OSU's win over Troy fails to impress poll voters

Monday, September 22, 2008 12:09 AM

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Both coaches and the media were generally unimpressed with Ohio State's 28-10 victory over Troy.
Ohio State moved up one place in the USA Today coaches' poll, to 13th, and slipped one place in the Associated Press media poll, to 14th. The flip-flop means that, in the aggregate, the Buckeyes' win on Saturday did nothing to improve their national standing.

Wow, interesting stuff. I'm shocked to see LSU at #2. Nice jump for PSU. That'll make us look good when we beat them.

PSU jumping 6 spots is absolutely absurd. You beat a team ranked 10 spots lower than you, at home, and you jump up 6 spots in the poll.

By that logic, we should be #1 if we beat Wisconsin next week.

I also refuse to believe USF and TTU are better than us, Florida, or Auburn.

By the time we play PSU, if we both continue to win...Knock on Wood...

Oklahoma has Baylor, Texas, and Kansas...Could very easily lose one of them...

Texas plays Colorado, Oklahoma, and Mizzou...Don't see them being ahead of us then...

Mizzou plays Nebraska, Okie St, and Texas...See them still being up there...

So for the Big XII I see Okie sweeping those games, staying on top...See Texas losing to Okie and beating Mizzou...So that takes 2 teams ahead of us out...

SFl has Pitt and Cuse...Don't see them losing, but they could lose to PItt...

LSU is @FL and @SC...I see them losing in the swamp, and maybe back to back games, if SC can find anything on offense...

Bama has Kentucky and Ole Miss...Don't see them winning...

UGA has Tenn. and Vandy...Don't see them losing...

PSU has @ Purdue, @ Wisky, and Michigan...If they win those they will be coming to the shoe probably ranked 3rd in the country, behind 1 team from the Big XII, and Bama...

We have @ Wisky, Purude, and @ MSU...If we win those I would put us around 10th as I don't see teams like SFL, TTech, BYU losing...We should have 2 ranked teams in that stretch tho as Wisky and MSU should be ranked when we play them...We could jump teams like the ones I mentioned...

So us vs. PSU could set up to be a very big game, and could put us back in the national picture, but we are going to need to continue to get better and not to lose to teams that we shouldn't lose to...

It's neither surprising nor the end of the world. Ohio State would have moved up a few if they had held Minny to six points. But, get blown out by a team that loses to a 21-point dog and let a team of Minnesota's calibre score like they did in the fourth quarter and then rub it in with the 2-point conversion, the Buckeyes are lucky that they did not go down.

Here's the bad news. Beating Wisconsin next week will only confirm that they were over-rated and drop them out of the top 25. It might move us up one or two tops. We need a whole bunch of losing above us to move.

I think it is a good thing because I think the team will now realize just how far they have to go to redeem their image nationally.

I don't disagree with the AP's ranking of Ohio State at #14. I think that it's probably a fair assessment, perhaps even generous, when you look at our season to this point.

It is hard to take their poll seriously, however, when you consider the fact that Auburn jumped 2 spots, in front of Ohio State, with the performance they turned in on Saturday. It is one thing to say that the SEC is a better conference than the Big Ten right now, but it is another to reward Auburn for eeking out a snoozer against a Tennessee team that would be mediocre in the Big Ten.

I'm not one to give much credence to these things, especially when it's just now turning to October, but I have got to say the AP poll is nothing short of a pathetic, poorly thought out joke.

Why bother keeping Ohio State ranked at all, AP pollsters? I mean really, why bother? Ohio State has failed to improve it's position ONCE this year in going 4-1. I understand falling after USC.... I won't even complain about falling to 14, even if Georgia got manhandled by a supposedly worse team, but fell only to 11th... but, the Auburn jump proves it... there is no legitimacy to the AP poll at all. None.
