2008 tOSU Offensive Line discussion (official thread)

JT talked about who's in and who's out for spring practice today.

Blogs - Cleveland.com

Tressel said offensive linemen Steve Rehring and Ben Person will sit out spring practice while recovering from surgeries, while incoming freshman lineman Michael Brewster, who enrolled in January, is out as well after shoulder surgery.

That means a lot of opportunity for other linemen to show themselves in the battle to fill the right tackle spot vacated by Kirk Barton.

Bryant Browning was the top backup last season, but Tressel made sure to mention Kyle Mitchum and Jon Skinner, both returning from injuries that cost them all of last season. And incoming freshman Mike Adams, who just enrolled for spring classes, certainly has a shot as well.

"I'm sure if I'm Mike Adams I'm thinking, 'I'm taking that spot over,'" Tressel said.

Spring Offensive Line Two-Deep Impacted by Injuries and Surgeries
By John Porentas

Spring football continues this week with the Buckeyes headed toward the annual jersey scrimmage this weekend. That event will have a great deal of impact on the two-deep when fall camp opens next August.

The two-deep prior to the jersey scrimmage is pretty flexible and is also impacted by the injury situation this spring. A number of candidates for the two-deep are missing spring football due to injury or surgery. That is particularly true along the offensive line. Offensive line coach Jim Bollman ran it down last week.

Person, Cordle Reflect On 2007
By Jeff Svoboda

Going into last season, one of the major questions facing Ohio State was whether it could replace offensive line starters Doug Datish and T.J. Downing. For the most part, first-year starters Jimmy Cordle and Ben Person answered that in the affirmative. Now the two look back on their first years and talk about how they can get better in 2008.

Bollman Seeing OL Depth Vanish

By Dave Biddle, Assistant Editor

Ohio State was expected to have a very deep and talent offensive line this season. However, thus far during the spring, the Buckeyes are short on healthy bodies. Injuries to Mike Adams, J.B. Shugarts, Ben Person, Steve Rehring, Jon Skinner and Josh Kerr have muddled things considerably. We caught up with offensive line coach Jim Bollman for much more.

Ozone says we are missing many in the OL 2 deep.
Dinardo on the Big Ten network interview says tOSU has 20 offensive lineman in spring drills.
This doesn't seem to jibe.

I believe it was two years ago that we had 14 OL on schollie and Bollman said that was the most depth he had had coaching at any level.

I am guessing that 20 number includes most if not all of the injured players. If Adams has a bad shoulder I am sure he is still doing his share of running. Nobody gets to hang out in the lounge.

That makes sense, even though DiNarda on Big ten network embellished for contrast the lack of depth at Indiana--6 OLs in drills vs. tOSU --20 OLs in drills.
Looking at the roster, 19 OL's are listed: *injury, (w) walkon.
* Brewster, *Adams, Miller, Malone (w), *Person, Cordle, Ebner (w), Moses (w), *Mitchum, Blankenship, Slagle (w), Browning, *Rehring, *Kerr, Boone, Shuggarts, Sika (w), Smith, *Skinner.
Without the injured, of the 12 OL's on the roster only 7 scholarship athletes are involved in full pads practice.
What DiNarda once boasted as a strength, has weakened with the attrition of depth and experience.
It will be interesting to see who will be the OL starting on April 19.

OSU offensive line adds 4 starters, backups greet 3 prize recruits

By MATT MARKEY
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

COLUMBUS - On the surface, Ohio State appears to have a significant stash of offensive linemen, those hulks that create all of the opportunities for the Buckeyes' running backs and quarterbacks to thrive in the limelight.

But even with four returning starters at the five interior line positions, and backups with time in the program behind each one of them, the scenario still exists where highly-touted incoming freshmen Michael Brewster, J.B. Shugarts and Mike Adams could see action for Ohio State very early in their careers.

Senior offensive tackle Alex Boone said the trio, who were all taking part in spring workouts until a shoulder injury sidelined Adams last week, said the adjustment to the college game is significant.
