than zero.
  4. Divide passing yards by pass attempts.
  5. Subtract 3.
  6. Divide by 4 and record the total. The sum cannot be greater than 2.375 or less than zero.
  7. Divide touchdown passes by pass attempts.
  8. Divide by 0.05 and record the total. The sum cannot be greater than 2.375 or less than zero.
  9. Divide interceptions by pass attempts.
  10. Subtract that number from 0.095.
  11. Divide that product by 0.04 and record the total. The sum cannot be greater than 2.375 or less than zero.
  12. Add the four totals you recorded.
  13. Multiply that total by 100.
  14. Divide by 6.
  15. The final number is your quarterback rating.
Someone mentioned quarterback rating. It might be fun to compare them. Who's got a calculator?

I haven't been here in a while.

Someone mind giving me a recap of the game?

Offensive/Defensive players of the game?

Few Surprise players?

Things that went well?

Something that was missing?

Anything like that would be great.

I am really excited for this football season to start and can't get enough of it.

wet, windy, vanilla play calling

offensive: Taurian Washington / Joe Bauserman

defensive: Lawrence Wilson (everyone is good and no one really stood out that much, Wilson just seemed to be in the backfield instantly on a couple of plays and I'm excited to see him back from and injury last season)

not really, when you have 19 returning starters, not including special teams, not too many things are unexpected, but Bauserman / Taurian Washington's play was probably the most surprising thing

no one got hurt

run game / dominant offensive line play, which is to be expected when Beanie is out along with two starters on the Oline as well as several backups who are expected to contribute

overall very little to be taken away from the game, everyone seems to be enjoying discussing the QB play, but you can read over the last couple pages for that because I'm not going to get into it

Troy's stats in 2 of his last 4 games weren't all impressive either...

Illinois: 13-23-108, 0-TD, 1-INT
scUM: 29-41-316, 4-TD, 1-INT
BCSNCG: 4-14-35, 0-TD, 1-INT
.
.
.
Troy obviously had the much better game against scUM but it could be argued that Todd had a better game/was more productive in the BCSNCG.
Troy didn't lose to Illinois, and if you remember correctly, Tressel shut the offense down in the second half once we had the 17-0 halftime lead. And no QB could've done anything in the NC game against Florida seeing as the Gator DEs seemed to be reaching Troy about the same time the snap was. If he had the protection against Florida that Todd had against LSU, we win that game.

Sorry, but Troy had one bad game, and that was due to the complete lack of anything resembling pass blocking.

The thing that bothers me about Todd is that he doesnt seem to be a good decision maker, he often holds onto the ball way longer then he should or will just toss a hanger up into double coverage. Also when he got pressure on him last year it seemed like he paniced and didint have the compsure of a Krenzel, losing his confidence easily and ending up making more poor decisions with the ball (Illinois Michigan And LSU Games).

His deep balls do seem to hang which he can get away with against not the best of secondaries because the Recievers ability to go get the ball, but when you play against elite level secondaries you cant get away with it.

Regarding the Quarterback position, I believe it is Todd Boeckman's to lose. He is the more experienced of the two and the better passer as of right now. Pryor has a cannon of an arm but isn't exactly a trustworthy passer at this point in his career (that has yet to begin, game wise). I see Pryor playing the so called "Tebow role" where he comes in for running plays. Wouldn't surprise me to see him start at some point this season (especially if Todd struggles), but at this point I think Todd is your guy for Quarterback.:)

By that same measure I think it is unfair to say Todd had three bad games in a row. I didn't see much of the Illinois game but I know that was by far the worst game of the year for Todd.

You mention Tressel shutting the offense down against Illinois in the second half after building a lead... didn't he do the same thing against scUM this year? Todd made one ill-advised throw at the end of the second half... other than that the calling was pretty conservative with the way the weather conditions were. I'd call Troy's Illinois and Todd's scUM games a wash.

My point was not to say Todd was just as good as Troy at the end of the year because he wasn't... Todd gets a bad wrap by some Buckeye fans because he didn't put up Heisman numbers in his last 3 games. Sure there is cause for concern, particularly with the interceptions he threw, but he wasn't near as bad as some are making him out to be.

Pryor stepping in @ the #2 spot is a 99.9999% (repeating) chance of not happening. Bauserman and Henton have far more PT and experience in the system. Of course we're going to throw controlled packages out for our new QB, but expect that to be with the utmost control. He won't start this season, and with the way our current backups are playing - he might not start next season either.

JT has said that Pryor will get a chance to run certain packages, but I wonder if we might also see Henton running those same sets first? I'd love to see what he can do in some spread option type stuff too.

Interesting discussion...
First of all Todd Boeckman is the starter, will be the starter all year, and if past history has any bearing, will be given a very long leash. It is clear that JT does not like quarterback controversies, so unless there is a total collapse by Todd there won't be one.

What disappointed me and I think alot of others was that after hearing all Spring that Todd was in total command of the offense, had emerged as a real leader and was ready to take the next step in his progression, I just didn't see it in the spring game. Yeah, it was a scrimmage, I get it, but the mistakes I saw were the same mistakes I saw last year: underthrowing the deep ball and getting picked (I don't buy the "he did it on purpose" argument at all on that throw, there was no reason to), locking down on one receiver and getting picked, and even more important to me the offense just didn't move that much better with Todd in the game than the other 2. I know, scrimmage, split personnel, but if you think back to the spring game before Troy's senior year it was right down the field, touchdown, sit for the afternoon. Also, I don't think it is entirely unfair to criticize a player after the spring game. After all, it is an "event" that I'm sure they all get up for and lets face it, athletically its probably a truer test than a game against YSU would be, and when Todd ran up against more athletic teams late in the year, he just didn't look that great. Throw stats around all you want, but his performance just didn't pass the look test as I had hoped it would.

Should Todd start-yes, and I hope that he will do great. There is no reason that this team should not at least win the Big 10 and get to a BCS game, but I think he is the key, because we all know that teams are gonna load the box to stop Beanie and try to get pressure, and he has either grown and can handle it and OSU will be great, or he hasn't and they will be fine.
We'll know after USC.....

Also, I say get TW in the game, if I remember right he got deep on Checkwa and Nate Oliver, a couple of players who are supposed to be in the 2 deep, which I hope says more about him than them, and the offense could use a "stretch the field" guy.
