2008 Preseason and Regular season Polls

I'm not basing it on potential. I think they're better. They beat the living hell out of us and Oregon. They scored 28 points in an off-game, offensively. They've proven to me that they're a great team.

I'm looking at it this way - if USC played BYU and Texas Tech, do I think they would win both games? Yes.

EDIT: I didn't say that I thought they should be that high, I'm saying that I understand why they made such a jump based on two of the teams they jumped.

Anyway, I have to disagree with you 3074326, it doesn't matter if you "think" USC is better than both TTU and BYU, they haven't played like it. If you base teams off of their "potential", then we would be number one or two for a very long time. You have to prove it week in and week out.

Well, they have and they haven't played like it. Yea, they didn't look great against an underperforming ASU team this week, and the OSU loss was pitiful, but do you think either TTU or BYU would have beaten us, even on their home fields, by 30+ points? TTU hasn't played a good team yet this season, and almost lost to a mediocre Nebraska team. BYU has looked really good this season, but let's at least wait until after the TCU game next week to christen them. I do think Florida and probably Oklahoma should still be ahead of USC in the USA Today poll though . . . . The real idiocies, as usual, are found further down in the top 25 polls. A 5-1 Kansas five and three spots ahead of a 5-1 USF club that beat them earlier this season? Huh? A one-loss Michigan St. club five spots ahead of a one-loss Cal club that beat MSU earlier in the season? Whuh?

I just don't understand these teams losing to unranked opponents and still ending up in the top ten. I'd like to know what people are smoking. We can lose to a team in the top 3 and get killed in the polls, then you see teams getting defeated by unranked hacks and somehow they're still ranked way ahead of us. You lost to Ole Miss and Oregon State. Do not pass go, do not get ranked anywhere near the top ten, thanks.

My only hope is that Penn State is sitting pretty and we deliver them a death blow, but even then I can see a boatload of excuses and everyone chalking it up to nothing.

USC beat the living hell out of us, and Florida beat the living hell out of LSU last night. That's what it boils down to. Wisconsin is our best win, and it's not comparable.

41-14 and 38-24 don't help.

USC beat who? Boeckman and Dan Herron? So if we lose to Youngstown State and then stomp USC we're in the top five? No, that's not how it works.

Look at who received 17 votes in the Harris poll

Harris Interactive | 404 - File Not Found

Hopefully pollsters were trying to vote for St. instead.

Oregon State > Youngstown State. If you lose to Ohio and beat SC, you are probably till in top 5, yes.

Even if we were, I fail to see any situation where we lose to a nobody, beat USC, and still get ranked in the top five. Pretty sure if we lose to Troy or Ohio U, we're getting knocked out of the polls even if we go on to beat USC. Who did USC play to end up back where they are? Arizona State? That's just ridiculous.

They also beat the fuck out of Oregon.

They're a great team who was upset. I fail to see why it's such a big deal that a team who dominated two very respectable opponents is ranked highly. Do you think they'd lose to Texas Tech and/or BYU? I think they'd beat both.

Knocked out of the polls? GMAFB. And SC beat Arizona State and Oregon, not to mention watching several weekends of bloodbaths at the top. That's how you move up.

After what I saw on Saturday, this is the first week I'm perfectly happy with where we are in the polls. My disappointment was with the polls at first, but what bothers me now is how far below potential our team is playing, as osugrad21 put it.

I hope our guys can put it all together, but they don't have much time. We have all the parts, they just aren't assembled properly yet.

I forgot how dominant Oregon State is. Losing to Stanford and Utah has to make you a beast of a football team. Not to mention getting ripped to shreds by Penn State. What was the score in that game again?

Youngstown State lost 40-7 to South Dakota State. Of course, they were more competitive in losses to Liberty, Southern Utah, and Missouri State.

So, again, Oregon State > Youngstown State.

Upsets don't negate great wins. Great wins negate upsets. It's just how it is, whether you think it's fair or not is your own opinion.

All I'm saying is that if we lay everything out on the table as it is right now, we should be in the top 3 if we beat Penn State, yes? PSU put the wood to Oregon State, a team that went on to beat USC. All things considered, we should be top 3? We'll see if that happens.
