2008 tOSU Offensive Line discussion (official thread)

From the Ozone's early look at the 2008 offense. There's more to the article.

I took the liberty of moving Andy Miller from those under 'Walk-Ons', since he's not but Andrew Moses (listed as returning from the 2-deep) is.

I was prompted to doing some thinking yesterday when I heard that A. Stepanovich signed with Atlanta. My recollection from the spring game his to be senoir year was that OSU couldn't even field 2 lines with schollie players, and that only a couple of guys looked like they could play. How far the program has come in those several years. The OL should be a team strength for 08, with depth. It looks like 09 recruiting will at this point keep our line group deep and talented. Is this the deepest OL group we have ever had, post Woody?

I don't know as much about the players' abilities as some of you guys. Who do you guys think the "best pass blocker" is out of Browning, Smith, and Rehring, etc. - all our RT candidates? I'm not gonna include Adams and Shugarts b/c I figure it'll take too much getting up to speed on blocking assignments and college offense for the true freshmen to win the starting job before the season.

If I had to guess, I'd say Browning.

First of all, he's SMART (valedictorian, correct?) which is huge for a pass blocking lineman. Also, he got the most playing time at tackle of all the backups last year. That tells me a lot about how much the coaches trust his pass blocking ability.

Nothing against Smith, but I believe Smith is much more suited to be an interior lineman. He got blown up in pass coverage in my recent memory.

Rehring is a spectacular guard, and I don't see a reason to move him to tackle.

I would think that Skinner and Browning will get the first cracks but don't count out Shugarts. He has a college ready body, he got on campus early, and he is very technically sound in his run blocking. His film doesn't show much pass blocking but I thought he did fairly well in the AA game in his pass blocking. Mike Adams is college ready as well imo but we'll just have to see how quickly they pick the playbook up. Right now it's anybodies guess but I wouldn't count out Shugarts or Adams yet.
