2008 tOSU QB discussion (official thread)

I'm simply playing the devil's advocate here..

But the thing is, that was boeckmans first year starting, right?? he was learning for 2 years?? what makes you think Henton wouldnt be able to do the same his first year after learning for more than 1, pryor maybe not, but i really think he could do it.

I don't think people think that Henton would be a better QB immediately. I do think that people saw Boeckman regress as the season progressed, when he should have been progressing. Henton can do more with his feet, and hopefully progress as a passer, like Boeckman did not do after the halfway point. Will he be a better QB right away? Probably not. But I could see people making a valid argument that Henton wouldn't be as careless with the ball. And he's definitely more mobile.

I do think Boeckman will be a better player next year. He deserves to start, unless Henton or someone else truly shows that they are ready to take over. As others have said, Boeckman has the tools to be an EXCELLENT QB.

How many actual games has Henton participated in?
Game experience is HUGE. And cannot be duplicated by being good on the scout team.
We all should know that the end of our schedule was the tough part and would get much tougher than the cupcakes we played earlier.
Tougher competition=harder to make plays. Not necessarily a regression in QB play.

Didn't Craig Krenzel have "happy feet"?
Wasn't Craig Krenzel accused of holding on to the ball too long?

Even Troy Smith displayed "happy feet" at times. His difference was he believed he could run out of trouble all the time.(truth or not)

What separates Todd from every other QB that will be on our team next year is actual big game experience. He's been in the fire.
There is no duplicating that experience.

A lot of IFs in this discussion... I'll have to wait to really make a good observation but I think Boeckman will most likely be the starter....

Tressel loves seniority and Boeckman will be more used to the system.....

It will be hard to ignore Pryor (if we get him).

Regardless of experience, if he continues to be good for 3 TO's a game they have to give someone else a shot.

Bellasari had plenty of game experience and CK did ok as his replacement in '01.

Early in the season I would have agreed. Late in the season, not so much. He developed happy feet plain and simple, also I didn't see a very good pocket presence. He just seemed to have no sense of when to get rid of the ball.

Hopefully a lot of that will go away with the experience he gained this year and he is a solid SR starting QB for us. If those areas don't improve and he continues to turn the ball over its only fair to the team to see if someone else can get the job done. Better seperation by his WR's sure as hell can't hurt.

As far as the specualtion on Pryor(if he even comes to OSU), Henton and Bauserman goes I'll trust the coaches. None of us have a clue.

I do think better seperation by our WR's is the key, however if they are not able to do that in big games and against better DB's then you have to look at a more mobile QB (Henton or possibly Pryor). tOSU has been predictable in there passing game this passed year. Teams know that Boeckman cant out run them so they lock down the WR's and dont have to worry about spying him.
IMO the 3rd week of the season against USC is going to be huge, and having a more mobile QB back there at least 50% of the time is going to help out alot. Looking at the LSU game, IMO if we had played Henton on numorious 3rd and 8 occasions we would of had a better chance. Im not taking anything away from Boeckman, but with WR locked up and DL crashing in I would feel more comfortable with a duel threat QB in big games.

You can always count on plan #2 Give it to Beanie 50 times a game instead of 20 and let him win it for you.

Game experience is huge, however I remember a guy by the name Smith that came into the Texas game at the Shoe, without any experience and did just fine. Troy could run out of trouble and he proved that, thats what made him so successful and the team so much better, by all means he wasnt a pocket passer. Im not saying that we need a QB thats going to run it 15 times a game (ie, PAT WHITE) but keeping the defense on its toes and having that option is something that Boeckman doesnt offer. IMO hes alittle to predictable, and I believe that teams know that.

Ask Mike Hart how that works out, we need beanie on the field, not on a bike. Also, I would like to say I won a national championship on NCAA Football 2008 with Henton as my QB, so he gets my vote for starter next year :)

I won a NC in on 08 with Pryor as my starter, Saine in the backfield, and Posey/Thomas/Stoneburner at WR!

boeckman has the potential to be great, but the big issue i have is the underthrown balls. many of his picks this year have come from a bad underthrown ball. if the recievers and TB work on their timing in the off season, i think theyll be fine. i would like to see a henton or pryor start though. i think our weapons are best utilized with a mobile qb. i loved the offense that troy built, and a henton and pryor can fill the same role. that offense is almost unstoppable and add in a 2 RB tandem...could be VERY dangerous. we need a solid start come the night trip to the coluseum.....

No. Not that I can remember.

Again, no, not that I can remember. One of the best things about CK was his intuition in, and outside of, the pocket.

At this point bringing up Krenzel's (who won a NC his first year as starter) name in relation to Boeckman is waaaaay off.

People think Pryor's going to come in and light the world on fire. I'm not saying he can't; i'm saying he won't. Pryor will be great, but Boeckman is great NOW. It's hard to explain why Todd had his meltdown at the end of the year, but we know that he has the tools and that he's used them before. Something obviously affected him at the end of the year, and the coaches will fix it.

Joe Daniels is the best in the business, and he will turn Todd into the Heisman contender that we expected after the Penn State game.

You would remember wrong.

Troy had been a starter for half a season before that game.

Everyone is always rooting for the "next best thing" to come in and light the world on fire.

They wanted McMullen to start over Krenzel, Moherman over Bellisari, Mark Garcia to get the nod over Germaine AND Jackson.

It's always the same story.

Unless Todd gets hurt or becomes wholly ineffective he will start...every...single...game...next year.
