2008 tOSU Offensive Line discussion (official thread)

We'll see, with the offensive line personnel we have coming up, I think it will be a battle.

Who is going to challenge him? He's a proven starter in the Big-10 and a solid one at that while we lose both our starting guards and a couple back-ups. I haven't been impressed enough by Connor Smith to believe he can be a starter yet.

I think the o-line in '09 will look like this:

LT: Adams
LG: Boren
C: Cordle
RG: Blankenship
RT: Browning

Maybe if Shugarts develops into a great RT over his freshman season, he'll start at RT and Browning will move inside to RG but I think that's unlikely.

Interesting that you are unimpressed by Connor Smith so far, but put Blankenship over him at RG even though we haven't seen anything out of Blankenship yet. Any particular reason for the confidence in Blankenship?

Better pass blocker. And I haven't seen enough of Evan to be unimpressed by him either. Just an FYI, I'm not putting him over Connor. Connor is a LG and Evan is a RG. That's how I see it, anyhow.

Let's not turn this into an OL projection discussion. This is Justin's thread and let's keep it that way. Oh yeah, by the way, Justin will be in the two deep the second he becomes eligible to play.

I dare say Boren would be starting this year had he chosen OSU many moons ago. But as things stand now, with Boone, Rehring & Person all gone when Boren can play, I'd be shocked if he wasn't playing regularly a year from now, if not starting.

I think it's pretty safe to say that Browning has RT on lock down for '08 barring something unforeseen. So that gives us:

LT Boone
LG Rehring
C Cordle
RG Person
RT Browning

in '08

I think the biggest question going into '09 will be how well Shugarts progresses at RT, will he push Browning inside? or will Browning stay at RT?

I think everyone will concede that Adams will fill the LT spot and Cordle will stay at C for his senior year. And I will say that Browning will stay at RT.

If that's the case we will have:

LT Adams
LG
C Cordle
RG
RT Browning

with Boren, Smith, Blankenship and Brewster fighting for the two guard spots in '09.

If Shugarts excels at RT going into '09 that will push Browning inside to fight for one of the guard spots and adds another strong contender into the mix. That four or five way competition for those guard spots is going to be unbelievable and that can only lead to good things.

I was going to go into '10, but it's getting late, so long story short, our line depth is off the charts (especially at guard) for at least the next three years.

It's a great time to be a Buckeye.

The Star Beacon; Ashtabula, Ohio - Bollman bullish on Bucks

Harbor grad believes Pryor will fit in perfectly at Ohio St.

Bollman still holds to the theory that he'd like to have upwards of 10 linemen who can be rotated in, or using two complete different sets of linemen that can be inserted, as was the case for at least portions of the 2006 season. He believes he's getting close to that situation again. Injuries among some of the veterans has allowed other players to show they can step up.

"Bryant Browning (from Glenville) has looked real good this spring filling Kirk's spot," Bollman said. "Kyle Mitchum (from Erie's McDowell High School) has been playing some of his best ball with (left guard) Steve Rehring out. Connor Smith (from Cincinnati Coleman) has done well behind Ben Person (at right guard). Andrew Moses (from Columbus Watterson) has been doing well at backup center behind Jim Cordle.

"I think J.B. Shugarts has shown he can contribute. Andrew Miller (from Washington, Pa.) has shown he can move in at left tackle (behind Alex Boone). Josh Kerr (from Strongsville) is dealing with a high ankle sprain, but he looked good early. I think Evan Blankenship (from Monaca, Pa.) will help at right tackle. I think Mike Brewster will be ready to go this summer and we'll have to see how Mike Adams comes along."
Blankenship at tackle? Is that a typo?
